A palustrine wetland is a type of a wetland that prevails in Korea as well as an ecosystem that provides various ecological functions and has affluent biodiversity. This study was conducted to understand the characteristics of vegetation in a palustrine wetland by analyzing a life form and naturalized plants, in order to present the maintenance and utilization plan of a small wetland. A total of 249 taxa including 76 families, 188 generics, 209 species, 38 varieties and 2 forma were found at six investigated wetlands. As a result of the appearance ratio analysis, Therophytes (37.8%) with 94 taxa and Hemicryptophytes (31.3%) with 78 taxa were in order of life form, and Gramineae (14.1 %) with 35 taxa and Compositae (11.2 %) with 28 taxa were in order of family level. These were deemed representative vegetation in a palustrine wetland. Equosetum arvense, Phragmites communis, Commelina communis, Persicaria thunbergii, Arenaria serpyllifolia, Stellaria media, Erigeron annuus, Erigeron canadensis and Artemisia princeps var, orientalis were found continuously for a period of investigation in all sites. Equosetum arvense, Phragmites communis and Persicaria thunbergii were species with high appearance frequency. Especially, Persicaria thunbergii was construed high in a cover ratio in May as it develop first among Hydrophytes and form a canopy sooner than anything else. We found that a degree of naturalization and an urbanization index appear comparatively high in Yeongok-ri, Cheonan, Gangjang-ri, Asan and Yodang-ri, Hwasung, which is construed due to artificial interference, such as fanning, fishing, swimming and green-tour program. These results would be used to utilize in restoring a deserted and damaged wetland and to provide fundamental data in creating a wetland as follows.
This study was conducted to investigate the distribution pattern of plants on streamside of Kyonganchon, which is a tributary of the Han River, and to determine the relationships between plant distribution and environmental factors. Fifteen study sites were selected along the Kyonganchon, and vegetation distribution pattern and soil environmental factors were determined. The most frequently ocurring species in the study sites were Persicaria thunbergii, Persicaria hydropiper, Echinochloa crus-galli and Bidens frondosa, and among them the two Persicaria species were dominants of the community. Many species showed different distribution along the stream:Chenopodium album, Equisetum arvense and Setaria viridies occurred in the upstream region, while Rumex crispus, Leonurus sibiricus and Rorippa islandica occurred in the middle and downstream regions. Analysis of soil properties showed that organic matter and clay content were higher in the upstream region while sand content was higher in the downstream region. The results of DCA ordination showed that axis one was positively correlated with organic matter and clay content and negatively correlated with sand content, indicating that the distribution pattern of vegetation along the Kyonganchon was determined by elevational gradient from upstream to downstream region or gradient of stream width and water level, and by soil organic matter content and soil texture related to these gradients.
This study presents the flow response and habitat region of the aquatic plants in the urban streams. Phragmites japonica, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Persicaria blumei and Persicaria thunbergii were selected as for typical plants. Flow response and habitat region were determined by flow velocity/depth and vegetation growth. Stages for flow response of the aquatic plants were classified into stable, recovered, damaged and swept away. Criteria between the recovered and damaged stage was determined by the bending angle of $30{\sim}50^{\circ}$. Capability against flow was high in the order of Phragmites japonica, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, Persicaria blumei and Persicaria thunbergi. Phragmites japonica and Phragmites communis were capable of coping with flow depth 0.9 m, flow velocity 1.5 m/s and with flow depth 1.0 m, flow velocity 0.9 m/s, respectively. Miscanthus sacchariflorus was capable within the region of flow depth 1.0 m and flow velocity 0.6 m/s. Persicaria blumei and Persicaria thunbergii were less capable than the other aquatic plants and were vulnerable exceeding the water depth of 1.0 m. Habitat regions by the flow response of each plants were suggested.
In this research we determined the levels of heavy metals in soil and metal-accumulating plants from a D military shooting site in the Kyungkido district of Korea. The data obtained may be useful in the development of methods for the efficient phytoremediation of contaminated soil. The total Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the soil were found to be 1.67-5.04 mg/kg, 52.51-106.26 mg/kg, 37.24-90.32mg/kg, and 111.45-188.19mg/kg, respectively. These results show that the soil is contaminated with Cd and Cu, and this contamination is particularly severe in the case of Cd because of its high bioavailability (25-57% of the total metal in the soil is exchangeable). The high concentrations of heavy metals in the shoots of Persicaria thunbergii and Artemisia princeps var. orientalis indicate that these plants (all perennial herbs) accumulate heavy metal efficiently. Further, these plants were found to contain more Cd in its shoots (>60% of the total metal found in the plant) than any other plant; these results indicate that these native species are particularly suited to use in Cd phytoextraction.
This study was conducted to get some vegetation information and to find out a way to conseue the ecosystem in the Dongjin River. The riparian vegetation was investigated by Zurich-Montpellier school's method from June 2001 to March 2002. The number of riparian plants were 73 families, 188 genera, 238 species, 33 varieties or 272 Taxa in Dongjin River. The characteristics of life farm spectra were 97 therophytes (35.7%), 78 hydrophytes (28.7%), 41 hemicryptophytes (15.1%) 22 geophytes (8.1%), and 12 chamaephytes (4.4%). The riparian vegetation was identified 8 plant communities (Potamogeton brechtoldii, Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, Potamogeton malaianus, Phragmites japonica, Persicaria thunbergii, Cardamine scutata, Persicaria hydropiper) in upstream, 4 plant communities (Zizania latifoliar, Phragmites communis, Persicaria thunbergii, Humulus japonicus) in midstream and 8 plant communities (Hydrocharis dubia, Ceratophyllum demersum, Trapa japonica, Zizania latifolia, Paspalum distichum, Phragmites communis, Pericaria thunbergii, Amphicarpaea edgeworthii) in downstream of the Dongjin River.
When Persicaria thunbergii and Rumex crispus were treated with Cd($NO_3$)$_2$ and Pb($NO_3$)$_2$ of 5 or 10 mM for 5 days, the amount of bioaccumulation of $Pb^{2+}$ in the leaf of P. thunbergii was 2.87-8.08$\mu\textrm{g}$/g and that of $Cd^{2+}$ was 0.82-2.79$\mu\textrm{g}$/g. In the case of P. thunbergii, the concentration of $Pb^{2+}$ in the leaf was higher than that of $Cd^{2+}$. On the other hand, in R. crispus, the concentration of $Cd^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ were similar as follows ; 1.49$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in $Cd^{2+}$ 5mM, 2.90$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in Cd2+ 10mM, 1.83$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in $Pb^{2+}$ 5mM and 2.73$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in $Pb^{2+}$ 10mM. The remaining rate of heavy metals and the variation of pH in the cultured soil decreased as compared with control (100 % and pH 6.48) after 5 days as follows; to 77.l% and pH 6.39 in $Cd^{2+}$ 5mM, 90.2% and pH 5.79 in $Cd^{2+}$ 10 mM, 81.1% and pH 6.00 in $Pb^{2+}$ 5mM, and 85.7% and pH 5.80 in $Pb^{2+}$ 10 mM. The result of size exclusion chromatography, several phytochelatins were seperated from the extract of the leaf of both plants treated with heavy metals. The molecular mass of these phytochelatins were estimated as follows; in the case of P. thunbergii, about 4,300-8,600 da by $Cd^{2+}$ and about 3,200-9,700 da by $Pb^{2+}$, and in R. crispus, about 4,300 da by $Cd^{2+}$ and about 3,200-7,500 da by $Pb^{2+}$. In addition, $A_{254}$ of these phytochelatins were higher than $A_{280}$. [Phytochelatin, Persicaria thunbergii, Rumex crispus]
This study was carried out to offer the natural restoration plan of river by objective analyzing the vegetation and flora around stream in Mt. Midong and to develop the materials for restoration. The flora were summarized as 95 taxa; 33 families, 84 genera, 81 species and 14 varieties. The naturalized plants were 15 taxa; Dactylis glmerata, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Rumex crispus, Chenopodium glaucum, Trifolium repens, Hibiscus trionum, Oenothera lamarckiana, Ambrosia artemisifolia var. elatior, Aster pilosus, Erigeron annuus, Erigeron canadensis, Coreopsis tinctoria, Taraxacum officinale, Bidens frondosa and Cosmos bipinnatus. The major dominant species was Phragmites japonica in all communites and semi dominant species were Salix gracilistyla, Phalaris arundinacea, Bidens frondosa and Persicaria thunbergii. To restore the river, we must consider the biddiversity, habitats and so forth, and use the plant materials like Phragmites japonica, Salix gracilistyla, Persicaria thunbergii and Veronica anagallis-aquatica.
For the consideration of phytoremediation, TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ and Pb$^{2+}$ were analysed in the soil of the habitats and the leaf stem and root of Persicaria thunbergii in the different localities of Bong-Dong river In the soil and plant samples of research areas, TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ was not detected but, $Pb^{2+}$ detected as follows; about 7.5~15.5$mu\textrm{g}$/g in the soil of habitats, about 11.7~18.4 $mu\textrm{g}$/g in the leaf, about 7.~15.5$mu\textrm{g}$/g in the stem and about 89.1~193.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/g in the root of P. thunebrgii and the correlation coefficient value between the $Pb^{2+}$ contents in soil and P. thunbergii was 0.814(>t12, 0.01). After P thunbergii was treated with Cd(NO$_3$)$_2$and Pb(NO$_3$)$_2$of 5 and 10mM, the bioaccumulation of TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ in the leaf of plant, the remaining mass of heavy metals and the variation of pH in the soil, and the increasing rate(%) of phytochelatin in plant were examined. The concentrations of TEX>$Cd^{2+}$and $Pb^{2+}$ in the leaf as follows, in the case of TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ about 0.82~2.79$\mu\textrm{g}$/g and in $Pb^{2+}$, about 2.87~8.08$\mu\textrm{g}$/g. The remaining mass of heavy metals and the variation of pH in the cultured soil decreased as follows; about 77.1% and pH6.39 in TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ 5mM, about 90.2% and pH5.79 in TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ 10mM, about 81.1% and pH6.00 in $Pb^{2+}$ 5mM and about 85.7% and pH5.80 in Pb$^{2+}$ 10mM. The phytochelatin were increased in plant samples treated with 10mM Cd(NO$_3$)$_2$and Pb(NO$_3$)$_2$as follows; about 259% by TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ and about 305% by Pb$^{2+}$ be compared with control. and the molecular weight(da) of these phytochelatins were estimated about 4,300~8,600da in the case of the treatment of TEX>$Cd^{2+}$ and about 3,200~9,700 in $Pb^{2+}$./TEX>.
Riparian vegetation gives basic habitats for animal and other biological organisms. It is one of essential landscapes in river ecosystem. This floral study was conducted to give basic information for management of the Geum river ecosystem. We discovered total 69 plant communities out of 40 sites studied and mean 8 plant communities were analysed per study site. Salix koreensis and Salix subfragilis community were dominant of all communities at tree layer and Salix gracilistyla and Rubus parvifolius were dominant communities at shrub layer. Phalaris arundinacea, Phragmites japonica, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Artemisia princeps var. orientalis appeared most as perennial grasses and Humulus japonicus, Persicaria thunbergii and Persicaria hydropiper appeared most as annual grasses. Robinia pseudoacacia, Amorpha fruticosa and Bidens frondosa were frequently present as exotic species. Grass communities were higher than tree communities because of human disturbance by artificial banks. The number of species was 182 appeared as 53 families 144 species, 34 varieties and 4 forma and mean species number was 25.5 per site. The most abundant site was Yanggang bridge site (14 vegetation association, 49 species) and the least abundant site was Namdaechon, Muju site (3 vegetation association, 12 species). We suggest that continuous riparian vegetation monitoring should be carried out to manage water environment ecologically.
