Damage detection has been proven to be a challenging task in structural health monitoring (SHM) due to the fact that damage cannot be measured. The difficulty associated with damage detection is related to electing a feature that is sensitive to damage occurrence and evolution. This difficulty increases as the damage size decreases limiting the ability to detect damage occurrence at the micron and submicron length scale. Damage detection at this length scale is of interest for sensitive structures such as aircrafts and nuclear facilities. In this paper a new photonic sensor based on photonic crystal (PhC) technology that can be synthesized at the nanoscale is introduced. PhCs are synthetic materials that are capable of controlling light propagation by creating a photonic bandgap where light is forbidden to propagate. The interesting feature of PhC is that its photonic signature is strongly tied to its microstructure periodicity. This study demonstrates that when a PhC sensor adhered to polymer substrate experiences micron or submicron damage, it will experience changes in its microstructural periodicity thereby creating a photonic signature that can be related to damage severity. This concept is validated here using a three-dimensional integrated numerical simulation.
The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and the saturation magnetization $B_s$ of (110) $Fe_nCo_n$ heterostructures with n = 1, 2, and 3 are investigated in first-principles within the density functional theory by using the precise full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. We compare the results employing two different exchange correlation potentials, that is, the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and include the spin-orbit coupling interaction of the valence states in the second variational way. The MAE is found to be enhanced significantly compared to those of bulk Fe and Co and the magnetic easy axis is in-plane in agreement with experiment. Also the MAE exhibits the in-plane angle dependence with a two-fold anisotropy showing that the $[1{\overline{I}}0]$ direction is the most favored spin direction. We found that as the periodicity increases, (i) the saturation magnetization $B_s$ decreases due to the reduced magnetic moment of Fe far from the interface, (ii) the strength of in-plane preference of spin direction increases yielding enhancement of MAE, and (iii) the volume anisotropy coefficient decreases because the volume increase outdo the MAE enhancement.

Power converters produce a vast range of harmonics, subharmonics and interharmonics. Harmonics analyzing tools based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) assume that only harmonics are present and the periodicity intervals are fixed, while these periodicity intervals are variable and long in the presence of interharmonics. Using FFT may lead to invalid and undesired results due to the above mentioned issues. They can also lead to problems such as frequency blending, spectral leakage and the picket-fence effect. In this paper, the group-harmonic weighting (GHW) approach has been presented to identify the interharmonics in a power system. Afterwards, a modified GHW has been introduced to calculate the proper bandwidth for analyzing the various values of interharmonics. Modifying this method leads to more precise results in the FFT of a waveform containing inter harmonics especially in power systems with a fundamental frequency drift or frequency interference. Numerical simulations have been performed to prove the efficiency of the presented algorithm in interharmonics detection and to increase the accuracy of the FFT and the GWH methods.
The stochastic analysis was carried out to the hourly time series observed at Dae-gu, Wha-Myung and Ku-Mee in order to see water quality variation of the Nack-Dong River during Three months (July, Aug. and Sept.) in each year of 1979 and 1981. As a result of this study, it was found that 1. The simple correlation coefficients between some of the variables were fairly high. For example, the coefficients between Do and WT. were -0.824 (Dae-gu), -0.547 (Wha-myung), and -0.911(Ku-mee). The coefficients between COND and DO. were -0.263(Dae-gu), -0.347(Wha-myung) and -0.881 (Ku-mee). The coefficients between COND and WT. were 0.531 (Dae-gu), 0.361 (Wha-myung) and 0.800 (Ku-mee). 2. Hourly water quality time series of WT and DO existed as dominant 24 hours Periodicity For example, the Aut correlation coefficients about WT were 0.960 (K=1), 0.846(K=24), 0.691(K=48), 0.596(K=72), and 0.453(K=96). The auto-correlation coefficients of Do were 0.968 (K=1), 0.591 (K=24), 0.393 (K=48), 0.349 (K=72) and 0.250 (K=96). 3. Weekly water quality time series of WT and Do varied with the dominant 24 hours periodicity.
A series of manganite-based superlattices composed of half-metallic $La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}MnO_3/LaMnO_3$ and insulating LaMnO$_3$ stacking layers were fabricated by employing pulsed laser deposition method. The dc resistivity increased drastically by simply reducing the stacking periodicity. The resistivity enhancement was accompanied by a gradual decrease in the temperature (T$_c$) of the Metal-to-Insulator Transition (MIT). This observation was interpreted as a small decrease in the effective metallic fraction near the percolation threshold. For the stacking periodicity less than a certain critical value, there appeared another transition to an insulating state at temperatures far below T$_c$. This low-temperature transition seems to be closely related to the AF-type (C-type) orbital ordering in newly formed insulating domains.
We obtained the chemical shifts of amide protons (NHs) in helical peptides at various temperatures and trifluoroethanol (TFE) concentrations using 2-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. These NH chemical shifts and their temperature dependence exhibited characteristic periodicity of 3-4 residues per cycle along the helix, where downfield shifted NHs showed larger temperature dependence. In an attempt to understand these observations, we focused on hydrogen bonding changes in the peptides and examined the validity of two possible explanations: (1) changes in intermolecular hydrogen bonding caused by differential solvation of backbone carbonyl groups by TFE, and (2) changes in intramolecular hydrogen bonding due to disproportionate variations in the hydrogen bonding within the peptide helix. Interestingly, the slowly exchanging NHs, which were on the hydrophobic side of the helix, showed consistently larger temperature dependences. This could not be explained by the differential solvation assumption, because the slowly exchanging NHs would become more labile if the preceding carbonyl groups were preferentially solvated by TFE. We suggest that the disproportionate changes in intramolecular hydrogen bonding better explain both the temperature dependence and the exchange behavior observed in this study.
Forecasting of coming fire accidents is quite a challenging problem cause normally fire accidents occur for a variety of reasons and seem randomness. However, if fire accidents that cause critical losses can be forecasted, it can expect to minimize losses through preemptive action. Classifications using machine learning were determined as appropriate classification criteria for the forecasting cause it classified as a constant damage scale and proportion. In addition, the analysis of the periodicity of a critical fire accident showed a certain pattern, but showed a high deviation. So it seems possible to forecast critical fire accidents using advanced prediction techniques rather than simple prediction techniques.
Irregular temporal sampling is a common feature of geophysical and biological time series in remote sensing. This study proposes an on-line system for reconstructing observation image series contaminated by noises resulted from mechanical problems or sensing environmental condition. There is also a high likelihood that during the data acquisition periods the target site corresponding to any given pixel may be covered by fog or cloud, thereby resulting in bad or missing observation. The surface parameters associated with the land are usually dependent on the climate, and many physical processes that are displayed in the image sensed from the land then exhibit temporal variation with seasonal periodicity. A feedback system proposed in this study reconstructs a sequence of images remotely sensed from the land surface having the physical processes with seasonal periodicity. The harmonic model is used to track seasonal variation through time, and a Gibbs random field (GRF) is used to represent the spatial dependency of digital image processes. The experimental results of this simulation study show the potentiality of the proposed system to reconstruct the image series observed by imperfect sensing technology from the environment which are frequently influenced by bad weather. This study provides fundamental information on the elements of the proposed system for right usage in application.
One dimensional (1D) grating has been fabricated (using focused ion beam) on 50 nm gold (Au) film deposited on higher refractive index Gallium phosphate (GaP) substrate. The sub-wavelength periodic metal nano structuring enable to couple photon to couple with the surface plasmons (SPs) excited by them. These grating devices provide the efficient control on the SPs which propagate on the interface of noble metal and dielectric whose frequency is dependent on the bulk electron plasma frequency of the metal. For a fixed periodicity (${\Lambda}=700 nm$) and slit width (w = 100 nm) in the grating device, the efficiency of SPP excitation is about 40% compared to the transmission in the near-field. Efficient coupling of SPs with photon in dielectric provide field localisation on sub-wavelength scale which is needed in Heat Assisted Magnetic recording (HAMR) systems. The GaP is also used to emulate Vertical Cavity Surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in order to provide cheaper alternative of light source being used in HAMR technology. In order to understand the underlying physics, far-and near-field results has been compared with the modelling results which are obtained using COMSOL RF module. Apart from this, grating devices of smaller periodicity (${\Lambda}=280nm$) and slit width (w = 22 nm) has been fabricated on GaP substrate which is photoluminescence material to observe amplified spontaneous emission of the SPs at wavelength of 805 nm when the grating device was excited with 532 nm laser light. This observation is unique and can have direct application in light emitting diodes (LEDs).
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the option selection and optimal trading of informed traders in KOSPI 200 options market based on the PIN (probability of informed trading) model of Easley et al.(2002). Design/methodology/approach - This study uses TAQ (trade and quote) data provided by Korean Exchanges (KRX) which contains all the bids and trades recorded during the continuous auction trading hours for the KOSPI 200 options between May 2019 and September 2020. Findings - First, there was no difference in the PIN between call and put options in the 2019 data, but the PIN of put options was slightly higher in 2020. Second, regardless of the type of option, the PIN was higher for in-the-money (ITM) options, and the PIN of out-of-the-money (OTM) options was the same as or slightly higher than that of at-the-money (ATM) options. Third, we found that the PIN decreases as trading liquidity increases, and fourth, the PIN increased sharply as the expiration date approached, especially for OTM options, while ITM and ATM options showed relatively weak effects. Fifth, for foreign and institutional investors, the periodicity of orders was observed in milliseconds, especially for foreign investors, where the periodicity of orders was clear and frequent in OTM options. The results suggest that the purpose of option trading varies depending on the moneyness from the perspective of the informed trader.
