  • High data-rate underwater communications is demanded. This demand imposes stringent requirements on underwater communication equipment of phase-locked-loop (PLL). Phase noise in PLL is unwanted and unavoidable. In this paper, we investigate the PLL phase noise effect on high order QAM for underwater communication systems. The phase noise model using power spectral density is adopted for performance evaluation. The phase noise components considered in PLL are reference oscillator, voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), filter and divider. The filters in PLL noise are assumed to be second order active and passive low pass filters. Through simulation, we analyze the phase noise characteristics of the four components and then investigate the performance improvement factor of each component. Consequently, we derive specifications of VCO, phase detector, divider to meet performance requirement of high data-rate communication using QAM under phase noise influence.

  • The phase error generated in the transmission system affects the performance of digital transmission signal. The phase error are generated by random phase noise and tracking phase error due to denier phenomenon. In the mobile satellite communication system that generates the doppler frequency, which is a system with a movement, the proper system phase noise spectrum should be designed based on analyses for phase noise and static phase error effects. Based on the analyses of the doppler frequency and the phase error for bilateral satellite communication system providing an asynchronous service, the phase noise spectrums for the mobile satellite communication are designed in this paper. Also, the available transmission services under the less doppler effect are proposed and the proper signal source units for a required transmission system can be designed under the proposed system phase noise spectrum.

  • This paper analyzed the phase noise characteristics of frequency-shifting module by figuring out the relationship between the phase noise components of 1st and 2nd local oscillator composing the frequency-shifting module and those of RF output signals shifted in frequency. Also, frequency-shifting module with the improvement of the phase noise performance was designed and implemented by means that the phase noise components of 1st local oscillator were cancelled in the output signal. Output signal has been affected by only phase noise of 2nd local oscillator, which had excellent phase noise performance than that of the 1st local oscillator.

  • Based on the simulation model for phase noise effect, the phase noise performance of communication system using the M-ary APSK modulation method is analyzed in this paper. The phase noise effects for APSK higher order modulation method are modeled by considering the signal constellations of the modulation methods. The simulation model is verified by comparing the analytic results for lower order modulation signals with simulated results for those modulation signals. Based on the simulation model, then, the phase noise effects for M-ary APSK are analyzed. The simulated results for PSK lower order modulation signals are in agreement with the results by the analytic model in the order of 1 %. The proper phase noise effects for M-ary APSK modulation signals are deduced by the simulation model. Also, the required signal-to-noise ratios of phase noise are proposed for phase noise degradations, which are used as the design parameter that considers the phase noise effect.

  • In this paper, we propose two LC voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) that improve both phase noise and tuning range. With both 1/f induced low-frequency noise and low-frequency thermal noise around DC or around harmonics suppressed significantly by the employment of a current-current negative feedback (CCNF) loop, the phase noise in the CCNF LC VCO has been improved by about 10 dB at 6 MHz offset compared to the conventional LC VCO. The phase noise of the CCNF VCO was measured as -112 dBc/Hz at 6 MHz offset from 5.5 GHz carrier frequency. Also, we present a bandwidth-enhanced LC VCO whose tuning range has been increased about 250 % by connecting the varactor to the bases of the cross-coupled pair. The phase noise of the bandwidth-enhanced LC-tank VCO has been improved by about 6 dB at 6 MHz offset compared to the conventional LC VCO. The phase noise reduction has been achieved because the DC-decoupling capacitor Cc prevents the output common-mode level from modulating the varactor bias point, and the signal power increases in the LC-tank resonator. The bandwidth-enhanced LC VCO represents a 12 % bandwidth and phase noise of -108 dBc/Hz at 6 MHz offset.

  • We propose a blind feedforward phase noise mitigation method in the time-domain for a coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems. By exploiting the redundancy of the cyclic prefix (CP), the proposed scheme acquires the overall phase noise difference information during an OFDM block and attempts to mitigate the phase noise in the time domain using a linear approximation. The proposed algorithm mitigates common phase error (CPE) and inter-carrier-interference (ICI) due to phase noise simultaneously, improving the system performance, especially when decision-directed equalizers are used. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed feedforward phase noise mitigation approach in time domain.

  • The system phase noise spectrum distribution for COMS sensor data transmitter and receiver system was proposed in this paper. On the basis of the analyzed design parameter to reduce the phase noise effect in a receiver, the optimal system phase noise were proposed for raw, IRIT and HRIT data transmission that are sensor data, respectively. The proposed system phase noise provides the qualified transmission performance of sensor data and reduces the performance degradation due to phase noise generating in the transmission channel. Also the system phase noise spectrums are utilized in the design of frequency generation source for sensor data transmission and receiver system.

  • A frequency-locked loop(FLL) is a negative-feedback system that uses a frequency detector to improve the phase noise of a voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO). In this work, a theoretical analysis of the phase noise of a VCO in an FLL is presented. The analysis shows that the phase noise of the VCO follows the phase noise determined by the frequency detector and the loop filter within the FLL loop bandwidth, while the phase noise of the VCO appears outside the loop bandwidth. Therefore, it is possible to design an FLL that minimizes the phase noise of the VCO based on the theoretical analysis results. The theoretical phase noise results were verified through experiments.

  • In this paper, we study a novel wireless interference cancellation system(ICS) repeater based on OFDM system with phase noise analysis and performance evaluation. Recently, there were many researches about wireless repeater. The previous study is just considering the feedback channel cancellation algorithm. But, in wireless repeater system, the phase noise effect can exist at up and down converter of wireless repeater. In wireless repeater system, if there are phase noise effects, the performance of system will get worse. So, the phase noise compensator is needed in wireless repeater. Therefore, we propose adaptive phase noise compensator based on OFDM system in order to effectively cancel phase noise. In order to cancel interference, we adapt adaptive phase noise compensator in wireless repeater system. The adaptive phase noise compensator compensates phase noise effect. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze phase noise of wireless repeater based on OFDM system. In this paper, when phase noise power is -15 dBc and phase noise cutoff frequency is 100 kHz at 4QAM, the BER performance of propose algorithm is better about 4 dB than with adaptive equalizer and without phase noise compensator at $10^{-4}$.

  • In this paper, we proposed a phase noise model of a frequency synthesizer for a radar system. Especially, it was proposed a phase noise model in a DAS(Direct Analog Synthesizer) and a frequency up converter system using Leeson's model. The proposed phase noise model was derived from the measurement data of model 1 and evaluated by adapting to model 2 and model 3 frequency synthesizers. The prediction phase noise by modeling was totally matched to the measured data and the effective analysis of the phase noise was done in a frequency synthesizer and a frequency converter of radar system.
