  • In this study, we developed an elementary science performance assessment material on STS theme, especially the respiration. The material is constituted with 3 components, which are performance task, students' response format and scoring system, and it also has various objective domains such as applying science knowledge, improving science attitude, using ICT, communicating and reflective thinking. It offers teachers a tool by which they can assess students' abilities on a whole. The task is made with the motivation-evoking content of 'No Smoking'. It is constructed on the activity of writing a letter to his/her father not to smoke. The students' response format is made by problem solving process, and the scoring system is matched with the steps of students' response. The material involves several theoretical backgrounds and the strengths of performance assessment. In addition, due to the detailed students' format and scoring system, it can be used practically in elementary science classroom.

  • The correct and opportune decision of reengaging the intercepted target is required in order to enhance the engagement performance of the surface to air missile systems that has the ability to defense or attack against various targets at the same time. The engagement efficiency and success of these systems will be largely enhanced by assigning quickly its system resources to the intercepted target and minimizing the waste of system resources for the target which is not able to attack any more. The kill-assessment algorithm has to be able to evaluate automatically whether various targets intercepted by missiles are killed or not on the basis of the reasonable confidence level. The definition of kill assessment is discussed and the kill assessment algorithm is designed reliably by using Kalman filter and a probability theory. Finally its performance is evaluated and analyzed by the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This study developed a safety assessment tool for geological disposal systems called APro, a systemically integrated modeling system based on modularizing and coupling the processes which need to be considered in a geological disposal system. Thermal, hydraulic, chemical, canister failure, radionuclide release and transport processes were considered in the current version of APro. Each of the unit processes in APro consists of a single Default Module, and several Alternative Modules which can increase the flexibility of the model. As an initial stage of developing the modularization concept and modeling interface, the Default Modules of each unit process were described, with one Alternative Module of chemical process. The computation part of APro is mainly a MATLAB workspace controlling COMSOL and PHREEQC, which are coupled by an operator splitting scheme. The APro model domain is a stylized geological disposal system employing the Swedish disposal concept (KBS-3 type), but the repository layout can be freely adjusted. In order to show the applicability of APro to the total system performance assessment of geological disposal system, some sample simulations were conducted. From the results, it was confirmed that coupling of the thermal and hydraulic processes and coupling of the canister failure and the radionuclide release processes were well reflected in APro. In addition, the technical connectivity between COMSOL and PHREEQC was also confirmed.

  • Professional communication skills in writing and speaking with multiple and complex audiences are required to engineers in society of modern technology. In this paper, we proposed the effective assessment system for the Program Outcomes on the communication skill competence(PO7), which is one of the 12 program outcomes stipulated by ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea). To ensure logical connectivity of the assessment system, we carefully selected the performance criteria by defining the core concept of "written communication" and "verbal communication". Based on the selected performance criteria, the whole process of creating assessment tools and rubrics was explained in detail. It can be expected that the assessment for the Program Outcomes on the communication skill competence would be more systematic by using the proposed assessment system.

  • Kunsan National University obtained accreditation for its Architecture & Building Engineering Program from the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education in Korea (ABEEK) in 2004 and has offered an ABEEK-accredited degree pathway ever since. Then, in 2018, the university introduced the course-embedded outcomes assessment system as per ABEEK's KEC2015 accreditation criteria. One year into its implementation, the new system allows the measurement and assessment of 10 program outcomes covering 19 curricular modules and 1 non-curricular licensing examination. The system incorporates the four areas of specialization within architectural engineering as well as the three course categories of the math, science, and computer; liberal arts; and engineering core modules under the accreditation scheme. It also takes the students' academic years into account, especially for the mandatory modules offered to all students. Its rubric clarifies the performance criteria, performance level, assessment tools, objectives, and modules. The 2018 course-embedded outcomes assessment system is an ever-evolving structure with regular CQI: Continuous Quality Improvements along the circular process of system establishment → implementation → evaluation as per the virtuous cycle model required for an accredited engineering program.

  • The purpose of this paper is to identify the correlation of entrance score by observation and nomination system and performance assessment score for the gifted children in IT. In other words, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the reliability of observation and nomination system by analyzing and comparing entrance scores and performance assessment score during the period of attendance for the gifted children in IT. For this purpose, the gifted children are selected and analyzed in a gifted science center attached to a university at Seoul Metropolitan Area. The analysis results show that there is meaningful correlation between entrance score and performance assessment score. That is, if high scores in entrance exam means high scores in performance assessment scores. The result will be useful to trust and extend observation and nomination system for the selection of gifted children in IT.

  • This study is to suggest a performance assessment model for fire safety protection of office building 34 asessment elements were chosen by interviewing with experts, reviewing several codes and existing relevant models, assessment elements included in this model are comprised of five categories which are 'performace of protected area', 'performance of fire partition', 'safety performance of fire escape', 'performace of smoke control system' and 'performace of fire fighting equipment'. The weight of each element was computed by systematic approach like an AHP (analytical hierarchy process), which was conducted by experts who work in the field of fire protection. This model would be utilized as a part of assessment model for the overall performace of domestic office building.

  • In this paper, we present the FlappyBird Competition System (FCS) implementation, a competition-based automated assessment system used in an entry-level artificial intelligence (AI) course at a university. The proposed system provides an evaluation method suitable for AI courses while taking advantage of automated assessment methods. Students are to design a neural network structure, train the weights, and tune hyperparameters using the given reinforcement learning code to improve the overall performance of game AI. Students participate using the resulting trained model during the competition, and the system automatically calculates the final score based on the ranking. The user evaluation conducted after the semester ends shows that our competition-based automated assessment system promotes active participation and inspires students to be interested and motivated to learn AI. Using FCS, the instructor significantly reduces the amount of time required for assessment.

  • This study performed qualitative and quantitative risk assessment of equipment for evaluating the protocol of hydrogen refueling stations and suggested measures to improve safety. Hazard and operability study was performed for qualitative risk assessment, and Hy-KoRAM was used for quantitative risk assessment. Through a qualitative risk assessment, additional ventilation devices were installed, simultaneous venting of the storage container was prohibited, and the number of repeated refilling of the evaluation equipment was identified to manage the number of fillings of the container. Through quantitative risk assessment, the area around the device was set as a restricted area when evaluating the station, and measures were suggested to reduce the frequency of accidents.
