A novel asymmetric multiple-image encryption method using an octonion Fresnel transform (OFST) and a two-dimensional Sine Logistic modulation map (2D-SLMM) is presented. First, a new multiple-image information processing tool termed the octonion Fresneltransform is proposed, and then an efficient method to calculate the OFST of an octonion matrix is developed. Subsequently this tool is applied to process multiple plaintext images, which are represented by octonion algebra, holistically in a vector manner. The complex amplitude, formed from the components of the OFST-transformed original images and modulated by a random phase mask (RPM), is used to derive the ciphertext image by employing an amplitude- and phase-truncation approach in the Fresnel domain. To avoid sending whole RPMs to the receiver side for decryption, a random phase mask generation method based on SLMM, in which only the initial parameters of the chaotic function are needed to generate the RPMs, is designed. To enhance security, the ciphertext and two decryption keys produced in the encryption procedure are permuted by the proposed SLMM-based scrambling method. Numerical simulations have been carried out to demonstrate the proposed scheme's validity, high security, and high resistance to various attacks.
In this paper, we propose wavelet transform image compression method such that an image is decomposed into multiresolutions using biorthogonal wavelet transform with linear phase response property and decomposed subbands are classified by maximum classification gain. The classified data is quantized by allocating bits in accordance with classified class informations within subbands through arbitrary set bit allocation algorithm. And then, quantized data in each subband are entropy coded. The proposed coding method is that the quantized data perform shuffling before entropy coding in order to remove sign bit plane. And the context is assigned by maximum correlation direction for bit plane coding.

In this paper, we propose a new opto-digital object recognition system which has rotation, scale, and shift invariant characteristics. The fourier power spectrum of the object image is modified to get shift invariance. The log-polar transform is used for rotation and scale invariance. And the decision of similarities is performed by nonlinear joint transform correlator (NJTC) that can control the ratio of phase and amplitude signals. Experimental verification of th eproposed optical object recognition system is presented.
Most optical security systems use a 4-f correlator, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, or a joint transform correlator(JTC). Of them, the JTC does not require an accurate optical alignment and has a good potential for real-time processing. In this paper, we propose an image encryption system using a position shift property of the JTC in the Fourier domain and a random phase image. Our encryption system uses two keys: one key is a random phase mask and the other key is a position shift factor. By using two keys, the proposed method can increase the security level of the encryption system. An encrypted image is produced by the Fourier transform for the multiplication image, which resulted from adding position shift functions to an original image, with a random phase mask. The random phase mask and position shift value are used as keys in decryption, simultaneously. For the decryption, both the encrypted image and the key image should be correctly located on the JTC. If the incorrect position shift value or the incorrect key image is used in decryption, the original information can not be obtained. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed system, computer simulation is performed. By analyzing the simulation results in the case of blocking of the encrypted image and affecting of the phase noise, we confirmed that the proposed method has a good tolerance to data loss. These results show that our system is very useful for the optical certification system.

In this paper, we propose an improved image encryption and the shift-tolerance method in the Fourier space using a virtual phase image. The encrypted image is obtained by the Fourier transform of the product of a phase-encoded virtual image, not an original image, and a random phase image. Therefore, even if unauthorized users analyze the encrypted image, we can prevent the possibility of counterfeiting from unauthorized people using virtual image which dose not contain any information from the original image. The decryption technique is simply performed by inverse Fourier transform of the interference pattern between the encrypted image and the Fourier decrypting key, made of proposed phase assignment rule, in frequency domain. We demonstrate the robustness to noise, to data loss and shift of the encrypted image or the Fourier decryption key in the proposed technique.
New experiments focusing on the evolution characteristics of nonlinear wave trains were conducted in a large wave flume. A series of wave trains with added sidebands, varying initial steepness, perturbed amplitudes and frequencies, were physically generated in a long wave flume. The experimental results show that the increasing wave steepness, increases the speed of sidebands growth. To study the frequency and phase modulation, the Morlet wavelet transform is adopted to extract the instantaneous frequency of wave trains and the phase functions of each wave component. From the instantaneous frequency, there are local frequency downshifts, even an effective frequency downshift was not observed. The frequency modulation increases with an increase in amplitude modulation, and abrupt changes of instantaneous frequencies occur at the peak modulation. The wrapped phase functions show that in the early stage of the modulation, the phase of the upper sideband first diverges from that of the carrier waves. However, at the later stage, the discrepancy phase from the carrier wave transformed to the lower sideband. The phase deviations appear in the front of the envelope's peaks. Furthermore, the evolution of the instantaneous frequency exhibits an approximate recurrence-type for the experiment with large imposed sidebands, even when the corresponding recurrence is not observed in the Fourier spectrum.
We used transmission deflectometry to measure the three-dimensional shapes of optical components, and we used the Hilbert transform to retrieve the phases from measured deformed fringe images. Deflectometry is useful for measuring large-scale samples, and specular samples. We have retrieved the phases from deformed fringe images and Hilbert-transformed images, and have used the least-squares method to find the height information. We have verified that phase retrieval using Hilbert transform is useful by computer simulation and experiment.
Sea levels are rising as a result of climate change, and low-lying areas along the coast are at risk of flooding. Therefore, we tried to investigate the relationship between sea level change and climate indices using satellite altimeter data (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1/2/3) and southern oscillation index (SOI) and the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) data. If time domain data were converted to frequency domain, the original data can be analyzed in terms of the periodic components. Fourier transform and Wavelet transform are representative periodic analysis methods. Fourier transform can provide only the periodic signals, whereas wavelet transform can obtain both the periodic signals and their corresponding time location. The cross-wavelet transformation and the wavelet coherence are ideal for analyzing the common periods, correlation and phase difference for two time domain datasets. Our cross-wavelet transform analysis shows that two climate indices (SOI, PDO) and sea level height was a significant in 1-year period. PDO and sea level height were anti-phase. Also, our wavelet coherence analysis reveals when sea level height and climate indices were correlated in short (less than one year) and long periods, which did not appear in the cross wavelet transform. The two wavelet analyses provide the frequency domains of two different time domain datasets but also characterize the periodic components and relative phase difference. Therefore, our research results demonstrates that the wavelet analyses are useful to analyze the periodic component of climatic data and monitor the various oceanic phenomena that are difficult to find in time series analysis.
Position estimation that uses only active phase voltage and current is presented, to perform high accuracy position sensorless control of a SRM drive. By extracting the amplitude of the first switching harmonic terms of phase voltage and current for a PWM period through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the flux-linkage and position are estimated without external hardware circuitry, such as a modulator and demodulator, which result in increased cost, as well as large position estimation error, produced when the motional back EMF is ignored near zero speed. A two-phase SRM drive system, consisting of an asymmetrical converter and a conventional closed-loop PI current controller, is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed position estimation scheme in comprehensive operating conditions. It is shown that the estimated values very closely track the actual values, in dynamic simulations and experiments.

In underwater acoustic communication, the transmitted signals are severely influenced by the reflections from both the sea surface and the sea bottom. As very large reflection signals from these boundaries cause an inter-symbol interference (ISI) effect, the communication quality worsens. A channel estimation-based equalizer is usually adopted to compensate for the reflected signals under the acoustic communication channel. In this study, a feed-forward equalizer (FFE) with the least mean squares (LMS) algorithm was applied to a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission system. Two different types of equalizers were adopted in the QPSK system, namely a real-coefficient equalizer and a complex-coefficient equalizer. The performance of the complex-coefficient equalizer was better than that of two real-coefficient equalizers. Therefore, a Hilbert transform was applied to the real-coefficient binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) system to obtain a complex-coefficient BPSK system. Consequently, we obtained better results than those of a real-coefficient equalizer.
