  • By self-homodyne method we measured the relative phase fluctuation of a light wave. Balanced detection system can eliminate local oscillator excess noise and multiport detection makes it possible ot measure the phase change of the signal beam. Deriving the SB(Signal Beam) and the LO(Local Oscillator) from the same laser source, we find the SB maintain constant phase relative to that of the LO. We have introduced a phase fluctuation in the SB by modulating the beam path of the SB. The measured phase fluctuation agreed well with the predicted one, thereby we confirmed the reliability of our system.

  • Phase resonance in Francis type hydraulic turbine is studied. The phase resonance is a phenomenon that the pressure fluctuation in the penstock of hydraulic turbine installation can become very large when the pressure waves from each guide vane caused by the interaction with the runner vane reach the penstock with the same phase. Experimental and numerical studies have been carried out using a centrifugal fan. In the present study, comparisons between the pump mode and the turbine mode operations are made. The experimental and numerical results show that the rotational direction of the rotor does not affect characteristics of the pressure fluctuation but the propagation direction of the rotorstator interaction mode plays an important role. Flow rate fluctuations through the stator are examined numerically. It has been found that the blade passing flow rate fluctuation component can be evaluated by the difference of the fluctuating pressure at the inlet and the outlet of the stator. The amplitude of the blade passage component of the pressure fluctuation is greater at the stator inlet than the one at the stator outlet. The rotor-stator interaction mode component is almost identical at the inlet and the outlet of the stator. It was demonstrated that the pressure fluctuation in the volute and connecting pipe normalized by the flow rate fluctuation becomes the same for pump and turbine mode operations, and depends on the rotational direction on the interaction mode.

  • Vibration transient generated by developing localized fault in gear can be used as indicators in gear fault detection. In this paper, we propose the zoomed phase map for a fault signal using continuous wavelet transfers to detect this vibration transient. Local fault induces the abrupt fluctuation of load exciting tooth and phase lag in the vibration signal measured on the gearbox. The relatively large fault like "tip breakage" easily can be detected by the clear fluctuation of exciting load. However, minor fault like "initial pitting"cannot be detected using the load fluctuation. To defect this kind of minor fault, the phase map for a fault signal is taken into account. The phase lag by minor fault is observed well in the zoomed phase map.

  • The wave-particle duality of light plays important role in quantum optics and it often produces a result different from that of classical wave theory. In this paper, we study the intensity and phase fluctuation of light which show certain change after light goes through a beam splitter, and show the difference between the classical and quantum theory. We show quantitatively that the uncertainty of phase increases at the output of a beam splitter due to the contribution of vacuum fluctuation, even though classical theory predicts no such change in phase fluctuation. The expectation values of normally ordered operators are introduced where the vacuum effect is naturally eliminated, and it is shown that the classical informations are recovered in this way. Analysis on the expectation values produces a distinction between measured phase and inferred phase values and they are related through the contribution of vacuum field.

  • Effect of fluctuation imposed on the inflow to LOX manifold of liquid rocket has been analyzed numerically. Time-varying fluctuation was idealized by the sinusoidal signal and three different representative frequencies were considered. It was found that all the frequencies tested produced the consistent flow reactions in the manifold in that the place close to the region of infection showed oscillatory flow rate through injector orifices in phase with the inflow fluctuation whereas the other side exhibits characteristics which are out of phase.

  • Rheological behavior of thermoset/thermoplastic blends of epoxy/polyethersulphone (PES) was monitored during curing of the epoxy resin. During the isothermal curing of the mixture, a fluctuation in viscosity just before the abrupt viscosity increase was observed. This fluctuation is found to be due to the phase separation of PES from the matrix epoxy resin during the curing. The experimentally observed viscosity fluctuation is simulated with a simple two phase suspension model in terms of the increase in domain size. The viscosity profiles obtained experimentally at different isothermal curing temperatures are in good agreement with the predictions from the simple model taking into account the viscosity change due to the growth of PES domain and the network formation of the epoxy matrix.

  • In order to realize In-line and convenient measurement for solid-gas two phase flows, Light Transmission Fluctuation (LTF) based on the random variation of transmitted light intensity, light scattering theory and cross-correlation method was presented for online measurement of particle size, concentration and velocity. The statistical relationship among transmitted light intensity, particle size and particle number in measurement zone was described by Beer-Lambert Law. Accordingly, the particle size and concentration were determined from the fluctuation signal of transmitted light intensity. Simultaneously, the particle velocity was calculated by cross-correlation analysis of two neighboring light beams. By considering the influence of concentration variation in industrial applications, the improved algorithm based on spectral analysis of transmitted light intensity was proposed to improve measurement accuracy and stability. Therefore, the online measurement system based on LTF was developed and applied to measure pulverized coal in power station and raw material in cement plant. The particle size, concentration and velocity of powder were monitored in real-time. It can provide important references for optimal control, energy saving and emission reduction of energy-intensive industries.

  • In order to solve the neutral-point voltage fluctuation problem of three-phase three-level T-type inverters (TPTLTIs), the unbalance characteristics of capacitor voltages under different switching states and the mechanism of neutral-point voltage fluctuation are revealed. Based on the mathematical model of a TPTLTI, a feed-forward voltage balancing control strategy of DC-link capacitor voltages error is proposed. The strategy generates a DC bias voltage using a capacitor voltage loop with a proportional integral (PI) controller. The proposed strategy can suppress the neutral-point voltage fluctuation effectively and improve the quality of output currents. The correctness of the theoretical analysis is verified through simulations. An experimental prototype of a TPTLTI based on Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is built. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified through experiment. The results from simulations and experiment match very well.

  • The instability of two-phase loop thermosyphons was investigated experimentally and analytically. Three orifice type inserts were used to study the effect of change in the pressure drop in the flow channel of the TLT on the flow instability and temperature fluctuation. It is observed that a decrease in the size of the orifice insert from 3.7 mm (no insert) to 0.71 mm drastically reduced the fluctuation of the temperature, especially at the evaporator section of the TLT. With the orifice type insert of 0.71 mm for the TLT, the overall temperature fluctuation was almost completely eliminated, especially at higher power input to the TLT The analysis based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory seems to predict reasonable well the loop stability state of the TLT with experimentally determined constant factors.
