  • In this paper, we propose the cogging toque reduction technique of the dual stator radial flux permanent magnet generator. The cogging toque is caused by the torque ripple increase and vibration and noise of the generator. And it is important factor determining cut-in speed of the small wind generator. To reduce cogging torque, permanent magnet displacement was studied. And the theory of the permanent magnet displacement was formulated and the cogging torque reduction according to the permanent magnet displacement was confirmed through the finite element method.

  • Pile foundations that support offshore structures or transmission towers are dominantly subjected to cyclic lateral loads due to wind and waves, causing permanent displacement which can severely affect stability of the structures. In this study, a series of cyclic lateral load tests were conducted on a pre-installed aluminum flexible pile in sandy soil with three different relative densities (40%, 70% and 90%) in order to evaluate the permanent displacement of a cyclic laterally loaded pile. Test results showed that the cyclic lateral loads accumulated the irreversible lateral displacement, so-called permanent displacement. As the number of cyclic lateral load increased, accumulated permanent displacement increased, but the permanent displacement due to one loading cycle gradually decreased. In addition, the permanent displacement of a pile increased with decrement of relative density and decreased by soil saturation. From the test results, the normalized permanent displacement defined as the cumulative permanent displacement to the initial permanent displacement ratio was investigated, and empirical equations for predicting the normalized permanent displacement was developed in terms of relative density of the soil and the number of cyclic lateral load.

  • The purpose of the present study is to analyze the response of pipelines subjected to liquefaction-induced permanent ground displacement and to discuss the failure prediction of domestic waterway pipelines. Initially here, characteristics of liquefaction are reviewed and then permanent ground displacement is investigated base on previous earthquake hazard cases. Next, considering the distribution of the transverse permanent ground displacement and equivalent spring constant effect, formulas obtained by a beam theory are established to analyze continuous pipelines. This analysis was performed without consideration of axial effects. So the finite element analysis was used in order to consider the axial stiffness of soil. As a result, degree of liquefaction, width of deformed ground and axial stiffness are crucial points for evaluation the failure of pipelines subjected to permanent ground displacement.

  • Calculating the seismic displacement of retaining walls has an important role in the optimum design of these structures. Also, studying the effect of surcharge is important for the calculation of active pressure as well as permanent displacements of the wall. In this regard, some researchers have investigated active pressure; but, unfortunately, there are few investigations on the seismic displacement of retaining walls with surcharge. In this research, using limit analysis and upper bound theorem, permanent seismic displacement of retaining walls with surcharge was analyzed for sliding and overturning failure mechanisms. Thus, a new formulation was presented for calculating yield acceleration, critical angle of failure wedge, and permanent displacement of retaining walls with surcharge. Also, effects of surcharge, its location and other factors such as height of the wall and internal friction angle of soil on the amount of seismic displacements were investigated. Finally, designing charts were presented for calculating yield acceleration coefficient and angle of failure wedge.

  • This study was performed to suggest the proper maintenance method for the deteriorated gerber type PC box girder bridge by using the long term displacement monitoring data. For this study, the monitoring system which can measure the long term displacement and the concrete surface temperature was designed and operated. From the measurement and structural analysis results, the cause of the permanent deformation which the bridge has already was estimated, and based on this result, the allowable permanent displacement value at the hinge was suggested. From this study, it was known that the long term monitoring system can be applied to the active maintenance of the deteriorated bridge and the suggested allowable permanent displacement could be used for the maintenance of the bridge.

  • Utilization of fiber beam-column element has gained considerable attention in recent years due mainly to its ability to model distributed plasticity over the length of the element through a number of integration points. However, the relatively high sensitivity of the method to modeling parameters as well as material behavior models can pose a significant challenge. Residual drift is one of the seismic demands which is highly sensitive to modeling parameters and material behavior models. Permanent deformations play a prominent role in the post-earthquake evaluation of serviceability of bridges affected by a near-fault ground shaking. In this research, the influence of distributed plasticity modeling parameters using both force-based and displacement-based fiber elements in the prediction of internal forces obtained from the nonlinear static analysis is studied. Having chosen suitable type and size of elements and number of integration points, the authors take the next step by investigating the influence of material behavioral model employed for the prediction of permanent deformations in the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The result shows that the choice of element type and size, number of integration points, modification of cyclic concrete behavior model and reloading strain of concrete significantly influence the fidelity of fiber element method for the prediction of permanent deformations.

  • The infection of primary teeth occurs by caries or trauma. But, if it is not treated on time, the complication may occur such as enamel hypoplasia, discoloration, impaction, displacement and dilaceration of permanent successors. The periapical lesion on primary tooth could displace the permanent successors in any direction. Treatment options of displaced tooth are observation after extracting the primary teeth, surgical exposure orthodontic traction, transplantation and extraction. In these cases, displacement of permanent central incisor caused by the periapical lesion of primary teeth was observed. The spontaneous eruption after extraction of primary teeth was expected considering degree of displacement, development of root and direction of eruption. This case report shows spontaneous eruption of displaced permanent tooth germ was achieved with periodic examination after extraction of primary teeth.

  • Monopiles, used as one foundation option for offshore wind turbines, are usually subjected to great cyclic lateral loads due to wind and wave. In this study, model pile load tests were performed using calibration chamber and three model piles with different pile lengths in order to investigate the behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles driven into sand. Model test results show that the first loading cycle generates a bigger displacement than the following ones, and the permanent displacement of piles by one loading cycle decreases with increasing the number of cycles. 1-way cyclic loading causes the permanent displacement in the same direction as cyclic loading, whereas 2-way cyclic loading causes the permanent displacement in the reverse direction of initial loading. It is also observed that the permanent displacement of piles due to cyclic lateral loads increases with decreasing relative density of soil and with increasing the magnitude of cyclic loads. However, it is insensitive to the earth pressure ratio of soil and embedded pile length. In addition, based on the model pile load test results, equations for estimation of the permanent lateral displacement and rotation angle of piles due to 1-way cyclic lateral loads are proposed.

  • Permanent deformation plays a key role in performance based earthquake resistant design. In order to estimate permanent deformation after earthquake, it is essential to secure reliable response history analysis(RHA) as well as earthquake scenario. This study focuses on permanent deformation of an inverted T-type wall under earthquake. The study is composed of two separate parts. The first one is on the verification of RHA and the second one is on an effect of input earthquake motion. The former is discussed in companion paper and the latter in this paper. In order to investigate the effect of an input earthquake motion on the permanent deformation, three bins of spectral matched real earthquake records with different magnitude, regions, epicentral distance are constructed. Parametric study was performed using the verified RHA through the companion paper for each earthquake records in the bins. The most influential parameter affecting permanent displacement is magnitude. The other parameters describing earthquake motion are not significant enough to increase permanent displacement of the inverted T-type wall except for energy related parameters(AI, CI, SEI).
