A Study on the Comparison of Approximation Models for Multi-Objective Design Optimization of a Tire (타이어 다목적 최적설계를 위한 근사모델 생성에 관한 연구)

  • Tire's performance plays important roles in improving vehicle's performances. Tire makers carry out a lot of research to improve tire's performance. They are making effort to meet multi purposes using various optimization methods. Recently, the tire makers perform the shape optimization using approximation models, which are surrogate models obtained by statistical method. Generally, the reason why we increase sampling points during optimization process, is to get more reliable approximation models, but the more we adopt sampling points, the more we need time to test. So it is important to select approximation model and proper number of sampling points to balance between reliability and time consuming. In this research, we studied to compare two kind cases for a approximation construction. First, we compare RSM and Kriging which are Curve Fitting Method and Interpolation Method, respectively. Second, we construct approximation models using three different number of sampling points. And then, we recommend proper approximation model and orthogonal array adopt tire's design optimization.

  • The missile control system is comprised of various control systems such as autopilot, guidance law, and homing filter and so on. To design these guidance and control system, the optimization technique is widely applied at each developing stage. However, this kind of optimization requires lots of time and cost and moreover, this approach does not give an overall system optimization result. In this paper, to use the optimization tool for control system design, the optimal problem formulation is done and the performance index and constraints are considered. And finally the systematically optimized method is proposed.

A Study on the Ram Accelerator Performance Improvement Using Numerical Optimization Techniques (수치 최적화 기법을 이용한 램 가속기 성능 향상 연구)

  • Numerical design optimization techniques are implemented for the improvement of the ram accelerator performance. The design object is to find the minimum ram tube length required to accelerate projectile from initial velocity $V_0$ to target velocity $V_e$. The premixture is composed of $H_2,\;O_2,\;N_2$ and the mole numbers of these species are selected as design variables. The objective function and the constraints are linearized during the optimization process and gradient-based Simplex method and SLP(Sequential Linear Programming) have been employed. With the assumption of two dimensional inviscid flow for internal flow field, the analyses of the nonequilibrium chemical reactions for 8 steps 7 species lave been performed. To determined the tube length, ram tube internal flow field is assumed to be in a quasi-steady state and the flow velocity is divided into several subregions with equal interval. Hence the thrust coefficients and accelerations for corresponding subregions are obtained and integrated for the whole velocity region. With the proposed design optimization techniques, the total ram tube length had been reduced $19\%$ within 7 design iterations. This optimization procedure can be directly applied to the multi-stage, multi-premixture ram accelerator design optimization problems.

Topology optimization on vortex-type passive fluidic diode for advanced nuclear reactors

  • The vortex-type fluidic diode (FD) is a key safety component for inherent safety in various advanced reactors such as the sodium fast reactor (SFR) and the molten salt reactor (MSR). In this study, topology optimization is conducted to optimize the design of the vortex-type fluidic diode. The optimization domain is simplified to 2-dimensional geometry for a tangential port and chamber. As a result, a design with a circular chamber and a restrictor at the tangential port is obtained. To verify the new design, experimental study and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis were conducted for inlet Reynolds numbers between 2000 and 6000. However, the results show that the performance of the new design is no better than the original reference design. To analyze the cause of this result, detailed analysis is performed on the velocity and pressure field using flow visualization experiments and 3-D CFD analysis. The results show that the discrepancy between the optimization results in 2-D and the experimental results in 3-D originated from exclusion of an important pressure loss contributor in the optimization process. This study also concludes that the junction design of the axial port and chamber offers potential for improvement of fluidic diode performance.

  • This paper discusses the design parameter sensitivity analysis and multi-objective function optimization for improving the impact performance of an auto-sensing breaker based on the analytical model of the same, which secured reliability in a previous research. The study aims to improve both impact power and stability by complementing the existing research that only improved the impact power. The study sequence is as follows: first, the analysis scenarios for the accurate sensitivity analysis and optimization are set up. Second, the sensitivity of the design parameter of the auto-sensing breaker is analyzed, and the variables with high sensitivity are extracted. Third, the extracted variables are used to optimize the multi-objective functions, and the optimized performance is compared with the initial performance to see how the impact performance on the existing auto-sensing breaker has improved. This study is based on domestic technology, and will allow the development of products with a better blowing performance than their existing overseas counterparts.

  • Based on classical Berotti discrete iron loss calculation model, the iron loss analysis mathematical model of alternator was proposed in this paper. Considering characteristics of high speed and changing frequency of the alternator, Maxwell 3-D model was built to analyze iron loss corresponding to each running speed in alternator. Based on iron loss model of alternator at rated speed, the rotor claw pole size was made an optimization design. The optimization results showed that alternator's output performance had been improved. A new idea was explored in size optimization design of claw pole alternator.

Application of Surrogate Modeling to Design of A Compressor Blade to Optimize Stacking and Thickness

  • Surrogate modeling is applied to a compressor blade shape optimization to modify its stacking line and thickness to enhance adiabatic efficiency and total pressure ratio. Six design variables are defined by parametric curves and three objectives; efficiency, total pressure and a combined objective of efficiency and total pressure are considered to enhance the performance of compressor blade. Latin hypercube sampling of design of experiments is used to generate 55 designs within design space constituted by the lower and upper limits of variables. Optimum designs are found by formulating a PRESS (predicted error sum of squares) based averaging (PBA) surrogate model with the help of a gradient based optimization algorithm. The optimum designs using the current variables show that, to optimize the performance of turbomachinery blade, the adiabatic efficiency objective is improved substantially while total pressure ratio objective is increased a very small amount. The multi-objective optimization shows that the efficiency can be increased with the less compensation of total pressure reduction or both objectives can be increased simultaneously.

  • Restiction of vertical and lateral accelerations is one of the very important requierments which has to be satisfied on the practice of automatically controlled flights of the civil aviation passenger planes. This goal could be achived on the basis of the optimization procedure using specilly constructed quadratic performance index. In the report the application of this procedure to the parameteric optimization of the control laws with known structure for autopilot of midium-size aircraft in the level flight model is demonstrated. Performance index is calculted on the basis of the controllability grammian. Results of simulation of control processes in the lateral and longitudinal channels sre represented.

Genetic Algorithm Based Design Optimization of a Six Phase Induction Motor

  • An optimally designed six-phase induction motor (6PIM) is compared with an initial design induction motor having the same ratings. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) method is used for optimization and multi objective function is considered. Comparison of the optimum design with the initial design reveals that better performance can be obtained by a simple optimization method. Also in this paper each design of 6PIM, is simulated by MAXWELL_2D. The obtained simulation results are compared in order to find the most suitable solution for the specified application, considering the influence of each design upon the motor performance. Construction a 6PIM based on the information obtained from GA method has been done. Quality parameters of the designed motors, such as: efficiency, power losses and power factor measured and optimal design has been evaluated. Laboratory tests have proven the correctness of optimal design.

Control of the pressurized water nuclear reactors power using optimized proportional-integral-derivative controller with particle swarm optimization algorithm

  • Various controllers such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers have been designed and optimized for load-following issues in nuclear reactors. To achieve high performance, gain tuning is of great importance in PID controllers. In this work, gains of a PID controller are optimized for power-level control of a typical pressurized water reactor using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The point kinetic is used as a reactor power model. In PSO, the objective (cost) function defined by decision variables including overshoot, settling time, and stabilization time (stability condition) must be minimized (optimized). Stability condition is guaranteed by Lyapunov synthesis. The simulation results demonstrated good stability and high performance of the closed-loop PSO-PID controller to response power demand.
