  • Organic farming has rapidly increased in Gangwon province, but there is a concern about nutrient accumulation and nutrient imbalance in the soil of organic farming. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of continuous application of organic amendments on growth and yield of red pepper and soil characteristics compared with chemical fertilizers application for four years. Treatments of organic amendments including oil cake, rice straw compost, amino acid compost, rice bran compost, and mushroom media (spent substrate) compost resulted in comparable growth and yield of pepper to chemical fertilizers. Organic amendments improved soil physical and chemical characteristics. Especially, rice bran compost and oil cake significantly increased soil organic matter compared with chemical fertilizer application and mushroom media compost and rice straw compost significantly improved soil aggregate stability. On the other hand, available phosphate level in the soil amended with rice bran compost or mushroom media compost was relatively high compared with the other treatments due to relatively high phosphate levels in the composts. It is not easy to adjust nutrient composition in the organic materials. Therefore, the results obtained from the study imply that nutrient imbalance needs to be carefully considered in organic farming without use of chemical fertilizers.

  • Magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) was recovered from swine wastewater and the feasibility of reutilizing it as a slowly-releasing fertilizer was evaluated. Maize growth was investigated with normal and high application rates of MAP and a fused super phosphate (FSP) fertilizer. A total of 5 treatments ($T_0$ = control, $T_1$ = MAP based on 30 kg P $ha^{-1}$, $T_2$ = FSP based on 30 kg P $ha^{-1}$+urea equivalent to nitrogen of MAP applied in $T_1$, $T_3$ = MAP based on 40 kg P $ha^{-1}$, $T_4$ = FSP based on 40 kg P $ha^{-1}$+urea equivalent to nitrogen of MAP applied in $T_3$) were arranged with 3 replications. In the case of height and circumference, significant differences were found between controls and treated maize plants (p<0.01). However, no statistical differences were found between MAP- and FSP-urea treated maize. Leaf area and green biomass yield were significantly (p<0.01) higher in the treated group than control. Leaf area was also found significantly higher (p<0.01) in the higher MAP- treated group (2,374 $cm^2$ $plant^{-1}$) than other treatments. $N_2O$ emission was found to be lower in MAP treated soil than that from FSP-urea treated soil, which might be due to the slow releasing pattern of MAP. It could be assumed from the results that MAP would be an eco-friendly sustainable fertilizer source for crop production.

  • Effects of inoculation with phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms, Pseudomonas putida and Aspergillus niger, were studied in both acidic red-yellow and alkaline calcareous soils cropped with pimiento. In red-yellow soil after cultivation, the amounts of soil available phosphorus on non-fertilizer and fertilizer plots inoculated with Aspergillus niger, and on rice straw plot inoculated with Pseudomonas putida and Aspergillus niger were significantly higher than uninoculation treatments, but there were no differences in calcareous soil. With inoculation of either Pseudomonas putida or Aspergillus niger, increase in phosphorous uptake by pimiento cultivated in calcareous soil was detected on non-fertilizer, and fertilizer plots except rice straw plot. Although there were no significant differences in soil cellulase activities among treatments, the activity was the highest on rice straw plot in red-yellow soil. The phosphatase activities in red-yellow soil were increased by the inoculation with Aspergillus niger only, and the activity in calcareous soil was improved by the inoculation with either Pseudomonas putida or Aspergillus niger.

  • A phosphate solubilizig bacterium, Pantoea agglomerans, was isolated from rhizosphere soils collected from Chungbuk area. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of combined application of rock phosphate and P. agglomerans inoculation on plant growth and phosphate accumulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Apart from control that received no inputs, six treatments were planned as follows; 1) seed bacterization, 2) free cell inoculation and 3) bacteria immobilized beads inoculation, individually and in combination with 1 and 2.5 g of rock phosphate per pot. The results showed that plant growth and phosphate uptake were significantly enhanced as a result of bacterial inoculation. Bacterial inoculation in the form of immobilized beads and 1 g of rock phosphate was found to affect positively the rice plant growth and phosphorus accumulation than other treatments. The available phosphate concentration of the pot mixture also found improved as a result of P. agglomerans inoculation. A positive correlation was observed between the phosphate concentration in the pot mixture and phosphate accumulation in plant.

  • To investigate interactions of silicate and phosphate applied in paddy soil, different levels of the two fertilizers were treated on pots of Jinheung variety of Japonica rice, then availability and absorption of the silicate and phosphate and growth of the rice plant were analyzed. The availability of silicate applied in soil was reduced by increased application of phosphate and this antagonism implied the interaction of silicate and phosphate in soil. The silicate absorption by rice plants was remarkably reduced by the phosphate application, while the phosphate absorption was reduce only at high levels of silicate. At low levels of silicate, the phosphate absorption was affected differently depending on growth stage or parts of the rice plant. The application of silicate fertilizers increased the pH of the soils. The application of silicate and phosphate fertilizers improved the plant height, the tiller number, and the grain weight, but not the dry weight of the grain. The effect of interaction of silicate and phosphate on the plant growth did not appeared.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of P fertilization and cutting fkquency without N fertilizer on nutritive value and nitrogen fixation activity of alfalfa. A field experiment was conducted on the experimental farm of Kongju National University at Yesan from 1994 to 1996. The experimental design was a split plot design with two P levels as main plot and two cutting frequencies as the sub-plot. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Available phosphate, exchangeable Ca and Na in the soil were slightly increased with P fertilizer and basal treatment of lime. Average DM yield was 1.5 ton and 1.4 ton in second and third year. There was no significant difference within P level and cutting kquency. The first cut showed higest CP value as cutting times increased the value tend to be lowered. Crude protein content in 3 and 4 cutting regimes were from 16.3 to 16.6% 17.4 to 17.9% respectively, but no significant effect were found among the main and sub-plot. ADF and NDF in 1995 were ranged from 38.2 to 39.9, 45.1 to 58.1% respectively. ADF was 2% more higher in 1996 compared to previous year and NDF was slightly higher in 1996. There was significant difference of ADF between main plot in 1995. .P, Ca, K and Mg of 200kg P level with 3 times cutting treatment in 1995 and 1996 were 0.32 and 0.23, 0.95 and 0.84, 3.24 and 2.87, and 0.36 and 0.26. Significant difference of K and Mg between cutting frequency was observed in 1995. Nitrogen fixing activity of 400kg P fertilizer plots were higher than 200kg P level and 3 times cutting plot also showed higher acetylene reduction activity than that of 4 cutting per year. Phosphate level and cutting frequency treatment of did not significantly affect nitrogen fixation activity.

  • A field experiment was conducted on a recently reclaimed hillside land to investigate the effectiveness of newly formulated compound fertilizer (10-14-11) containing fused phosphate as phosphorus source. Winter barley was adopted as a crop and commercial compound fertilizer (22-22-11), triple superphosphate, and ordinary fused phosphate were compared with the new compound fertilizer. The result of present study is summarized as follows. 1. When viewed from the plant hight and dry matter yield observed at different growth stages, it was indicated that newly formulated compound fertilizer seemed to be more effective in late stage than early stage. 2. Grain yields were higher in the compound fertilizer plots compared to the triple superphosphate and fused phosphate plots. The yield was specially high in the newly formulated compound fertilizer plot. In this plot, the number of grain per panicle and the rate of maturity were higher than the other plots. 3. The amount of phosphorus uptake by plant in the newly formulated compound fertilizer was lower in early stage and higher in late stage. In this experiment, the magnesium and silica contained in fused phosphate did not influence the growth and yield of barley because the soil was relatively high in these components. 4. Because of the unprecedented severity of winter weather during the experiment, the result obtained in present study may not be generalized until some studies confirm present findings.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the broadcast and band applications of phosphate fertilizer and the application amounts of fertilizer during the soybean-barley cropping periods from 1976 to 1979 on the Sam-gag sand loam of a newly reclaimed hilly land. 1. The broadcast application was superior to band in view of yields for both soybean and barley. The yield was the highest in the broadcast application with the amount 38 kg $P_2O_5$ per 10a of fused phosphate which was calculated from soil testing at the first crop period and thereafter additional 6 kg at every crop period. 2. According to the quadratic relationship between yield and the available phosphate in soil, the maximum soybean Yield, 322 kg per 10a obtained at 220 ppm of available phosphate under broadcast and 259 kg per 10a at 200ppm under band. 3. By broadcast application of phosphorus, root weight was higher and horizontal root expansion was much better than by band application.

  • The objectives of fertilizer recommendation are to prevent the application of excessive fertilization and to produce target yields. Also, optimal fertilization is important because crop quality can be influenced by fertilization. In this study, yields and fertilizer use efficiency of Taro (Colocasia esculenta Schott) were evaluated in different level of NPK fertilization. N, P and K fertilizer application rates were 5 levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200%) by practical fertilization ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=180-100-150kg\;ha^{-1}$), respectively. In the N treatment, the yields of Taro tuber were about $33Mg\;ha^{-1}$ from 90 to $360kg\;ha^{-1}$ N fertilization. However, the ratio of tuber to total biomass decreased with increasing N fertilization rate. In the P and K treatments, yields of Taro tuber were the highest at $150kg\;ha^{-1}$ fertilization. Fertilizer use efficiency was decreased by increase of N and K fertilization. Crude protein of Taro tuber was the highest at practical fertilization. Sucrose content of tuber was influenced by phosphate application.
