Pilot scale vertical-type membrane bioreactor was operated to examine the effect of $FeCl_3$ injection on the removal of organics, nitrogen and phosphorous, and additionally trans-membrane pressure (TMP) was observed. The membrane type was hollow fiber membrane with pore size of $0.25\;{\mu}m$, and the material was polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The membrane permeate was continuously removed by a pump under a constant flux ($25\;L/m^2/h$). Air back-flushing technique were adopted to reduce fouling. As a result, TMP was increased more slowly than that of the operation without air back-flushing, During long-term operation, approximately 310 days, the injection of $FeCl_3$ was effective not only in removing phosphorous chemically but also in reducing TMP increase. Furthermore, while the average COD and T-N concentration of the effluent without $FeCl_3$ injection was 14.3 mg/L and 6.0 mg/L respectively, that of effluent with $FeCl_3$ was 11.3 mg/L and 6.0 mg/L respectively, which confirmed the effects of $FeCl_3$.
A sewage was treated using a vertical flow zeolite-filled reed bed. The sewage from the student dormitory of Changwon National University was fed into the reed bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^3{\cdot}$day. The filtering height of the reed bed was 100 em and the zeolite mixture was filled in the reed bed. The mixture consisted of the same volume of two types of zeolite: 0.5$\sim$1 mm and 1$\sim$3 mm in diameter. Annual average removal efficiency was 88 89.9%, $COD_{Cr}$ 86.1 %, $COD_{Mn}$ 81.2%, T-N 34.0%, $NH_4^+$-N 97.3% and T-P 34.6%. T-N of effluent was mostly $NO_3^-$-N and the concentration of $NO_2^-$-N in effluent was lower than 0.1 mg/L. All removal efficiencies did not show a remarkable seasonal change. The ranking of phosphorous fractions fixed to the zeolite in column test was Ca-P > Fe-P > reductant soluble Fe-P > occluded P > saloid P > AI-P at all depths of the filter. All phosphorous fractions except for AI-P reduced at deeper filter layer, while their content ratios increased at deeper filter layer. Organic matter content was the highest at the highest layer (0$\sim$5 cm from the top of the filter) and only small differences were observed at the deeper filter layer than 5 em from the top. Organic matter content increased at all depths of the filter with the operating time.
Removal rates of residual organic phosphorous pesticides (chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion) in Perilla leaves by various washing methods were determined. The removal rates using stagnant tap water were 20.05 and 17.70% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, whereas 44.28 and 39.10% using flowing tap water, and 19.14 and 15.43% using activated carbon-added stagnant tap water, respectively. Activated carbon-added flowing stagnant tap water removed 25.29 and 15.43% of chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, and removal rates were 53.51 and 50.62% with alkaline solution and 30.25 and 28.09% with acidic solution, respectively. With neutral detergent solution, removal rates were 81.52 and 76.56% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, respectively. Results revealed washing method using neutral detergent solution was most effective for removing residual pesticides.
This study was examined for the effect of tuber size, bud and tuber removal, and tuber cutting on growth of Eleockaris kuroguwai Ohwi. Elongation of plumule and radicle, and the weights of tuber, rhizome and shoot were increased as tuber size is large. The weights of shoot and tuber reduced by bud planting without tuber at 15 days after budding, however number of tubers were increased compared with normal tuber. When cross-cutting tubers were seeded, the weights of shoot, rhizome and tuber were produced as 84%, 85%, 71%, respectively compared with normal tuber, and the number of tubers was not influenced. The weights of tuber, rhizome and shoot were lowed as the bud removal, and there were a great number of tubers at bud removal of 15 days after budding. Tuber of E. k, contained as nonfibrous 78.9gr, phosphorous 77mg, iron 16.8mg, niacin 1.3mg per 100gr edble portion. The positive correlations were observed between shoot weight and tuber weight, and number of tubers.

There are increasingly important financial incentives and environmental consideration to improve the effluent quality of wastewater from domestic and industrial users. The activated sludge process is a widely used biological wastewater treatment process. The activated sludge process is complicated due to the many factors such as the variation of influent flowrate and concentration, the complexity of biological reactions and the various operation conditions. Nowadays, not only suspended solids and residual carbon, but also nitrogen and phosphorous concentration of the effluent water must be taken into account for the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants. Also, the effluent quality to be met are more stringent. Therefore, an intelligent control approach is required in order to successful biological nitrogen removal. In this paper, the strategies for dosage of extra carbon in the anoxic zone and DO concentration in the aerobic zone are presented and evaluated through the simulation using the denitrification layout of the IWA simulation benchmark implemented by Matlab$\^$/5.3/Simulink$\^$/3.0. The control strategy to achieve sufficient denitrification rates in an anoxic zone. Methanol is used as an external extra carbon source. The external extra carbon source is required for the nitrogen removal process because nitrogen and organic concentration are fluctuated in the influent flowrate. The dissolved oxygen is calculated by So concentration in the activated sludge model NO.1. The air flowrate of each aerobic reactor is intelligently controlled to achieve the predefined setpoints. Air flowrate is adjusted by the fuzzy logic controller that includes two inputs and one output. The objective function for the optimization procedure is designed to improve effluent quality and reduce the operating cost.
In this study, exfoliated vermiculite (EV) coated with glycerol was tested for its abiility to remove phosphorus in aqueous solution. The glycerol modified vermiculite (GS) was prepared with EV/glycerol ratio of 1/4 where glycerol contained 4 mol% $H_2SO_4$ and heated until designated temperature. GS heated at $380^{\circ}C$ showed that the specific surface area was $53.1m^2/g$ and mass loss due to oxidation of carbon was maximum from TGA analysis. Removal of phosphorus using GS heated at $380^{\circ}C$ was well explained by Langmuir isotherm model and maximum sorption capacity of 714.3 mg/kg is comparable or greater than those of other clay orignated sorbents for phosphorus.
One of the disadvantages of flooding treatment for desalting from soils is that salts move to deep soils after flooding and at the end reaccumulate at the soil surface through capillary movements. This study was carried out to remove salts from soils in plastic film houses by a modified flooding method, drainage after flooding. The method successfully removed salts at the soil surface and salts did not move to the deep soil. Drained water containing N, P and K could be reused as fertilizer. By applying small amount of MgO, turbidity of water flooded decreased in 30 min by 95%. Struvite should be formed since the flooded water contain ammonia and phosphorous and their concentrations were decreased. This could be utilized as fertilizer which provides a slow-release source of phosphorus, magnesium and nitrogen that features low inherent water solubility.
Coal seam gas (CSG) water, to be discharged, has been usually treated in reverse osmosis (RO) plants which require extensive and expensive pre-treatment. However, current low gas prices have been a great driver for relevant industries to seek for alternative cost-effective technologies in the aspect of its beneficial use and fit-for-purpose usable water production. In this paper, a combined system with a two-stage pore control fiber (PCF) filtration and a RO system was designed and tested for CSG water treatment. Also, a coagulation reactor was placed in front of the PCF to further enhance suspended solid removal. More than 99% of SS were removed through the PCF filtration while organic, total nitrogen and total phosphorous were mostly removed by the RO system. Especially along with a decrease in conductivity, the total dissolved solid derived from salts was mainly removed in the RO system. Having $OH^-$ undetected, $HCO_3{^-}$ was found to be a dominant compound and its removal efficiency was 97-98% after the RO treatment. And a Fe(III) type of Polytetsu, which was the first to be tested in this paper, was found to be a better option than a Al(III) type of Poly Aluminium Chloride due to its greater coagulation efficiency and applicability at a broader range of pH than the Al(III) type. In addition, there was no noticeable change in oxidation reduction potential, suggesting that an additional process is required to oxidize non-ionic organic carbons (detected as total organic carbon).
This study aims at characterizing the bacteriophages isolated from activated sludge performing enhanced biological phosphorous removal (EBPR) to understand the interactions between the phage-host system and bacterial community. Sixteen bacterial isolates (E1-E16) were isolated as host bacterial strains from EBPR activated sludge for phage isolation. Forty bacteriophages based on their plaque sizes (2 plaques on E4, 4 on E8, 11 on E10, 5 on E14, 18 on E16) were obtained from filtered supernatant of the EBPR activated sludge. Each bacteriophage did not make any plaque on bacterial strains tested in this study except on its own host bacterial strain, respectively, indicating that the bacteriophages are with narrow host specificity. However, fourteen of the forty bacteriophages obtained in this study lost their virulent ability even on their own host bacteria. All of the lytic phages showed similar one-step growth patterns and had long latent period (about 9 hours) to reproduce their phage particles in their host bacterial cells. On the other hand, their probable burst sizes (6 to 48 per host cell) were large enough to actively lyse their host bacterial cells. Therefore, it could be implied that bacteriophages are also important members of the microbial community in EBPR activated sludge, and lytic phages directly decrease the population size of their host bacterial groups in EBPR activated sludge by lysis.

Conventional physicochemical technologies for algae growth inhibition have economical and environmental pollution problems. This study attempted to overcome the problems by nature-friendly biological inhibition technology using fibrous carrier. The experimental results showed that the most effective carrier material, polyester, exhibited the highest biofilm thickness. The removal efficiency for nutrient salts, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, and algae growth inhibition of polyester carrier was 14.59%, 6.36%, and 77%, respectively, which is higher than for control group. These result indicate that the polyester carrier is available in eutrophic lake.
