  • This study was conducted to select new variants with different characteristics in plant height, leaf color, and petal color of plantain lily (Hosta plantaginea) and Japanese farfugium (Farfugium japonicum). After 10-30Gy ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation to seeds of both species, seed germination, variant induction, growth of variants, and survival ratios were estimated. Days required for seed germination were lengthened and % seed germination decreased as the dosage of ${\gamma}-ray$ increased over 20Gy. Lethal dose ($LD_{50}$) for plantain lily and Japanese farfugium were 30Gy and 25Gy, respectively. Plantain lily and Japanese farfugium treated by more than 20Gy ${\gamma}-ray$ showed dwarf characteristics in growth, and variations in leaf and petal colors. Total 166 variants in plantain lily were induced by ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation in a $M_1$ generation, among which 12 promising variants were selected in a $M_2$ generation. Total 57 variants of Japanese farfugium were induced by ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation in a $M_1$ generation, among which nine promising variants were selected in a $M_2$ generation.

  • A New spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Water Fog' was bred by open pollination of 'Angaesoguk'. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2004 to 2006 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Water Fog' was 24 October, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. It had flower diameter of 2.3 cm, 46.5 petals and 34.4 flowers per stem in autumn. The petal was narrow(0.4cm) and the color of petal was white with presence of green at flower center. Days to flower from short-day start for 'Water Fog' was about 48 in spring. 'Water Fog' showed the vase life of 22.6 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Water Fog' would be cultured under greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of changes in the light environment caused by the daylight disturbance on the productivity and quality of the standard cut flower rose cultivar 'Monet'. It was artificially shaded to obstruct the sunlight and the productivity and growing characteristics of roses according to the time of daylight disturbance were investigated. The number of cut flowers per unit area (3.3m2) of the cut flower rose 'Monet' was 40 stems in the control, while in the 4-hour, 8-hour, and 12-hour treatments, it was 32, 29, and 25, respectively. As the daylight disturbance time was increased, the number of cut flowers showed a tendency to decrease. In the case of cut flower characteristics related to the quality of cut roses, all characteristics such as flower width, flower height, petal length, and petal width, decreased by 10 to 20% in the 12-hour treatment compared to the control. In addition, growth characteristics such as peduncle length, peduncle thickness, and cut flower height, which determine the marketability of cut roses, also tended to decrease as the daylight disturbance time increased. On the other hand, the number of days to flowering increased by 14.0% from 24.3 to 27.7. The overall growth characteristics were contracted and flowering was delayed as the time of daylight disturbance increased. In the results of this study, as the daylight disturbance time increased, flower size, cut flower length, and fresh weight was decreased. This is due to the decrease in the total photosynthetic amount as the daily average photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was decreased, resulting in a decrease in the quality of roses. It is judged that it is because they do not receive enough carbohydrates necessary for growth and development.

  • To investigate the scattering layer effect of a $TiO_2$ multilayer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), we designed a new DSSC system, assembled with a CdS-$TiO_2$ scattering layer electrode. A high-magnification SEM image exhibited hollyhock-like particles with a width of 1.5-2.0 ${\mu}m$ that were aggregated into 10-nm clumps in a hexagonal petal shape. The efficiency was higher in the DSSC assembled with a CdS-$TiO_2$ scattering layer than in the DSSC assembled with $TiO_2$-only layers, due to the decreased resistance in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The short-circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) was increased by approximately 7.26% and the open-circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$) by 2.44% over the 1.0 wt % CdS-$TiO_2$ composite scattering layer and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) in the maximum peak was also enhanced by about 5.0%, compared to the DSSC assembled without the CdS-$TiO_2$scattering layer.

  • A basic spray program for apple in which fungicides are scheduled to spray at 15-day interval from petal fall to late August was formulated on the properties of several selected fungicides. In order to improve it, experimental plots, completely randomized block with 3 replications, were prepared in an orchard of 15 years old Fuji cultivar, and the spray programs in which only one chemical in the basic spray program was substituted with others were applied to each plot. It was revealed that only single substitution of the fungicide in the basic spray program makes a great differences in the control of white rot and bitter rot, and that the control property of the fungicides against the two diseases was quite variable even by the time of application. A simila! ! r trial was conducted in 2002 with a new basic spray program that was formulated with fungicides that have shown best control in each spraying time in the previous trial, similar results were obtained. Applying this method, the usefulness of certain fungicide in the spray program for apple could be properly assessed. Anthracnose of Robinia pseudo-acacia L. caused by Collectotrichum spp.

  • This research proposes measuring of BCG(ballistocardiogram) to monitor heart activities in a non-constrained environment, at home or work. Unlike with ECG, measuring BCG does not require the attachment of leads on the subject's body and allows signal measuring in a non-constrained state. It enables effective long-term monitoring of cardiac conditions. In this study a chair type BCG measurement system to continuous monitor the activity of the heart is implemented. The instrument consists of upper petal and ready for press of chair load cell sensor is attached to measure the change of the object's weight. In order to extract the output ballistic signal from the weight and force sensor signals. Beside the signal processing circuit for the digital conversion, the ballistic signal is detected using DAQ equipment. Signal processing algorithm including wavelet transforms for noise cancellation, template matching for normalization and peak detection in BCG is developed. ECG and BCG were concurrently measured to evaluate the performance of the system, and comparing the characteristics of the two signals verified the possibility of the system in non-constrained and nonconscious health monitoring.

  • A new hybrid, Phalaenopsis 'Pink Marble' was made by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, in 2005. This hybrid was selected from self-crossed progenies of P. '21-1' (collected number) in 1999. In 2001, one line was selected based on the aspects such as flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth. Trials were conducted from 2003 to 2005 for evaluation and selection of this cultivar. 'Pink Marble' had a medium flowering habit and a dark pink spot (RHS, RPN74B) on white petal and sepal when fully opened. The number of flowers on each peduncle was 7.5, and flower diameter was 52.3 cm. The general impression of petals and sepals is a plate shape. The thick sepal could extend the long flowering time. The average length of leaf and peduncle were 16.5 cm and 6.8 cm, respectively. It had a half-erect leaf form, and was a fast-growing cultivar. This hybrid is relatively easy to clone.

  • A fungicidal spray program for effective control of three major apple diseases in Korea (white rot, bitter rot, and Marssonina blotch) was developed. This was based on our previous studies showing that application of ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors (EBIs) in early or mid-August can eradicate white rot infection in fruit and that some protective fungicides show after-infection activity against white rot. The basic spray program focused on control of white rot, the main target disease, and the fungicides were sprayed at 15-day intervals from petal fall to late August using fungicides that show after-infection and EBI activity. The basic spray program was modified over 4 successive years to improve control efficacy against bitter rot and Marssonina blotch, which sometimes cause as much damage as white rot. Modifications to the regime were made every year by replacing one fungicide in the basic program at a specific spraying time. Substitution of only one fungicide in the spray program, even early in the growing season, greatly influenced the final disease incidence at harvest. Applying this principle, a moderately efficient spray program for cv. Fuji that increased the spray interval from 10 to 15 days and thus reduced the number of sprays required per crop season was developed.

  • The fracture propagation mechanism and fractured rock mass failure mechanism were important research in geotechnical engineering field. Many failures and instability in geotechnical engineering were related on fractures propagation, coalescence and interaction in rock mass under the external force. Most of the current research were limited to two-dimensional for the brittleness and transparency of three-dimensional fracture materials couldn't meet the requirements of the experiment. New materials with good transparent and brittleness were developed by authors. The making method of multi fracture specimens were established and made molds that could be reused. The tension-compression ratio of the material reached above 1/6 in normal temperature. Uniaxial and biaxial loading tests of single and double fracture specimens were carried out. Four new fractures were not found in the experiment of two-dimensional fractures such as the fin shaped crack, wrapping wing crack and petal crack and anti-wing crack. The relationship between stress and strain of the specimens were studied. The specimens with the load had experienced four stages of deformation and the process of the fracture propagation was clearly seen in each stage. The expansion characteristics of the fractured specimens were more obvious than the previous research.

  • Recently the word "digital" is widely used in almost every field and is dominating this generation. Digital has become the most significant characteristic representing the 21st century, and is leading change across wide range of our life-styles in our culture and thoughts. New art is in harmony with digital in the 21st century. Digital photography is simpler, faster and newer than the analog system of the past. From ancient times, the nature has been the subject of art, and many designers have studied the ways to create beauty from nature. In this study, I chose the lotus as the subject material of textile design development. The lotus invokes a sense of stillness, and nestles many fluid elements, including the curved fluid lotus, rhythmic lotus petal, sinuous lotus leaf, radial vein, lotus pip and oval seed. Therefore, I tried to use these elements of lotus for development of textile design. For this purpose, I photographed the lotus with a digital camera as equipment of design development. Then, on computer, I have developed six textile designs through the process of modification and editing by using the adobe illustrator program.
