The examination on the operating mechanism of a pulsating heat pipe (PHP) using visualization revealed that the working fluid in the PHP oscillated to the axial direction by the contraction and expansion of vapor plugs. This contraction and expansion is due to the formation and extinction of bubbles in the evaporating and condensing section, respectively. In this paper, a theoretical model of PHP was presented. The theoretical model was based on the separated flow model with two liquid slugs and three vapor plugs. The results show that the diameter, surface tension and charge ratio of working fluid have significant effects on the performance of the PHP. The following conclusions were obtained. The periodic oscillations of liquid slugs and vapor plugs were obtained under specified parameters. When the hydraulic diameter of the PHP was increased to d=3mm, the frequency of oscillation decreased. By increasing the charging ratio from 40 to 60 by volume ratio, the pressure difference between the evaporating section and condensing section increased, the amplitude of oscillation reduced, and the oscillation frequency decreased. The working fluid with higher surface tension resulted in an increase in the amplitude and frequency of oscillation. Also the average temperature of vapor plugs decreased.

Flame oscillation phenomena in a co-flow diffusion flame was experimentally studied with periodic fuel supply using a solenoid valve. The degree of excitation was controlled by changing the volume flux of fuel passing through the valve. Flame oscillation frequencies were measured utilizing a photodiode, a spectrum analyzer, video and high speed movies. Laser planar visualization was employed to study the correlation between the flame oscillation and the toroidal vortices. Observed are three regimes of flame oscillation, where the oscillation frequencies are for the multiples of excitation, the excitation itself and the flame natural oscillation. Both periods of natural oscillation and of excitation induced oscillation exist over one cycle of the excitation in the frequency multiplied regime. It is considered as an effect of balancing the influence of buoyancy driven vortex with that of excitation induced vortex near the excitation rate of 0.2. Flame shapes are become monotonous as increasing the excitation frequency to the range of over two fold of the natural oscillation. The flame oscillation can be modulated to the frequency of either multiples of excitation or excitation itself under certain conditions. This implies that the flame oscillation could be modulated to avoid the resonance frequency of the combustor, and shows the possibility of active control of the flame oscillation.
Oscillating airfoil haw been challenged for the dynamic stalls of airfoil am wind turbines at high angle of attach. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance am safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed for the oscillating airfoil at high angle of attack around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.2 and Reynolds number of $1.2{\times}10^4$. The lift, drag, pressure distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the pitching oscillation. Unsteady velocity field, periodic vortex shedding, the unsteady pressure distribution, and the acoustic fields are analyzed. The effects of these unsteady characteristics in the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed.

The time-dependent behavior of unsteady condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) work. The two-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, fully coupled with the condensate droplet growth equations, are numerically solved by a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme, with a second-order fractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. The predicted results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a diaphragm downstream. The present computations represent the experimental flows well. The time-dependent unsteady condensation characteristics are discussed based upon the present predicted results. The results obtained clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to unsteady condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity and it results from the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave.

A numerical analysis is performed using two dimensional axisymmetric RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations system on the transition sequence of the Integrated Rocket Ramjet and the unsteady reacting flow-field in a ramjet combustor during unstable combustion. The mode transition of an axisymmetric ramjet is numerically simulated starting from the initial condition of the boost end phase of the entire ramjet. The unsteady reacting flow-field within combustor is computed for varying injection area. In calculation results of the transition, the terminal normal shock is occurred at the downstream of diffuser throat section and no notable combustor pressure oscillation is observed after certain time of the inlet port cover open. For the case of a small injection area at the same equivalence ratio, periodic pressure oscillation in the combustor leads to the terminal shock expulsion from the inlet and hence the buzz instability occurred.
The time-dependent behavior of nonequilibrium condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated with a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method. The computational results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a downstream diaphragm. The results clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to nonequilibrium condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity, and the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave are responsible for the total pressure loss.

The incompressible viscous flow past a sphere under forced oscillation is numerically investigated at a Reynolds number of 300. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the sphere oscillating vertically to the streamwise direction. There are two important variables to characterize the oscillating state of a sphere. One is an oscillating amplitude normalized by the sphere diameter is set as a fixed number of 0.2. Another is the frequency ratio which is defined by $f_e/f_o$, where fe and fo are the excited frequency and the natural frequency of vortex shedding for the stationary sphere. In this study, three different frequency ratios of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 are considered. The results show a periodic flow with hairpin vortices shedding from upper and lower positions as well as vortical legs obliquely extended by oscillating motion of sphere. The enveloping vortical structure experience rupture twice in one period of oscillation. As the frequency of oscillation is increased, the vortical legs are getting shorter and eventually the hairpin vortices are much closer to the adjacent one.

In the present article, we investigate numerically turbulent flow of air through compound rectangular channels. Large eddy simulation(LES) is employed for unsteady turbulence modeling. LES gives better predictions for the axial mean velocity distribution than those of other turbulent models. Strong large-scale quasi-periodic flow oscillations are observed in most of the geometries investigated. Such large-scale flow oscillations in compound rectangular channels are similar to the quasi-periodic flow pulsation through the gaps between fuel rod bundle in nuclear reactor. It exists in any longitudinal connecting gap between two flow channels. The frequency of this flow oscillation is determined by the geometry of the gap. The large scale cross motions through the rectangular compound channels induce significant heat transfer enhancement of the compound channel flow.

The interaction between wall blowing and oxidizer flow can generate a very complicated flow characteristics in combustion chamber of hybrid rockets. LES analysis was conducted with an in-house CFD code to investigate the features of turbulent flow without chemical reactions. The numerical results reveal that the flow oscillations at a certain frequency exists on the fuel surface, which is analogous to those observed in the solid propellant combustion. However, the observation of oscillating flow at a certain frequency is only limited to a very thin layer adjacent to wall surface and the strength of the oscillation is not strong enough to induce the drastic change in temperature gradient on the surface. The visualization of fluctuating pressure components shows the periodic appearance of relatively high and low pressure regions along the axial direction. This subsequently results in the oscillation of flow at a certain fixed frequency. This implies that the resonance phenomenon would be possible if the external disturbances such as acoustic excitation could be imposed to the oscillating flow in the combustion chamber.
An edgetone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer, impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper, 2-dimensional edgetone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle is presented using lattice Boltmznan model with 21 bits, which is introduced a flexible specific heat ratio y to simulate diatomic gases like air. The blown jet is given a parabolic inflow profile for the velocity, and the edges consist of wedges with angle 20 degree (for symmetric wedge) and 23 degree (for inclined wedge), respectively. At a stand-off distance w, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and to propagate towards the downward. Present results presented have shown in capturing small pressure fluctuating resulting from periodic oscillation of the jet around the edge. The pressure fluctuations propagate with the speed of sound. Their interaction with the wedge produces an irrotational feedback field which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow producing the singularities at the nozzle lips. It is found that, as the numerical example, satisfactory simulation results on the edgetone can be obtained for the complex flow-edge interaction mechanism, demonstrating the capability of the lattice Boltzmann model with flexible specific heat ratio to predict flow-induced noises in the ventilating systems of ship.
