  • Band-notched ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas using frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are presented. The proposed antennas utilized the band rejection characteristic of typical FSS unit cells. We loaded the FSS unit cells on the same plane of planar UWB antenna. These antennas are designed to reject the interference from the wireless local area network band, 5.15-5.825 GHz in the UWB band, 3.1-10.6 GHz. The measured peak gains of the proposed antennas are more than 2 dBi at both operation edge and center frequencies, and sufficient to apply for commercial purpose. The antennas are small size and planar shape for the purpose of the small mobile application, and enhanced design freedom by using various existing FSS unit cells.

  • We report the structure, thermal and magnetic properties of a non-equilibrium $Al_{0.6}(Fe_{50}Cu_{50})_{0.4}$ alloy powder produced by rod milling and chemical leaching. An X-ray diffractometry(XRD), a transmission electron microscope(TEM), a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC), a vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM), and superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID) were utilized to characterize the as-milled and leaching specimens. The crystallite size reached a value of about 8.82 nm. In the DSC experiment, the peak temperatures and crystallization temperatures decreased with increasing milling time. The activation energy of crystallization is 200.5 kJ/mole for as-milled alloy powder. The intensities of the XRD peaks of as-milled powders associated with the bcc type $Al_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ structure formative at $350^{\circ}C$ sharply increase with increasing annealing temperature. Above $400^{\circ}C$, peaks alloted to $Al_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ and $Al_{5}Fe_{2}$ are observed. After annealing at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1h, the leached Ll specimen transformed into bcc $\alpha$-Fe and fcc Cu phases, accompanied by a change in the structural and magnetic properties. The saturation magnetization decreased with increasing milling time, and a value of about 8.42 emu/g was reached at 500 h of milling. The coercivity reached a maximum value of about 142.7 Oe after 500 h of milling. The magnetization of leached specimens as function of fields were higher at 5 K, and increased more sharply at 5 K than at 100 K.

  • Tumor cell morphology is closely related to its migratory behaviors. An active tumor cell has a highly irregular shape, whereas a spherical cell is inactive. Thus, quantitative analysis of cell features is crucial to determine tumor malignancy or to test the efficacy of anticancer treatment. We use 3D time-lapse phase-contrast microscopy to analyze single cell morphology because it enables to observe long-term activity of living cells without photobleaching and phototoxicity, which is common in other fluorescence-labeled microscopy. Despite this advantage, there are image-level drawbacks to phase-contrast microscopy, such as local light effect and contrast interference ring. Therefore, we first corrected for non-uniform illumination artifacts and then we use intensity distribution information to detect cell boundary. In phase contrast microscopy image, cell is normally appeared as dark region surrounded by bright halo ring. Due to halo artifact is minimal around the cell body and has non-symmetric diffusion pattern, we calculate cross sectional plane which intersects center of each cell and orthogonal to first principal axis. Then, we extract dark cell region by analyzing intensity profile curve considering local bright peak as halo area. Finally, we calculated the Fourier descriptor that morphological characteristics of cell to classify tumor cells into active and inactive groups. We validated classification accuracy by comparing our findings with manually obtained results.

  • An RF module in compliance with the IEEE 802.11a standard has been designed and its performance has been measured. Conventional heterodyne architecture with 580MHz intermediate frequency has been realized. Measurement results show that the receiver has a low Noise Figure of 5dB, the maximum gain of 70dB, and dynamic range as wide as 61dB. Also, the SAW filter used for channel selection in the IF section allowed minimum inter-channel interference. in addition to satisfying the RF output power requirement, the transmitter features its output P1dB as high as 34dBm so that the high peak-to-average ratio of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme can be handled with minimum nonlinear distortion. The output P1dB of 34dBm of the transmitter corresponds to back-off powers of 18dB and 11dB with respect to the output power for the low and the middle frequency bands, respectively.

  • We have fabricated a low-noise 61-channel axial-type first-order gradiometer system for measuring fetal magnetocardiography(MCG) signals. Superconducting quantum interference device(SQUID) sensor was based on double relaxation oscillation SQUID(DROS) for detecting biomagnetic signal, such as MCG, magnetoencphalogram(MEG) and fetal-MCG. The SQUID sensor detected axial component of fetal MCG signal. The pickup coil of SQUID sensor was wound with 120 ${\mu}m$ NbTi wire on bobbin(20 mm diameter) and was a first-order gradiometer to reject the environment noise. The sensors have low white noise of 3 $fT/Hz^{1/2}$ at 100 Hz on average. The fetal MCG was measured from $24{\sim}36$ weeks fetus in a magnetically shielded room(MSR) with shielding factor of 35 dB at 0.1 Hz and 80 dB at 100 Hz(comparatively mild shielding). The MCG signal contained maternal and fetal MCG. Fetal MCG could be distinguished relatively easily from maternal MCG by using independent component analysis(ICA) filter. In addition, we could observe T peak as well as QRS wave, respectively. It will be useful in detecting fetal cardiac diseases.

  • A transmission type color filter based on a thin film Ag-$SiO_2$-Ag etalon was proposed and realized in a quartz substrate. The device could acquire infrared suppressed transmission and wide effective area compared to costly e-beam lithography and laser interference lithography. The FDTD method was introduced to take into account the effect of the dispersion characteristics of the silver metal and the thickness thereof. Three different color filters were devised: The cavity length for the red, green and blue filters were 160 nm, 130 nm, and 100 nm respectively, with the metal layer unchanged at 25 nm. The observed center wavelengths were measured at 650 nm, 555 nm, and 480 nm for the red, green, and blue devices; the corresponding bandwidths were about 120 nm, 100 nm, and 120 nm; and the peak transmission for all was ~60%. Finally the relative transmission was measured to decline with the angle of the incident beam with the rate of 1%/degree.

  • A simple procedure, readily available at low cost with a sensitivity sufficient to determine trace levels of iron in seawater is proposed, which utilizes adsorptive accumulation of the iron/catechol complex on the mercury drop electrode in a borate medium of pH 8.0. Optimal conditions include a solution concentration of 2 mM catechol, 2.5 mM borate and a pH of 8.0, an accumulation potential of - 0.25 V is applied for 1∼3 min, and the potential scan is in the differential pulse mode. The limit of detection is 1.5 nM Fe using a preconcentration time of 3 min. The interference from copper can be eliminated and baseline slope is greatly improved, because its peak is well separated from that of iron in the proposed medium.

  • Small vibration displacements may be measured by optical interferometers, based on the Michelson method. The standard Michelson interferometer works well when the mirror displacements are relatively large compared to the optical wavelength. But it does not work for displacements less than approximately a quater of optical wavelength. Several multiple reflection laser interferometers, simply modified standard Michelson interferometer, have been developed to decrease the minimum detectable limits. Among these a relatively simple and easy multiple reflection system is used to measure the small vibration displacements. This multiple reflection system is constructed with a right angle prism and a convex lens. Therefore this system makes it possible to measure a vibration displacement of the small area on the vibrating structure. The fringe interpolation method and curve fitting method are used to determine accurately the small vibration displacements from the measured interference fringe patterns. Also computer simulation technique is used to check the accuracies of these method. According to the results of the computer simulation technique, the curve fitting method is more accurate than the fringe interpolation method. The optically measured results are in good agreement with those of the standard accelerometer with high accuracy and it is possible to measure the peak vibration displacement as small as 9.01nm using multiple reflection system and curve fitting method.

  • The use of holographic interference lithography and removal techniques to corrugate GaAs substrate have been studied. The periodic photoresist structure, which serves as a protective mask during etching, is holographically prepared. Subsequently periodic V-grooved pattern is formed on the GaAs substrate by conventional a H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$-H$_{2}$O$_{2}$-H$_{2}$O wet etching. The linewidth of a GaAs pattern is about 0.4$\mu$m and the depth is 0.5$\mu$m A quantum wires(QWRs) array is well formed on the V-grooved substrate by MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) growth of GaAs/Al$_{0.5}$Ga$_{0.5}$As (50$\AA$/300$\AA$) quantum wells. The formation of QWR array is confirmed by the temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurement. The intensive PL peak with a FWHM of 6meV at 21K shows the high quality of the QWR array.

  • SC-FDMA system uses DFT-spreading method for reducing the PAPR of OFDM signal, which improves the power efficiency. Block type pilot is used in SC-FDMA system. However, there are ICI due to the inevitable phase noise and frequency offset that can be generated from the Doppler frequency and inaccuracy between the transceiver oscillators. This ICI definitely degrades the BER performance. To overcome this problem and estimate the channel efficiently, we like to propose ICI compensation algorithm for the SC-FDMA system with comb type pilot. SLM method is additionally included for the PAPR reduction when pilot is assigned in comb type. Finally, it is confirmed that the ICI due to the phase noise and frequency offset is efficiently compensated by the suggested algorithm.
