  • The purpose of this research is to develop the model of turbulence modulation due to the presence of particles in various types of particle-laden flows Available experimental data are surveyed and the dependence of turbulence modulation of carrier-phase on particle size, concentration and. particle Reynolds number are examined. This study takes into account the effect of wake produced by particle, the drag between phases and the velocity gradient in the wake to estimate the production of turbulence. The model of turbulence modulation using the mixing length theory under the assumption of equilibrium flow is proposed. Numerical results show that the model is successful in predicting the characteristics of the particle-laden in various flow conditions both qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • With the development of multilevel converters, cascaded single-phase H-bridge rectifiers (CHBRs) has become widely adopted in high-voltage high-power applications. In this study, sequence pulse modulation (SPM) is proposed for CHBRs. SPM is designed to balance the dc-link voltage and maintain the smooth changes of switch states. In contrast to phase disposition modulation, SPM balances the dc-link voltage even after removing the load of one submodule. The operation principle of SPM is deduced, and the unbalance degree of SPM is analyzed. All the proposed approaches are experimentally verified through a prototype of a four-module (nine-level) CHBR. Conclusions are drawn in accordance with the results of SPM and its imbalance degree analysis.

  • For long-range communication in deep water, low carrier frequency is efficient due to a decrease in transmission loss. However, there is a limitation in that the data rate decreases due to a narrow bandwith. In order to increase the data rate in an environment with a limited bandwidth, it is necessary to design a higher-order modulation scheme. This paper analyzes the long-range communication data modulated by higher-order modulation schemes. The long-range communication experiment (23 km ~) was conducted in East Sea in October 2020. During the experiment, a vertical line array was utilized and communication sequences were modulated by Phase Shift Keying (PSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) schemes and transmitted by a towed source. In more detail, PSK modulation consists of quadrature PSK and 8PSK, QAM modulation consists of 8QAM and 16QAM. Time reversal processing is applied to mitigate inter-symbol interference by utilizing the correlation between received signals and channel impulse responses. All modulation schemes show successful results at 23 km range, demonstrating the feasibility of higher-order modulation in long-range communication.

  • Frequency modulation spectroscopy of the super-cavity, of which finesse is app. 40,000 has been demonstrated by using a sigle mode He-Ne laser. In-phase and quardrature components of frequency modulation signals (FM signal) were obtained by using the 1.5 MHz-driven-electrooptic phase modulator. The vector locus of the FM signa in the phase space, which is consisted of in-phase and quardrature components of the FM signal, was observed and analyzed for the dependence of FM signal upon the phase of the reference signal of a phase-sensitive-detector. According to rotating the phase of the reference signal, the vector locus was observed to rotate with the same phase angle as the reference signal. The in-phase component of the FM signals will be used to stabilize the frequency of the He-Ne laser to the resonant frequency of the super-cavity.

  • In single mode fiber optic transmission systems(FOT's) operated at high modulation rates over long fiber spans, chromatic dispersion can produce distortion in the demodulated waveforms, resulting in intersymbol interference(ISI) in the received signal and a reduction of transmission system performance. In this paper, chromatic dispersion limitations for intensity modulation and direct detection(IM-DD) systems are studied by considering the effect of phase modulation to amplitude modulation (PM-AM) conversion noise. Laser phase noise conversion to amplitude noise due to fiber chromatic dispersion is analyzed by deriving the noise power spectral density. We first derive the noise power spectral density of the laser phase noise to intensity noise conver- sion. Next, also evaluate the system power penalty and the transmitter laser linewidth required to avoid PM-AM conversion noise penalties in long-haul nonregenerative transmission system using an external modulator and optical amplifiers. For such system with optical amplifiers, transmission sys- tem length is limited due to fiber chromatic dispersion, even if an ideal external modulator is used.

  • This article presents a novel cooperative spectrum sharing (CSS) scheme. The primary transmitter transmits a complex Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal in the first phase, and CSS occurs in the second phase. The secondary transmitter with the largest forwarding channel gain among the nodes that successfully decode the primary signal in the first phase is selected for CSS. This selected node employs a pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) signal for primary information message (IM) instead of the QAM signal, and it employs a modified PAM signal for the secondary IM. The proposed modified PAM signal depends on the amplitude of the primary PAM signal. This method results in no mutual interference and negligible primary interference constraint and allows a higher degree of exploitation of spatial diversity, thus enabling increase in secondary power to improve primary transmission. The outage performance is enhanced in both the primary and secondary systems. The critical region, in which the primary outage performance is enhanced with the proposed CSS scheme, can be adjusted and widened by varying either the modulation cooperation sharing factor or the number of secondary transmitters.

  • A technique to suppress the low frequency ripple voltage of the DC output in three phase buck diode converter is presented in this paper. The proposed pulse frequency modulation methods and duty ratio modulation methods are employed to regulate the output voltage of the buck diode converter and guarantee zero-current-switching(ZCS) of the switch over the wide load range. The proposed control methods used in this paper provide generally good performance such as low THD of the input line current and unity power factor. In addition, control methods can be effectively used to suppress the low frequency ripple voltage appeared in the dc output voltage. The harmonic injection technique illustrates its validity and effectiveness through the simulations and experiments.

  • The diffraction efficiencies of gratings are affected by the inner structure which is determined by modulation type. CGH (Computer generated Hologram) basically uses the principles of a diffraction grating. As like as the diffraction gratings the patterns recorded in the CGH are different according to modulation methods which result in the performances of the reconstructed images. In this paper, on this fact CGHs are recorded according to sinusoidal and rectangular modulation methods and the characteristics of reconstructed images are analyzed. Also the reconstruction performances of the amplitude and phase, phase-only and binary phase CGH are analyzed.

  • A channel is very sever in an underwater acoustic communication. Therefore, a modulation method with high spectrum efficiency is needed in an underwater acoustic communication. PSK(phase shift keying) for transmitting 1 bit or 2 bits is robust to noise, but sensitive to noise about more than 3 bits. CPFSK error performance for transmitting 1 bit or 2 bits is similar to that of PSK and CPFSK decreases high frequency components in modulation signal. In the paper, I analyze the performance of trellis coded 4-CPFSK modulation.
