Strategic improvement of short-term agricultural machinery rental system using importance performance analysis (IPA분석을 통한 농업기계 임대사업의 전략적 개선방안)

  • Short-term agricultural machinery rental system has been operated by agricultural extension organization of local government (agricultural technology center) and sponsored by Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, to improve utilization efficiency and save agricultural production cost through joint utilization of agricultural machinery. This study was conducted to analyze current status of the rental system operation and provide recommendations for future direction. Question survey was conducted for officers in charge of the rental system in the technology center, and strategic improvement was suggested through importance performance analysis (IPA). Survey results showed that 11 issues should be reformed or improved by 2015, which is not practically feasible. IPA analysis resulted that administration and manpower support, cooperation between federal and local organizations, and cooperation with other organizations should be focused for successful operation of the rental system. Issues that seem to happen after 2015 need to be handled as future research.

Device and Circuit Performance Issues with Deeply Scaled High-K MOS Transistors

  • In this paper we look at the effect of Fringe-Enhanced-Barrier-lowering (FEBL) for high-K dielectric MOSFETs and the dependence of FEBL on various technological parameters (spacer dielectrics, overlap length, dielectric stack, S/D junction depth and dielectric thickness). We show that FEBL needs to be contained in order to maintain the performance advantage with scaled high-K dielectric MOSFETs. The degradation in high-K dielectric MOSFETs is also identified as due to the additional coupling between the drain-to-source that occurs through the gate insulator, when the gate dielectric constant is significantly higher than the silicon dielectric constant. The technology parameters required to minimize the coupling through the high-K dielectric are identified. It is also shown that gate dielectric stack with a low-K material as bottom layer (very thin $SiO_2$ or oxy-nitride) will be helpful in minimizing FEBL. The circuit performance issues with high-K MOS transistors are also analyzed in this paper. An optimum range of values for the dielectric constant has been identified from the delay and the energy dissipation point of view. The dependence of the optimum K for different technology generations has been discussed. Circuit models for the parasitic capacitances in high-K transistors, by incorporating the fringing effects, have been presented.

Valuation and Improvement on Micro-gripper System by Axiomatic Design (공리적 설계를 이용한 마이크로 그립퍼 시스템의 평가 및 개선)

  • The micro-gripper system is one of the systems that should be improved in the respect of performance for practical usage. In the previous works, the important issues are considered and presented using axiomatic design approach. In this paper, the functional requirements and design parameters are evaluated in order to improve the performance and efficiency of the system. The evaluation is a very difficult task since many variables are related to the outcomes. To provide a basis for correct design decisions, axiomatic design principles have been advanced. Since the framework of axiomatic design makes design issues easier to understand when they are analyzed, we used those as an evaluation tool. The object of the system is to handle micro-size parts. Main device is a micro-gripper using two bender-typed and one stack-typed PZTs as actuators. And it has three tips made of tungsten wires fur holding function. Also the system must satisfy other functional requirements for appropriate handling performance. The results of this study show design improvements of micro-gripper system such as structural change of gripper, additional element, and integration of physical parts. Axiomatic design guides presented suitable design parameters corresponding to functional requirements and made the design elements improve through diagrams of whole system.

A Study on the Kernel-Based Management for Mobile Grid Application (모바일 그리드 어플리케이션을 위한 커널 기반 관리방안에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, we introduce the mobile grid architecture using kernel-based managements. Mobile grid paradigm is used to allow mobile users to access distributed resources in a transparent, secure and effective way. Each mobile grid user requests job submission, searches for suitable resources to run Job, executes the job to the allocated system resources, and receives the results of the requested job. There are a number of challenging issues when taking mobile environment into account, such as limited performance of mobile devices and mobility of mobile device. To resolve these issues, we design and implement the kernel-based management system for mobile grid application to overcome the limited resources of mobile devices. Also, we show the efficiency of the suggested architecture using the performance evaluation.

Prospect on IMO's Performance Standards for Protective Coatings (PSPC) Regulation for Ship's Water Ballast Tanks

  • In 2006, as a means to minimize early corrosion failure of ships, thus to enhance marine safety, International Maritime Organization (IMO), proposed a mandatory regulation for Performance Standards for the Protective Coatings (PSPC) for ballast tanks of newly built ships to satisfy 15 years of target useful life. In this regulation, several unprecedented strict rules are adopted as minimum, mandatory requirements for protective coatings of ship's water ballast tanks, and all type of ships sailing international sea are subjected to this regulation which is to be effective as early as June of 2008. The PSPC addresses many technical issues in the areas of surface pretreatment (primary and secondary), coating materials, coating application procedure and inspection as well as necessary documentation. The PSPC rules are new and unproven concepts, which calls for rigorous incorporation of reality-based evidences currently available, since there are no practical experiences in terms of the validity of the PSPC rules. There has been much controversy surrounding these regulations and considerable effort has been made by both shipyards and ship owners alike to achieve a performance standard for ballast tank coatings, which is acceptable to all. In this paper, the background and overview of the PSPC rules are given, and several issues in the PSPC are reviewed as a base to achieve robustness of the proposed PSPC, which will serve as a means to minimize early corrosion and to ensure 15 year target useful life of ships.

Laser Micro-Joining and Soldering (레이저 마이크로 접합 및 솔더링)

  • In this paper, the principles, types and characteristics of the laser and laser soldering are introduced. Laser soldering methods for electronics, metals, semiconductors are also presented. Laser soldering is a non-contact process that transfers energy to solder joint by a precisely controlled beam. Demands for laser soldering are increasing due to bonding for complex circuits and local heating in micro joint. Laser absorption ratio depends on materials, and each material has different absorption or reflectivity of the laser beam, which requires fine adjustment of the laser beam. Laser types and operating conditions are also important factors for laser soldering performance. In this paper, the performance of Nd:YAG laser soldering is compared to the hot blast reflow. Meanwhile, a diode laser gives different wavelength and smaller parts with high performance, but it has various reliability issues such as heat loss, high power, and cooling technology. These issues need to be improved in the future, and further studies for laser micro-joining and soldering are required.

  • Recently, electric semiconductors became an issue because of efficient use of energy and compaction of electronics. Silicon electric semiconductors are difficult to put into it because of its physical limitations. Hence, the study of WBG (Wideband Gap) semiconductors like SiC and GaN began. These devices received attention because it can be miniaturized and worked at high temperatures over $300^{\circ}C$. WBG MOSFET electric semiconductors can show performance like silicon IGBT. This can solve the current problem of IGBT tail. The current study shows the technical principles and issues related to SiC and GaN power semiconductors. WBG devices can achieve high performance compared to silicon, but its performance can't be fully utilized because of lack in bonding technology. Therefore, this review introduces research on WBG devices and their packaging issues.

Load Balancing Approach to Enhance the Performance in Cloud Computing

  • Virtualization technologies are being adopted and broadly utilized in many fields and at different levels. In cloud computing, achieving load balancing across large distributed virtual machines is considered a complex optimization problem with an essential importance in cloud computing systems and data centers as the overloading or underloading of tasks on VMs may cause multiple issues in the cloud system like longer execution time, machine failure, high power consumption, etc. Therefore, load balancing mechanism is an important aspect in cloud computing that assist in overcoming different performance issues. In this research, we propose a new approach that combines the advantages of different task allocation algorithms like Round robin algorithm, and Random allocation with different threshold techniques like the VM utilization and the number of allocation counts using least connection mechanism. We performed extensive simulations and experiments that augment different scheduling policies to overcome the resource utilization problem without compromising other performance measures like makespan and execution time of the tasks. The proposed system provided better results compared to the original round robin as it takes into consideration the dynamic state of the system.

  • This paper proposed an application of agile management method to resolve the electrical system issues identified during the mass production phase of aged aircraft performance improvement. The proposed method was applied from issue analysis to on-site verification and testing stage, before the formal configuration control process. At this time, the project was carried out by setting a sprint period to complete the verification according to requirements through daily scrum and sprint review. As a result, It was verified that the wiring installation of the aircraft, which was the output of the sprint, met requirements within the defined sprint period.

  • The Australian construction industry is characterized as being a competitive and risky business environment due to lack of cooperation, insufficient trust, ineffective communication and adversarial relationships which are likely lead to poor project performance. Relational contracting (RC) is advocated by literature as an innovative approach to improve the procurement process in the construction industry. Various studies have collectively added to the current knowledge of known RC norms, but there seem to be little effort on investigating the determinants of RC and its impact on project outcomes. In such circumstances, there is lack of evidence and explanation on the manner on how these issues lead to different performance. Simultaneously, the New Engineering Contract (NEC) that embraced the concept of RC is seen as a modern way of contracting and also considered as one of the best approaches to the perennial problem of improving adversarial relationships within the industry. The reality of practice of RC in Australia is investigated through the lens of the NEC. A synthesis of literature views on the concept, processes and tools of RC is first conducted to develop the framework of RC. A case study approach is proposed for an in-depth analysis to explore the critical issues addressed by RC in relation to project performance. Understanding the realities of RC will assist stakeholders in the construction industry with their investment in RC.
