Ecological and Ethnomedicinal Survey of Plants within Homesteads in Abia State, Nigeria

  • Ecological and ethnomedicinal survey of plants was conducted in one hundred and twenty homesteads in Mbala, Amuda, Umuaku, and Nneato communities of Nneochi Local Governement Area, Abia State-Nigeria. A total of ninety-one medicinal plant species belonging to seventy-eight genera and forty-eight families, used in the treatment of malaria, yellow fever, fibroid, hepatitis, convulsion, hypertension, diabetes, insomnia, ulcer, rashes, low sperm count, snake bite, among others, were documented. Plant remedies were prepared mostly as infusions or decoctions from different plant parts with mainly water, and palm wine/gin sometimes. The highest number of medicinal plant species (73) was recorded in Mbala, followed by Amuda (71), Umuaku (68) and Nneato (61). Medicinal plant species diversity was highest in Amuda (Simpson 1-D=0.9621;H=3.663), followed by Umuaku (Simpson 1-D=0.9481; H=3.471), Mbala (Simpson 1-D=0.9345; H=3.341), and Nneato (Simpson 1-D=0.9307; H=3.277), respectively. Similarity in medicinal plant species was highest between Umuaku and Nneato (76.71%), followed by Amuda and Umuaku (75.95%), Mbala and Amuda (71.43%), while Mbala and Nneato had the lowest similarity (59.52%). The results of the study showed that traditional medicine is pivotal in the treatment of ailments in the study area, and that the indigenous people of Nneochi have recognized the need to conserve medicinal plants of importance ex situ within homesteads due to threats from unsustainable exploitation and deforestation.

  • Augmentative and alternative communication(AAC) is a communication tool for those with impairments or restrictions on the production or comprehension of spoken language. Traditional AAC has used a portable board with pictures and texts with which disabled person could be supported by it. Currently, smart phone based AAC researches and developments are actively studying. With emerging concepts of context-aware computing, the mobile devices can provide mobile users with timely information and location based services. We proposed a adjustable AAC system for disabled people of which has variable layouts and selectable items. We also implemented context-ware application for AAC systems including time, location and click count informations on smart phone. The system can adaptively change its layout and select AAC items depending on various situation of disabled persons.

An Epidemilolgical Survey of Echinostoma hortense Infection in Chongsong-gun, Kyongbuk Province (경북 청송군 일부 기역의 호르틴스극구흡충 유행양상)

  • An epidemiological study was performed to know the infection status of 5. hortense among the human residents and fish intermediate hosts in Chongsong·gun, Kyongsangbuk·do. Out of 263 people examined, 59(22.4%) were positive for the eggs of E. hortense. Total 152 fresh water fishes (9 species) were ellamined, and Odentobutis obscura interrupts, Misgurnus an- guiIZicaudatus and Squalidus coreanus were found to harbour the metacercariae of E. hortense. Juvenile or adult E. hertense were expelled from 35 out of 54 cases treated with pragiquantel. The number of worms Per individual ranged from 1 to 649, with the average burden of 51. The eosinophil count of infected persons ranged 1∼24% (6% in average). The number of eggs per day Per worm (EPDPW) in human host was estimated about 1,478. The results showed that Chongsong-gun is an endemic area of E. hortense.

Xeroderma pigmentosum group A with mutational hot spot (c.390-1G>C in XPA ) in South Korea

  • Purpose: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder of DNA repair in which the ability to repair damage caused by ultraviolet light is deficient. We reported the first molecularly confirmed Korean patient of XP by targeted exome sequencing. The prevalence of XP included all subtype and carrier frequency of XP-A the using public data were estimated for the first time in South Korea. Materials and Methods: We described a 4-year-old Korean girl with clinical diagnosis of XP. We performed targeted exome sequencing in the patient for genetic confirmation considering disease genetic heterogeneity and for differential diagnosis. We verified a carrier frequency of c.390-1G>C in XPA gene known as mutational hot spot using Korean Reference Genome Data Base. We estimated the period prevalence of all subtypes of XP based on claims data of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service in South Korea. Results: We identified homozygous splicing mutation of XPA (c.390-1G>C) in the patient. The carrier frequency of risk for XPA (c.390-1G>C) was relatively high 1.608 e-03 (allele count 2/1244). The prevalence of XP in South Korea was 0.3 per million people. Conclusion: We expect that c.390-1G>C is hot spot for the mutation of XPA and possible founder variant in South Korea. However, the prevalence in South Korea was extremely low compared with Western countries and Japan.

Therefore fire protection system is facilities that control the latter fire by mechanic means Building over a certain scale is required this system. As the small from the fire extinguisher as the large to the sprinkler system of automatic fire extinguishing equipment, the kinds are various. With the development of architecture technique while modern higher buildings are increased high level and fire prevent facilities aren't reached to that level. The object of this study is present the problem which appear from the analysis of place standard for fire protection facility. This study described as a following order. First, We are going to look history of the fire protection system and change course of that with the year and facility. Second. We say the frame system and special nature of the foreign fire prevent Act. Third. We understand the control reality of fire protection system. Fourth. We took out the merit of foreign fire prevent law and the problem of our current domestic system. The placing standard of proper fire protection facilities that be presented from this study are followed next. 1) We have to reinforce sprinkler system placing standard for the fire extinguishing and check the spread of fire. 2) We must to be ruled the standard for keeping fire prevention system that are received reality and people's idea. 3) We should prepare lawful basis which can be place fire prevention center. 4) We have to correct the standard of use count about complex building without mainuse and we take increase the real effectiveness of this. 5) We ought to match the use of current fire prevention act and the use of architecture law.

Ovariectomy of Fibroma in Paint Horse by Using the Diagonal Paramedian Approach (Diagonal paramedian approach법을 이용한 말에서 난소 제거술)

  • A 10-year-old Paint horse was presented with gradual changes in behavior, characterized as stallion-like including aggressiveness towards people and other horse. The abnormal right ovary was detected via transrectal ultrasonography and rectal palpation. A complete blood count and biochemical panel values were within reference ranges. The hormone analysis revealed increased testosterone 46.00 pg/mL and inhibin 0.856 ng/mL, and progesterone concentration consistent with absence of luteal tissue 1.2 ng/mL more than normal values. The purpose of the study reported was to describe a ovariectomy of enlarged ovary by using the diagonal paramedian approach. This method is useful to minimize surgical exposure and hemorrhage. This ovary was confirmed fibroma by histological examination post operation. Behavior problems and the hormone values were alleviated after surgery, and clinical signs of complication were not showed.

Development of Nutrition Screening Index for Hospitalized Patients (입원 환자 영양검색 지표 개발)

  • Several studies about hospital malnutrition have been reported that about more than 40% of hospitalized patients are having nutritional risk factors and hospital malnutrition presents a high prevalence. People in a more severe nutritional status ended up with a longer length of hospital stay and higher hospital cost. Nutrition screening tools identify individuals who are malnourished or at risk of becoming malnourished and who may benefit from nutritional support. For the early detection and treatment of malnourished hospital patients , few valid screening instruments fur Koreans exist. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a simple, reliable and valid malnutrition screening tool that could be used at hospital admission to identify adult patients at risk of malnutrition using medical electrical record data. Two hundred and one patients of the university affiliated medical center were assessed on nutritional status and classified as well nourished, moderately or severely malnourished by a Patient-Generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA) being chosen as the 'gold standard' for defining malnutrition. The combination of nutrition screening questions with the highest sensitivity and specificity at prediction PG-SGA was termed the nutrition screening index (NSI). Odd ratio, and binary logistic regression were used to predict the best nutritional status predictors. Based on regression coefficient score, albumin less than 3.5 g/dl, body mass index (BMI) less than $18.5kg/m^2$, total lymphocyte count less than 900 and age over 65 were determined as the best set of NSI. By using best nutritional predictors receiver operating characteristic curve with the area under the curve, sensitivity and 1-specificity were analyzed to determine the best optimal cut-off point to decide normal or abnormal in nutritional status. Therefore simple and beneficial NSI was developed for identifying patients with severe malnutrition. Using NSI, nutritional information of the severe malnutrition patient should be shared with physicians and they should be cared for by clinical dietitians to improve their nutritional status.

  • Kimchi is Korean traditional culinary culture and one of the most representative, Korean cultural archetypes which reflect Korean sentiment and culture. Further, its virtue as a food has drawn attention from all over the world. One thing that you can count as the most important thing in successful cultural content is creative material. Kimchi is a life cultural content with universal quality which is shared with mankind in its culinary culture and originality generated from Korean people and its history. The rich cultural factors of Kimchi, in mental and material aspects, can be a platform for successful content which is globally competitive. Contents of Kimchi culture, which can be applied to various cultural business, has been developed on the basis of its colorful cultural factors. And with the cases used as standards, OSMU type cultural content development process of cultural archetype was suggested. This study was intended to suggest Korean cultural archetype's possibility to be developed into a life cultural content and tried to help building cultural content development process of Korean life cultural archetype.

Radioprotective Effect of Panax ginseng against Giant Cell Formation in The Testis of Irradiated Mice

  • Panax ginseng (family- Araliaceae) is a native plant of Korea and has been used for past several years among oriental people. To evaluate the radioprotective potential of P. ginseng on the formation of giant cells in the testis of Swiss albino mice, the animals were divided into four groups: -(I)-Only vehicle was administered. (II)P. ginseng treated group: -The animals received 10 mg/kg body weight P. ginseng root extract (in DDW) i.p. continuously for 30 days. (III) Irradiated group: -The animals were exposed to 8 Gy gamma radiation at the dose rate of 1.69 Gy/min at the distance of 80 ems. (IV) Combined treatment group: -Animals were given P. ginseng extract for four days and on fourth day they were irradiated to 8 Gy gamma radiation after 30 minute of extract administration. The animals of these three groups were autopsied on day 1,3, 7, 14 and 30 days. In ginseng treated group, active spermatogenesis was observed without any toxic effect. Histopathological studies of irradiated group (II) revealed reduction in germ cell count, loss of sperms and formation of multinucleated giant cells on day 7th. These giant cells were formed by round nuclei of early or late spermatids. In combination group (III), although germinal epithelium was still disorganized with loss of cells in few tubules, but no giant cell formation was observed. In order to know the mechanism of radioprotection of ginseng, LPO and GSH were estimated. It was observed that pretreated irradiated animals showed inhibition of LPO and increase in GSH. Thus the present study suggests ginseng protects male gonads. This may be attributed to the inhibition of LPO and increase synthesis of GSH byginseng.

Multi-channel Video Analysis Based on Deep Learning for Video Surveillance (보안 감시를 위한 심층학습 기반 다채널 영상 분석)

  • In this paper, a video analysis is proposed to implement video surveillance system with deep learning object detection and probabilistic data association filter for tracking multiple objects, and suggests its implementation using GPU. The proposed video analysis technique involves object detection and object tracking sequentially. The deep learning network architecture uses ResNet for object detection and applies probabilistic data association filter for multiple objects tracking. The proposed video analysis technique can be used to detect intruders illegally trespassing any restricted area or to count the number of people entering a specified area. As a results of simulations and experiments, 48 channels of videos can be analyzed at a speed of about 27 fps and real-time video analysis is possible through RTSP protocol.
