Video-on-Demand services are increasing rapidly nowadays. The load on servers can be very high, even exceeding their capacity. For popular contents, we can use a Periodic Broadcast (PB) strategy using multicast to serve all clients. Recent development of PB uses multiple channels broadcasting for segments of movies in certain patterns, so that users only need to wait for a small segment to start the service. However, users need higher download capacity to download multiple segments at a time. In order to compensate for this, a proxy server can help to reduce download bandwidth requirements by holding some segments for a certain time. This research will focus on more recent PB schemes that couldn't be covered by previous Proxy-Assisted Periodic Broadcast strategies.
In recent years, different models in data delivery have been explored in mobile computing systems. Particularly, there were a lot of research efforts in the periodic push model where the server repetitively disseminates information without explicit request. However, average waiting time per data operation highly depends on the length of a broadcast cycle and different access pattern among clients may deteriorate the response time considerably. In this case, clients are preferably willing to send a data request to the server explicitly through backchannel in order to obtain optimal response time. We call the broadcast model supporting backchannel as hybrid broadcast. In this paper, we devise a new transaction processing algorithm(O-PreH) in hybrid broadcast environments. The data objects which the server maintains are divided into Push_Data for periodic broadcasting and Pull_Data for on-demand processing. Clients tune in broadcast channel or demand the data of interests according to the data type. Periodic invalidation reports from the server support maintaining transactional consistency. If one or more conflicts are found, conflict orders are determined not to violate the consistency(pre-reordering) and then the remaining operations have to be executed pessimistically. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate the improved throughput of the proposed algorithm.
To provide on-demand video streaming services through the network, video objects with both high and low client request rates should be served efficiently. In this paper, we propose a dynamic on-demand streaming approach for providing services efficiently regardless of the client request rate. This approach can maintain QoS by transitioning the service scheme according to the request rate. The server provides services by the Heuristic broadcasting approach when the client request rate is low and by Striping broadcast, one of many Periodic broadcast approaches, when the client request rate is high. The server knows the variations of client request rates by the number of service channels and decides the transition to more efficient service schemes on its own. We simulated this scheme transition with various client request intervals and traces from a company providing streaming services. The results show that the performance of our approach is reasonable.
For recent years, data broadcast technology has been recognized as a very effective data delivery mechanism in mobile computing environment with a large number of cli;ents. Especially, a hybrid broadcast algorithm in real-time environment, which integrates one-way broadcast and on-demand broadcast, has an advantage of adapting the requests of clients to a limited up-link bandwidth and following the change of data access pattern. However, previous hybrid broadcasting algorithms has a problem in the methods to get a grip on the change of data access Pattern. It is caused by the diminution of requests for the data items which are contained in periodic broadcasting schedule because they are already broadcasted. To solve this problem, existing researches may remove data items in periodic broadcasting schedule over a few cycles multiplying cooling factor or find out the requests of data items with extracting them on purpose. Both of them are the artificial methods not considering the property of data. In this paper, we propose a real-time adaptive hybrid broadcasting based on data type(RTAHB-DT) to broadcast considering data property and analysis the performance of our aigorithm through simulation study.

Wireless network technologies are becoming more widely used in industrial environment. The industrial communication system requires a real-time delivery of messages. The sensors periodically senses the physical environment and wants to deliver the data in real-time to the sink. This paper proposes a real-time protocol for periodic messages on wireless sensor and actor networks to be used in industrial communications. The proposed protocol delivers the data message using the shortest path from the source and the nearest actor. The protocol considers the energy consumption by reducing the number of broadcast messages during flooding. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed protocol using QualNet simulator. The simulation results show that the data messages have been delivered in real-time and the number of broadcast messages is reduced from 90% to 35% compared the existing protocols.

With the extension of wireless technology, vehicular ad hoc networks provide important services for the dissemination of general data and emergency warnings. However, since, the vehicle topology frequently changes from a dense to a sparse network depending on the speed of the moving vehicles and the time of day, vehicular ad hoc networks require a protocol that can facilitate the efficient and reliable dissemination of emergency messages in a highly mobile environment under dense or intermittent vehicular connectivity. Therefore, this paper proposes a new vehicular broadcast protocol, called BL-CAST, that can operate effectively in both dense and sparse network scenarios. As a low overhead multi-hop broadcast protocol, BL-CAST does not rely on the periodic exchange of beacons for updating location information. Instead, the location information of a vehicle is included in a broadcast message to identify the last rebroadcasting vehicle in an intermittently connected network. Simulation results show that BL-CAST outperforms the DV-CAST protocol in terms of the end-to-end delay, message delivery ratio and network overhead.
We propose a hybrid broadcast scheduling based on a combination of periodic and on-demand data scheduling methods for mobile data broadcasting in convergence networks from communication and broadcasting. We consider an environment in which the forward channel is for data broadcasting and the reverse channel is for sending data requests via cellular phones, WLAN, WiBro, etc. Collecting statistics of requests from clients, the server partitions the data items into hot-item and cold-item sets. Hot items are sent based on a push-based scheduling. An on-demand scheduling method is applied to cold items. Performance evaluation from simulations shows that our proposed scheduling algorithm yields small response time with high successful response ratio.

Due to the redundant rebroadcast packets, network-wide broadcasting is a costly operation in wireless mobile ad hoc networks. To reduce this redundancy, most of previous approaches implicitly or explicitly require periodic refreshing of neighborhood information which continuously imposes additional broadcast overheads. In this paper, we propose a practical broadcast pruning scheme based on the local prediction of a remained coverage area. As the proposed scheme uses only information available in the on-going broadcast process, it can minimize the overheads prevalent in previous approaches.

Video on Demand (VOD) is a multimedia service which allows a remote user to select and then view video at his convenience at any time he wants, which makes the VOD become an important technology for many applications. Numerous periodic VOD broadcasting protocols have been proposed to support a large number of receivers. Broadcasting is an efficient transmission scheme to provide on-demand service for very popular movies. This paper proposes a new broadcasting scheme called Popularity Cushion Staggered Broadcasting (PCSB). The proposed scheme improves the Periodic Broadcasting (PB) protocols in the latest mobile VOD system, which is called MobiVoD system. It also, reduces the maximum waiting time of the mobile node, by partitioning the $1^{st}$ segment of the whole video and storing it in the Local Media Forwarder (LMF) exactly in the Pool of RAM (PoR), and then transmitting them when the mobile nodes miss the $1^{st}$ broadcasted segment. The results show that the PCSB is more efficient and better than the all types of broadcasting and caching techniques in the MobiVoD system. Furthermore, these results exhibits that system performance is stable under high dynamics of the system and the viewer's waiting time are less than the previous system.
