Power Characteristics of cw Second-harmonic Generation in Periodically Poled LiNbO3

  • We verified through a noncritical phase-matched second-harmonic generation experiment that the periodically-poled $LiNbO_3$ (PPLN) had a large effective nonlinear optical coefficient, demonstrating that the QPM grating was uniform throughout the entire length of PPLN. The quasi-phase matching temperature was $193.4^{\circ}C$. The maximum SHG output power at the fundamental power of 2.0 W was found to be 18.0 mW; generated second-harmonic beam was found to have no photorefractive effect.

Chromatic Dispersion Compensation via Mid-span Spectral Inversion with Periodically Poled $LiNbO_3$ Wavelength Converter at Low Pump Power

  • Mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) has to utilize high optical pump power, for its operation principle is based on a nonlinear optical wavelength conversion. In this paper, a low pump-power operation of MSSI-based chromatic dispersion compensation (CDC) has been achieved successfully, for the first time to our knowledge, by introducing a noise pre-reduction scheme in cascaded wavelength conversions with periodically poled $LiNbO_3$ waveguides at a relatively low operation temperature. As preliminary studies, phase-matching properties and operation-temperature dependence of the wavelength converter (WC) were characterized. The WC pumped at 1549 nm exhibited a wide conversion bandwidth of 59 nm covering the entire C-band and a conversion efficiency of -23.6 dB at 11 dBm pump power. CDC experiments were implemented with 2.5 and 10 Gb/s transmission systems over 100 km single-mode fiber. Although it is well-known that the signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion is not critical at a 2.5 Gb/s transmission, the clear recovery of eye patterns was identified. At 10 Gb/s transmission experiments, eye patterns were retrieved distinctly from seriously distorted ones, and notable improvements in bit-error rates were acquired at a low pump power of 14 dBm.

  • Quasi-Phase-Matching(QPM)을 이용한 Optical Parametric Oscillation(OPO)은 높은 효율과 작은 Walk-off 효과를 보인다는 장점을 가지고 있다. 그러나 작은 펌프빛의 크기로 인한 빛세기의 증가는 optical damage와 photorefractive effect 야기하고, 이러한 요인으로 안정적인 고출력 연속발진에 있어서는 그 한계가 있으리라고 생각되어진다. 본 연구에서는 주기가 27.7 $mu extrm{m}$인 Periodically poled LiNbO$_3$(PPLN)을 비선형매질로 이용하여 10 kHz의 고반복률을 갖는 다이오드 펌프 Nd:YAG 레이저에서의 Quasi-Phase-Matched Optical Parametric Oscillation의 Signal파의 출력특성 및 안정화에 대하여 조사를 하였다. Domain formation and expansion during periodic poling of congruent $LiNbO_3$ using external field (조화용융조성 $LiNbO_3$의 주기적 분극 반전 동안 도메인 생성 및 이동에 관한 연구)

  • When external field was applied to congruent $LiNbO_3$, it was investgated for domain formation and expansion of $LiNbO_3$. The domain wall velocities of 0.5 mm thickness $LiNbO_3$ were 28.70, 16.02 and $5.75{\mu}m/sec$ under poling field of 23.5, 22.0 and 21.0 kV/mm, respectively. As $1 M{\Omega}$ resistor was used in domain inversion system, harmonic domain inversion was not achieved by rapid domain expansion. And 50% duty cycle periodically poled $LiNbO_3$ have been fabricated by charge control using $10 M{\Omega}$ resistor.

  • Quasi-phase-matched (QPM) second harmonic generation (SHG) waveguide devices for a green light generation were fabricated by a periodically patterned electrode on the +Z crystal surface and homogeneous LiCl solution using a 5 mol% MgO doped congruent z-cut lithium niobate crystals. Using selective chemical etching, we confirmed the periodic (${\sim}6.8{\mu}m$) domain inverted structure and measured SHG properties of fabricated periodically poled MgO : $LiNbO_3$ ridge-type waveguides.
