Do Teams Perform Better than Singles? : Evidence from the Mutual Fund Industry in Korea

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential benefits or detriments of team management on fund performance in the mutual fund market. An additional purpose of this study is to examine the optimal number of managers in a fund industry for superior performance. Research design, data, and methodology - This paper investigates the effect of managerial structure on fund performance in the Korean active mutual fund market between 2001 and 2008. For this, we analyze two risk-adjusted performances measures- the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the three-factor model of Fama & French (1993). Results - First, we found that single-managed funds exhibited superior performance. Second major finding was that as the number of managers in a fund increases, the fund performance deteriorates. Finally, the results reveal that the sharpest performance drop occurs when team size increases from a 5-person team to a 6-person team. Conclusions - The results suggest that the management structure can be a source of competitive advantage for fund performance. As considering fund performance is the outcome of managers' decision-making, this study contributes to not only the financial literature but also the literature in other areas, such as management and general business.

Liquidity and Solvency Management and its Impact on Financial Performance: Empirical Evidence from Jordan

  • The study aims to examine the impact of liquidity and solvency management on the financial performance of Jordanian manufacturing companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange, for a period of 10 years from 2010 to 2019. The size of the company was used as a control variable. The study employs Return on Assets (ROA) and Earnings Per Share (EPS) to measure financial performance. Current ratio (CR) and total debts to total assets were used as proxies for liquidity and solvency management, while logarithm of total assets was used to measure the size. Correlation and multi regression analyses have been applied to analyze the data. The results show a statistically significant impact of independent and control variables (liquidity and solvency management and the size of the company) on financial performance, while the detailed results of the hypotheses indicate that liquidity has an insignificant reverse impact on financial performance. With respect to other variables, there is a significant positive impact of size on performance and a significant negative impact of solvency on performance. The study suggests in light of results, increasing investments in companies' assets by focusing on internal financing, such that large-sized companies with low leverage will have a good performance.

The Role of Business Capabilities in Supporting Organization Agility and Performance During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Study in Indonesia

  • This study aims to analyze the important role of business analytics capability, information quality, and innovation capability in influencing organization agility and organization performance during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data was collected from 76 companies from various sectors in Indonesia. Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between variables and test a series of hypotheses. Importance-Performance Matrix Analysis (IPMA), a useful analysis approach in PLS-SEM, is used, which extends the results of the estimated path coefficient (importance) by adding a dimension that considers the average values of the latent variable scores (performance). The IPMA approach examines not only the performance of an item but also the importance of that item. The results show that business analytics capability has a significant effect on information quality and innovation capability which then affects organization agility. Organizational performance is influenced by organizational agility. IPMA results show that organizational agility has the highest level of impact on organizational performance. This study will assist companies in planning business analytics, improving information quality, increasing innovation capability, and ultimately increasing agility and performance during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study will add to existing knowledge about previous literature, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The Influence of Board Ownership on Bank Performance: Evidence from Saudi Arabia

  • The current study aims to investigate the influence of different categories of ownership held by different types of board members on bank performance. The study uses a sample of Saudi listed banks for the period from 2011 to 2018. The results of the panel data analysis using firm fixed-effects regression model indicate that bank performance is significantly and positively affected by the chairman ownership and the CEO ownership. However, board independent members' ownership has a negative influence on bank performance. While non-executive board members' ownership and family board members have an insignificant impact on bank performance. Control variables, including board size, non-executive board members, government ownership, leverage, and bank size are significantly associated with bank performance. Overall, the results indicate that Saudi bank performance is higher in smaller banks that have smaller boards with lower non-executive members, lower portion of shares held by independent board members, higher portion of shares held by the chairman, CEO, and government, and higher leverage. The results of this study provide important implications for regulatory authorities and market participants in Saudi Arabia and countries with ownership concentration to understand the actual role of different categories of board ownership on firm performance in addition to optimize board ownership.

프로젝트 관리자의 서번트 리더십이 고객만족을 통해 프로젝트 성과에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Project Managers'Servant Leadership on Project Performance via Customer Satisfaction)

  • Purpose: Since the servant leadership of project managers is seemingly related to the project performance by influencing project team members' positive attitude and behavior, this study attempts to provide empirical evidence for a link between servant leadership and project performance. In addition, the present study investigates the mediating effects of customer satisfaction on the servant leadership-project performance relations. Methods: The data of servant leadership and project performance were collected from 185 project team members of a company providing IT service, and customer satisfaction data were collected from 100 project clients served by the company. Before testing the hypotheses, we calculated aggregation statistics(e.g., $r_{wg}$, ICC(1), and ICC(2)) to ensure appropriate aggregation of servant leadership scores. The statistics confirmed the use of 67 team level servant leadership scores with project performance and customer satisfaction. Results: The results show that servant leadership is significantly related to three project performance measures(perceptions of performance contribution and sales contribution, and actual project profits) in the current team-level sample. Results also indicate that the clients' perception of customer satisfaction shows a mediating effect in the process of servant leadership affecting sales contribution of project performance. Conclusion: The present study empirically confirms that servant leadership plays a major role in enhancing project performance on team level analysis. The results suggest that servant leadership increases customer satisfaction since the project managers serve and care for their team members which translate into effective customer service. Theoretical and practical implications are reviewed, and limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are addressed.

사회적기업의 윤리경영이 조직성과에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Ethical Management on Organizational Performance in Social Enterprise)

  • 본 연구는 기업 윤리경영에 관한 사회적기업 연구가 전무한 상황에서 사회적기업 근로자들이 인식하는 기업 윤리경영의 하위요인 기업윤리와 윤리적 리더십이 경영적 성과, 사회적 성과에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위하여 수행되었다. 이를 위해 충남 및 세종지역에 근무하는 사회적기업 근로자 173명을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 분석결과 사회적기업에 있어서 윤리경영 하위요인 중에서 윤리적 리더십이 사회적기업의 경영적 성과와 사회적 성과에 모두 정적(+)으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 사회적기업 경영자의 윤리적 리더십에 대한 근로자 인식이 증가할수록 해당 기업의 경영적 성과뿐만 아니라 사회적 성과도 증가하는 것이다. 아울러 사회서비스 제공형 사회적기업에 근무하는 근로자일수록 경영적 성과가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 일반 영리기업에서 윤리경영이 조직성과에 영향을 미치는 것과 마찬가지의 결과였다. 이상의 연구결과는 사회적기업에서 그동안 강조되어 온 사회적기업가 정신의 강화 필요성을 다시 한번 확인해 주는 것이다. 향후 윤리경영을 사회적기업에 도입하기 위하여 사회적기업에 맞는 윤리경영의 개념과 적용방안 마련이 필요할 것이다.

샌드위치형 레이돔의 전기적 성능개선 위한 성형압력 영향성 연구 (A Study on Effects of the Cure Pressure for the Improvement of the Electrical Performance of the Sandwich Type Radome)

  • Purpose: This paper analyzes the phenomenon on the degradation of the electrical performance by the pressure in the manufacturing process of sandwich type radomes. Methods: This paper consists of two steps to analyze the relation between the electrical performance and the pressure. First, the thickness of the core of the flat panels which were fabricated with different pressure was measured with the microscope, and then the electrical performance of the flat panels was analyzed with simulation and experiment. Based on the results of the electrical performance and the measured thickness with respect to the flat panels, the relation between the electrical performance and the applied pressure in the manufacturing process was analyzed. Results: The simulated and measured results with respect to the flat panel shows that the high pressure results in the nonuniform thickness of the core, which is applied to the radome fabrication. As a result, the degradation of the electrical performance occurs because the unintended scattered field is generated as the electromagnetic wave transmits (or impinges upon) the radome. Furthermore, we observed that the electrical performance of both the flat panel and the radome got worse as the high pressure was applied. Conclusion: Through simulation and experiment, therefore, it is demonstrated that for the high pressure in the manufacturing process the nonuniform thickness of the core increases and results in the degradation of the electrical performance of the radome.

소수력발전입지의 수문학적 성능특성 (Hydrologic Performance Characteristics of Small Scale Hydro Power Site)

  • The model to predict flow duration characteristics and performance for small scale hydro power(SSHP) plants is studied to analyze the effects of rainfall condition. One existing SSHP plant was selected and performance characteristics was analyzed by using the developed model. The predicted results from the model developed show that the data were in good agreement with operational results of existing SSHP plant. The results show that both the scale parameter and the shape parameter have large effects on the performance of SSHP sites. And also it was found that the model developed in this study can be a useful tool to predict the performance of SSHP sites.

  • The study has following objectives: First, an objective of this studies proves relations between a entrepreneurship and an innovation performance. Second, in innovation performance relationships of social capital this studies proves a mediating effects of a social capitall through theory study, an empirical analysis. In accordance with results of a hypothesis verification, first, a entrepreneurship affects positively a innovation performanc. Second, in accordance with analysis results of a social capital, an entrepreneurship, a innovation performance verified a mediating effects of a social capital. This results mean that the more a social capital an organization has among members, the higher an innovation performance.

  • This study is a subsequent research results of Lee and Hwang (2015) and presents results of the case in which an information system is developed and applied for the performance management scheme proposed by the early study. This study aims to provide the organizations that want to implement and apply an effective IS operational performance management scheme with the practical alternatives that they may consider. This study first summarize the major contents of the performance management scheme proposed by the early study. Then, the processes and detailed contents in which an information system is developed in order to operate and improve the performance management scheme. The specific contents provided by the study include the system development environments and methods, system architecture, and application structure. Finally, this study summarizes the major results of the study and suggests future research directions.
