  • In this paper, an inverse problem of glass forming process is studied to determine a number of unknown heat transfer coefficients which are imposed as boundary conditions. An analysis program for transient heat conduction of axi-symmetric dimension is developed to simulate the forming and cooling process. The analysis is repeated until it attains periodic state, which requires at least 30 cycles of iteration. Measurements are made for the temperatures at several available time and positions of glass and moulds in operation. Heat removal by the cooling water from the plunger is also recorded. An optimization problem is formulated to determine heat transfer coefficients which minimize the difference between the measured data and analysis results. Significant time savings are achieved in finite difference based sensitivity computation during the optimization by employing distributed computing technique. The analysis results by the optimum heat transfer coefficients are found to agree well with the measured data.

  • To investigate the supercavity geometry and gas flow structure for the supercavities with two closure types under the different flow conditions, an inhomogeneous multiphase model with the SST turbulence model was established, and validated by experimental results. The results show that two distinct regions exist inside the supercavity, which include the downstream flow region along the gas-water interface and the reverse flow region. For the twin-vortex supercavity, the internal gas leaks from the supercavity boundary by two paths: the supercavity surface and the two-vortex tubes. Increasing Froude number leads to more internal gas stripped from the supercavity surface. Two types of gas loss exist for the re-entrant jet supercavity with high Froude number, one type is the steady process of gas loss, and the major gas-leaking path is the supercavity surface rather than supercavity closure region. The other type is the unsteady periodic ejection, and the gas cluster of periodic ejection is merely a small part of the gas stored inside the supercavity.

  • In this paper, the equivalent elastic properties of fiber reinforced plastic laminar are investigated using various homogenization schemes. Although there are several methods for predicting the equivalent elastic properties such as analytical formula or semi-empirical formula, most of them have some limitations or are not much accurate when handling new composite material consisting of various fiber, matrix and fiber-volume fraction ratio. To resolve the issues, computational homogenization scheme is adopted with a representative volume element (RVE) comprised of a set of finite elements. Finally, the equivalent elastic properties are obtained by applying periodic boundary conditions. The obtained results are compared with those by the existing methods and test results. Also its effect on structural analysis results of the composite satellite panel is investigated.

  • This paper studied the mechanical characteristics of boom structures by verifying the modeling method of representing unit cells of triaxial woven fabric (TWF) composites. The modeling of the representative unit cell obtained the ABD matrix by analysing the behaviour of tensile, shear, bending, and torsion using the periodic boundary conditions for the beam element. This study aimed to validate the ABD matrix by comparing the tensile analysis output from a finite element program with the experimental results from an MTS 810 machine. Additionally, the mechanical characteristics of a TWF composite boom structure were determined through bending analysis and experiments. The findings of this research are expected to be beneficial for developing structures using TWF composites.

  • This paper describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows with free-surface. The Navier-Stokes equations governing the flows have been discretized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via the SIMPLE-C algorithm. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and the interface behaviour was investigated by means of a "Lagrangian" technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The use of this bulk-continuity relation allows the hydrodynamic variables to be computed over the entire flow domain including both liquid and gas regions. Thus, the free-surface boundary conditions are imposed implicitly and the problem formulation is greatly simplified. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.

  • In this paper, thermal conductivities of carbon-phenolic 8-harness satin weave composite, ACP302, were measured and predicted. In the analysis, the satin weave unit cell was identified and modeled discretely by 3-dimensional finite elements, considering the interlaced fiber tow architecture microscopically. At the unit cell boundary, the corresponding periodic boundary conditions were applied. The results were analyzed to investigate the effect of microstructural parameters such as stacking phase shifts, waviness ratio, and fiber volume fraction. The conductivities were also obtained by experiments and compared with the numerical results.

  • The phase field model is becoming the model of choice for the theoretical study of the morphologies of crystals growth from the melt. This model provides an alternative approach to the solution of the classical (sharp interface) model of solidification by introducing a new variable, the phase field, Ø, to identify the phase. The variable Ø takes on constant values in the bulk phases and makes a continuous transition between these values over a thin transition layer that plays the role of the classically sharp interface. This results in Ø being governed by a new partial differential equation(in addition to the PDE's that govern the classical fields, such as temperature and composition) that guarantees (in the asymptotic limit of a suitably thin transition layer) that the appropriate boundary conditions at the crystal-melt interface are satisfied. Thus, one can proceed to solve coupled PDE's without the necessity of explicitly tracking the interface (free boundary) that would be necessary to solve the classical (sharp interface) model. Recent advances in supercomputing and algorithms now enable generation of interesting and valuable results that display most of the fundamental solidification phenomena and processes that are observed experimentally. These include morphological instability, solute trapping, cellular growth, dendritic growth (with anisotropic sidebranching, tip splitting, and coupling to periodic forcing), coarsening, recalescence, eutectic growth, faceting, and texture development. This talk will focus on the fundamental basis of the phase field model in terms of irreversible thermodynamics as well as it computational limitations and prognosis for future improvement. • Periodic pulsations in the static pressure near turbine surfaces as blade rows move relative to each other is one of the important sources of turbine unsteadiness. The present experiment aims to investigate the effect of the static pressure pulsations on the interaction of film coolant flows from two rows of staggered holes with mainstream and its effect on film cooling heat transfer. Potential flow pulsations are generated by the rotating shutter mechanism installed downstream of the test section, The free-stream Strouhal number based on the boundary layer thickness is in the range of 0.033 - 0.33, and the amplitude of about 10-20%. Measured are time-averaged and phase-averaged velocity variations, pressure variations and temperature distributions of the flow field. Experimental conditions are identified by boundary layer measurements. Injectant behavior is characterized by the measurements of unsteady pressure in the plenum chamber and free-stream static pressure. The film cooling effectiveness is evaluated from the insulated wall temperature measurement. It has been found that bulk flow pulsation provides very large diffusion of the injectants and the effectiveness is significantly reduced by the flow pulsations.

  • The leaky wave emanated from the dielectric-coated parallel-plate waveguide with finite periodic thick slot in its upper plate is investigated theoretically for H-polarization case. For this structure, fields in slot regions are expressed as a summation of the parallel-plate waveguide TM modes, and in other regions are expressed in the spectral domain by use of the inverse Fourier transform. Boundary conditions at the interfaces are enforced, and the simultaneous linear equations are derived. The influences of the slot width, slot thickness, thickness of a dielectric coating, and finite slot number on the radiation characteristics (phase constant, leakage constant, radiation pattern) are examined. The results of the finite periodic slot are compared with those of the infinite extent structure and good agreement has been found.

  • We consider the poisson equation where the functions involved are periodic including the solution function. Let $R=[0,1]{\times}[0,l]{\times}[0,1]$ be the region of interest and let $\phi$(x,y,z) be an arbitrary periodic function defined in the region R such that $\phi$(x,y,z) satisfies $\phi$(x+1, y, z)=$\phi$(x, y+1, z)=$\phi$(x, y, z+1)=$\phi$(x,y,z) for all x,y,z. We describe a very simple method for solving the equation ${\nabla}^2u(x, y, z)$ = $\phi$(x, y, z) based on the cubic spline interpolation of u(x, y, z); using the requirement that each interval [0,1] is a multiple of the period in the corresponding coordinates, the Laplacian operator applied to the cubic spline interpolation of u(x, y, z) can be replaced by a square matrix. The solution can then be computed simply by multiplying $\phi$(x, y, z) by the inverse of this matrix. A description on how the storage of nearly a Giga byte for $20{\times}20{\times}20$ nodes, equivalent to a $8000{\times}8000$ matrix is handled by using the fuzzy rule table method and a description on how the shape preserving property of the Laplacian operator will be affected by this approximation are included.
