Amino-terminal arginylation as a degradation signal for selective autophagy

  • The ubiquitin-proteasome system and the autophagy lysosome system are the two major protein degradation machineries in eukaryotic cells. These two systems coordinate the removal of unwanted intracellular materials, but the mechanism by which they achieve this synchronization is largely unknown. The ubiquitination of substrates serves as a universal degradation signal for both systems. Our study revealed that the amino-terminal Arg, a canonical N-degron in the ubiquitin-proteasome system, also acts as a degradation signal in autophagy. We showed that many ER residents, such as BiP, contain evolutionally conserved arginylation permissive pro-N-degrons, and that certain inducers like dsDNA or proteasome inhibitors cause their translocation into the cytoplasm where they bind misfolded proteins and undergo amino-terminal arginylation by arginyl transferase 1 (ATE1). The amino-terminal Arg of BiP binds p62, which triggers p62 oligomerization and enhances p62-LC3 interaction, thereby stimulating autophagic delivery and degradation of misfolded proteins, promoting cell survival. This study reveals a novel ubiquitin-independent mechanism for the selective autophagy pathway, and provides an insight into how these two major protein degradation pathways communicate in cells to dispose the unwanted proteins.   • Participants in this study were 1.245 4th and 5th graders and their parents from 8 elementary schools in Seoul, Daejeon, and Pusan. Using the Korean Youth Self-Report (K-YSR), children's behavior problems were measured and assigned to either clinical or normal groups. Between group differences were that the educational level of mothers of internalizing girls was lower than that of normal girls. Girls with internalizing problems had more siblings than normal girls. Parents of both boys and girls with either internalizing or externalizing problems were more rejecting and/or permissive than parents of children without behavior problems. Fathers of children with behavior problems perceived more marital conflicts, while mothers whose children have behavior problems had more negative family-of-origin experiences compared to parents of normal children.

아동이 지각한 부모의 양육행동이 아동의 공격성에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Children's Perceived Parenting Behaviors on Their Aggression)

  • This study investigated the effect of the children's perceived parenting behaviors on their aggression. Subjects were 309 (156 boys and 153 girls) 5th and 6th grade elementary school children living in Jellanamdo. The questionnaire for the children's parenting behavior evaluation and their aggression was used. The data were analyzed by frequencies, Cronbach' ${\alpha}$, t-test and multiple regression. Results showed that the children perceived their parents affectionately and rationally and especially, they perceived their mother affectionately and rationally than their father. Meantime, the children perceived their aggression at a low level on the whole. Parenting behavior and children's aggression differed according to the gender. Fathers' coercive and mothers' permissive parenting predicted the children's proactive aggression. Fathers' coercive, affective and mother's aggression-compensatory parenting predicted children's reactive aggression. Fathers' coercive parenting was only significant predictor for the children's relational aggression and fathers' coercive, aggression- compensatory parenting predicted children's total aggression. Fathers' participation for reducing children's aggression was discussed.

낙태허용 사유에 대한 여학생의 인식이 낙태예방정책 요구도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Attitudes Toward Reasons for which Abortion is Permitted on Needs for Abortion Prevention Policies among Female Students)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of attitudes toward reasons for which abortion is permitted on needs for abortion prevention policies among 232 unmarried female students at the middle schools, high schools, and universities located in Seoul. The respondents were requested to complete the self-administered questionnaire, and the principal component analysis, t-tests, Pearson's correlations, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed for analyzing data. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the principal component analysis identified three reasons for which abortion is permitted. These are reasons under the maternal & child health law, socioeconomic reasons, and normatively unqualified reasons. Second, the female students showed permissive attitudes toward reasons for abortion under the maternal & child health law, disapproval attitudes toward socioeconomic reasons for abortion, and neutral attitudes toward abortion by normatively unqualified reasons. Students also showed high levels of needs for abortion prevention policies. Finally, hierarchical regression analyses revealed that female students' attitudes toward reasons for which abortion is permitted significantly predicted levels of needs for abortion prevention policies, after controlling their sciodemographic characteristics. The implications of the study results are discussed.

청소년의 성허용성과 가족기능 및 부모와의 의사소통 (The Study on Sexual Permissiveness, Family Function and Parent-Adolescent Communication in Adolescents)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the relationship between sexual permissiveness, family function and parent-adolescent communication among adolescents. Method: A descriptive correlation approach was used and the participants were 956 male and female students. Data were collected by questionnaire survey using convenience sampling. The instruments were the Family APGAR Questionnaire by Smilkstein(1978), PAC by Olson and Barnes(1982), and the Premarital Sexual Permissiveness Questionnaire by Reiss(1967). Data were analyzed using the SPSS 10.0 program with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test, and ANOVA. Results: Family function was significant according to school record, economic status, living arrangement of parent. Parent-Adolescent Communication was significant according to religion, economic status, having a boy/girl friend, and experience of sexual intercourse. Sexual permissiveness was significant for all except economic status. Correlation among the variables showed that parent-adolescent communication was negatively correlated to sexual permissiveness(r=-.127, p=.000) and positively to family function(r=.368, p=.000). Conclusion: The findings suggest that parent-adolescent communication and family function are associated with sexual permissiveness, and the findings of this study are expected to make a contribution to creating an ideal sexual culture for youth.

배플수에 따른 원통다관형 열교환기 성능에 관한 실험 적 연구 (An Experimental Study of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Performance with Baffle Spacing)

  • The shell and tube heat exchangers were introduced to apply to a big capacity condenser and a high pressure feed water heater for power plant in the beginning of 1990s. Design and manufacturing technology fur shell and tube heat exchangers have been developed until now. But it is very difficult to calculate the expected performance characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchanger, because there are many design parameters to be considered according to internal structure and the shell side heat transfer mechanism complicately related to the design parameters. Design parameters to be considered in the design stage of shell and tube heat exchanger are shell and tube side fluids, flow rate, inlet and outlet temperature, physical properties, type of heat exchanger, outer diameter, thickness, length of tube, tube arrangement, tube pitch, permissive pressure loss on both sides, type of baffle plate, baffle cutting ratio. The propose of study is an analysis TEMA(Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) E shell and tube heat exchanger performance with changing a number of baffles(3, 5, 7, 9, 11) and tubes(16, 20) and determined optimal baffle spacing.

단·중경간 강형교 거더의 횡분배 모델 (Girder Distribution Model for Existing Short and Medium Span Steel Girder Bridges)

  • The objective of this work is to verify the Code specified girder distribution factors for short and medium span bridges. To accomplish this objective, field tests were carried out on seventeen simply supported highway bridges. This paper presents the procedure and results of field tests that were performed to verify girder distribution factors. Finite Element analyses previously performed at the University of Michigan indicated that in most cases currently used girder distribution factors specified in AASHTO Codes are too conservative. However, these studies also showed that for short spans and short girder spacings, the girder distribution factors can be too permissive. Therefore, this paper focused on experimental evaluation of girder distribution factors for short and medium span steel girder bridges. The results were compared with the distribution factors specified by AASHTO Standard (2000) and AASHTO LRFD Code (1998). It has been found that the measured girder distribution factors are lower than AASHTO values in most cases, and sometimes the code specified values are overly conservative. The research work involved formulation of the testing procedure, selection of structure, installation of equipment, measurements, and interpretation of the results.

미국의 중학교 과학수업에서 학생들의 흥미와 창의성을 높이는 수업요소 (Identification of Instructional Components to Increase Students' Interest and Creativity in American Science Classrooms)

  • 본 연구는 미국의 한 중학교 과학수업에서 학생들의 흥미와 창의성을 높이는 수업요소를 추출하려는 목적으로 실시되었다. 7학년 두 학급을 대상으로 하여 11차시씩의 수업을 관찰하였고, 사전 사후에 흥미검사와 창의성 검사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 소집단 구체적 체험 활동이 흥미와 창의성을 높이는데 가장 좋은 방법임을 알 수 있었다. 그 외에 흥미를 높이는 방법들로는 개별화된 보조에 따른 수업 진행, 동료교수(peer teaching)가 가능한 모둠별 실험을 위한 충분한 시간 제공, 언제나 어떤 질문에 대해서도 여유있고 허용적인 분위기, 다양한 매체, 특히 첨단 장비의 활용, 목표지향적이고 개인책무를 높인 요약 게임의 사용 등이 관찰되었다. 창의성을 높이는 방법으로는 흥미를 높이기, 실험 전에 가설을 만들어 보기, 실험 시간을 충분히 가지고 여러 가지 방법으로 해보기 등이 관찰되었다.

학령기 아동의 외/내현적 자기애와 자기통제 및 어머니 양육행동 간 관계 (The Relationship between School-Age Children's Overt/Covert Narcissism with Self-Control and Mothers' Parenting)

  • This study investigated the relationship between school-age children's overt/covert narcissism with self-control and mothers' parenting. The subjects were 517 children in the 5th and 6th grades attending elementary schools located in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, Pearson's correlation, multiple regressions and SPSS Win 19.0 was used. The results were as follows: (1) School-age children's overt narcissism differed in boys and girls. However, this was not the case for covert narcissism. (2) The overt narcissism of school-age boys and girls was positively correlated with self-control. However covert narcissism was negatively correlated with self-control. (3) The active-responsive and active-restrictive parenting of mothers influenced on the overt narcissism of school-age boys, while the active-responsive parenting of mothers influenced the overt narcissism of school-age girls. Also, the active-responsive and active-restrictive parenting of mothers influenced the covert narcissism of school-age boys, while the active-responsive and passive-permissive parenting of mothers influenced the overt narcissism of school-age girls. (4) The active-restrictive parenting of mothers was the most powerful factor in the overt/covert narcissism of school-age boys and the covert narcissism of school-age girls.

피임과 인공임신중절에 대한 여고생의 지식 및 태도 (Knowledge and Attitude of High School Girls on the Contraception and Induced Abortion)

  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to investigate the knowledge and attitude on the contraception and induced abortion in female high school students for providing the fundamental data in developing a practical sexuality education program for the healthy conception and childbirth in female high school students who are in the child-bearing age. Also, this study provides some foundational data for developing prevention education, counsel, and nursing intervention programs. Methods: Data were collected from 270 high school girls by self-report questionnaires from August 1, to September 31, 2010. Data was analyzed by percentage and Pearson correlation coefficient using SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: The correct rate of contraception and induced abortion were 43.3% and 48.8% respectively. Participants had a moderate attitude toward contraception and a permissive attitude toward induced abortion. Participants who had high score and home sex education were higher correct rate than any other. Conclusion: This study indicates that efforts should be made to provide education on contraception and induced abortion to high school girls to increase awareness. Also, educational programs should be designed to improve knowledge as well as promote a more positive attitude toward contraception and induced abortion.
