Nucleophilic substitution reactions of 1-phenylethyl chlorides (1-PEC; YC6H4CH(CH3)Cl) with phenoxides (XC6H4O-) and thiophenoxides (XC6H4S-) are investigated theoretically using the PM3 method. The Bronsted α and β values are greater for the phenoxides indicating a more advanced reaction in the transition state (TS) than for the thiophenoxides. This is supported by a greater magnitude of ρX (- 6.4 ∼ - 7.4) and ρXY (- 0.76) for the phenoxides than for the thiophenoxides (ρX = - 3.6 ∼ - 4.4 and ρXY = - 0.60). The percentage bond order changes, %Δn≠, suggest that the extents of bond making and breaking are similar for the phenoxides and hence the TS is symmetrical, but bond making is somewhat greater than bond cleavage for the thiophenoxides indicating an unsymmetrical TS. The reactions in the gas phase for both nucleophile series proceed by a SN2 mechanism with a tight TS and negative charge development on the reaction center carbon, Cα. The reactions in water investigated with model systems of benzyl and 1-phenylethyl chlorides using the Cramer-Truhlar solvation model (PM3-SM3) indicate that the reactions of 1-PEC are far more complex due to enhanced stabilization of the carbocation by the methyl substitution for a benzylic hydrogen.
DVR is a device that compensates for voltage fluctuations in distribution lines and is generally used in combination with a device that compensates reactive power and improve power factor. Such a coupling compensator has the disadvantage of being relatively difficult to control and bulky. In this paper, mathematical analysis of the maximum magnitude of the compensation voltage, phase angle, compensable reactive power and active power was performed in order to simultaneously compensate the reactive power and voltage fluctuation of the distribution line by applying the power angle control method of the DVR. A control algorithm for charging active power to the battery and supplying stored energy when the voltage is changed was developed and the results were confirmed through Matlab simulation.
This paper proposes an IEEE 802.15.4m compliant TV white-space orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (TVWS)-(OFDM) radio frequency (RF) transceiver that can be adopted in advanced metering infrastructures, universal remote controllers, smart factories, consumer electronics, and other areas. The proposed TVWS-OFDM RF transceiver consists of a receiver, a transmitter, a 25% duty-cycle local oscillator generator, and a delta-sigma fractional-N phase-locked loop. In the TV band from 470 MHz to 698 MHz, the highly linear RF transmitter protects the occupied TV signals, and the high-Q filtering RF receiver is tolerable to in-band interferers as strong as -20 dBm at a 3-MHz offset. The proposed TVWS-OFDM RF transceiver is fabricated using a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and consumes 47 mA in the Tx mode and 35 mA in the Rx mode. The fabricated chip shows a Tx average power of 0 dBm with an error-vector-magnitude of < 3%, and a sensitivity level of -103 dBm with a packet-error-rate of < 3%. Using the implemented TVWS-OFDM modules, a public demonstration of electricity metering was successfully carried out.

A stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was employed to measure the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. The out-of-plane velocity component was determined using two CCD cameras with the angular displacement configuration. Four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of four different blade phases and ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the near-wake region from the trailing edge to one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were generated periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate have large values at the locations of tip and trailing vortices. As the flow goes downstream, the turbulence intensity, the strength of tip vortices and the magnitude of out-of-plane velocity component at trailing vortices are decreased due to viscous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction.

In this paper, design of Wound Rotor Synchronous Motor(WRSM) for Integrated Starter and Generator(ISG) is performed based on Finite Element Analysis(FEA). WRSM can control not only magnitude and phase of armature current, but also field current. Thus, various control methods can be considered. Since driving characteristic of WRSM depends greatly on the control method, characteristic analysis accoding to possible driving current combination is reguired. Especially in high speed region, the control method that reduces unnecessary d-axis current by reducing field current is possible, which is similar to field weakening control. By the current combination reducing field and d-axis current, the design minimizing copper loss to increase efficiency on identical driving point is possible. In this paper, high efficient WRSM is designed applying the current combination which can minimize copper loss on each driving point.

This study presents a new method of system modeling by using the Discrete Fourier Transform for the position control system of DC Motor. And the proposed method is similar to the method of System Identification by analysis of correlation of the measured input-output data. The measured output signals are transformed to the frequency domain using DFT. The Fourier Spectrum of the transformed signals is used for knowing to the feature of having an important effect on the system. And transfer function of the second order system is estimated by the dominant parameter which is computed in the magnitude and the phase of Fourier spectrum of the transformed signals. In addition, the output signal includes the unique feature of system. So, although the basic parameter of the system is unknown for us, the proposed method has an advantage to system modeling. And the controller is easily designed by the estimated transfer function. Thus, in this paper, the proposed method is applied to the system modeling for the position control system of DC Motor and the PD-controller is designed by the estimated model. And the efficiency and the reliability of the proposed method are verified by the experimental result.

Carbon nanotubes(CNTs), since their first discovery, have been considered as new promising materials in various fields of applications including field emission displays, memory devices, electrodes, NEMS constituents, hydrogen storages and reinforcements in composites due to their extra-ordinary properties. The carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites have attracted attention owing to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties and are expected to overcome the limit of conventional materials. Various application areas are possible for carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites through the functionalization of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites have been fabricated by liquid phase process including surface functionalization and dispersion of CNTs within organic solvent. In case of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the mechanical strength and electrical conducting can be improved by more than an order of magnitude. The carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites can be applied to high strength polymers, conductive polymers, optical limiters and EMI materials. In spite of successful development of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the researches on carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic matrix nanocomposites show limitations due to a difficulty in homogeneous distribution of carbon nanotubes within inorganic matrix. Therefore, the enhancement of carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic nanocomposites is under investigation to maximize the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes. To overcome the current limitations, novel processes, including intensive milling process, sol-gel process, in-situ process and spark plasma sintering of nanocomposite powders are being investigated. In this presentation, current research status on carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites with various matrices are reviewed.
A more specialized area of transient evaluations is transmission line fault-detecting and protection system. During the first cycle or two following a power system fault, a high-speed protective relay is expected to make a decision as to the severity or location of the fault, usually based on 60 Hz information, i.e. the phase and magnitude of 60 Hz voltage or current signals. It is precisely at this time however that the signal is badly corrupted by noise, in the form of a de offset or frequencies above 50 Hz. One of several possible sources of transients in protection measuring signals is in the primary system for which protection is required in its response to the impact of short circuit fault on-set. Other sources are in the primary voltage and current transducers from which protection signals are derived, and, often of particular importance, in the interface circuits between the transducer secondaries and the comparator and measuring elements of the protection system. However, the noise signals that will be described in this paper are due to the main power system only and do not include errors due to current or voltage transducers.

One of the unresolved questions in articular cartilage biomechanics is the magnitude of the dynamic modulus and tissue compressive strains under physiological loading conditions. The objective of this study was to characterize the dynamic modulus and compressive strain magnitudes of bovine articular cartilage at physiological compressive stress level and loading frequency. Four bovine calf shoulder joints (ages 2-4 months) were loaded in Instron testing system under load control, with a load amplitude up to 800 N and loading frequency of 1 Hz, resulting in peak engineering stress amplitude of ${\sim}5.8\;MPa$. The corresponding peak deformation of the articular layer reached ${\sim}27%$ of its thickness. The effective dynamic modulus determined from the slope of stress versus strain curve was ${\sim}23\;MPa$, and the phase angle difference between the applied stress and measured strain which is equivalent to the area of the hystresis loop in the stress-strain response was ${\sim}8.3^{\circ}$. These results are representative of the functional properties of articular cartilage in a physiological loading environment. This study provides novel experimental findings on the physiological strain magnitudes and dynamic modulus achieved in intact articular layers under cyclical loading conditions.
