  • The impact of the input and output probability distributions on the performance of neural networks to forecast two year peak stream flow (cubic meters per second) is examined for two major river basins of the US. The neural network input consisted of drainage area(square kilometers ) and elevation (meters). When data are normally distributed , the neural networks predict much better than when the data are non-normal and have larger tails in their distributions.

  • The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from - 20 degree to - 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. Unlike common flow down, common flow up vortices moved toward the centerline as they developed and interacted strongly with each other but not with the boundary layer. Spanwise profiles of Stanton number were similar for ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$, but not similar for ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$. The case of ${\beta}=-20^{\circ}\;and\;-35^{\circ}$ showed the two peak Stanton number, but the case of ${\beta}=-45^{\circ}$ showed the only one peak Stanton number.

  • Objectives : To characterize the thermal properties of traditional warm needle and new warm needle with various air flows as an important environmental factor and to suggest the necessity of maintaining suitable environment of clinics to maximize their efficacy. Methods : We measured the temperature characteristics of traditional moxa warm needle and new moxa charcoal warm needle by applying an automatic temperature acquisition system with thermocouples while external various air flows were supplied. Temperatures of two positions at the needle body were measured while a moxa cone burned. Typical temperature characteristics like peak temperature, duration, curve shape and the efficiency of the heat stimuli by heat amount analysis were executed. Results : Both warm needles showed similar temperature curve with an increase in the air flow. Peak temperature and duration of effective heat decreased with the air flow, as shown in indirect moxibustion on garlic. The temperature change pattern by the air flow became more apparent when the total combustion heat was compared with the effective heat. The values from two positions on the needle body were significantly different, showing a distance dependency from the heat source of warm needle acupuncture. Conclusions : Thermal properties of warm needle acupuncture was observed variously with surrounding air flow of 0.0 - 0.7 m/s. It emphasized the importance of environmental control as well as the warm needle itself such as heat source and needle. The latter has already been known to deliver designated heat to subjects. It also indicated the importance of education and skill of the practitioners of warm needle acupuncture.

  • The HPM (High-speed Power Matching) system is an electro-hydraulic control system. It directly controls the swash plate of the pump by selecting four-loop logic based on joystick signals, pump flow, and pressure signal to improve the efficiency and controllability of construction machines. In the NFC (Negative Flow Control) system, a typical pump control system using conventional open center type MCV, the loss is continuously generated by flow through the center bypass line even when the excavator is not in operation. Also, due to the slow response of the pump that indirectly controls the flow rate using the pressure regulator, peak pressure occurs at the start or stop of the operation. Conversely, the HPM system uses an MCV without center-by-pass flow path and the swash plate of a pump for the HPM is controlled by a high-speed proportional flow control valve. As a result, the HPM system minimizes energy loss in standby state of the excavator and enables peak pressure control through rapid electro-hydraulic control of a pump. In this paper, the concept of the HPM system algorithm is introduced and the hydraulic system efficiency is compared with the NFC system using the excavator SAT (System Analysis Tool).

  • The ice-thermal energy storage cooling system has been applied to relief a significant portion of the peak demand of electricity during the daytime in summer. Slurry ice type system is one kind of ice-thermal storage cooling system utilizing cheaper off-peak electricity. This study is experimented to observe an influence of experimental conditions on production characteristics of slurry ice by using reversing flow, which is putting reversing material into test section to disturb ice adhesion. At this experiment, poly propylene ball of dimeter 10 mm was used as reversing material, and ethylene glycol-water solution of 20wt% concentration was used as flow material. The experimental apparatus was constructed of the slurry ice making and storage tank(test section), the brine tank, pumps for ethylene glycol-water solution and brine circulating, a mass flow-meter, data logger for fluid temperature measuring. The experiments were carried out under various conditions, with volumetric flow rate, ball filling rate and air filling rate.

  • Analysis of flow phenomena in a centrifugal compressor impeller has been carried out with numerical simulation to understand the physics of flow near stall. Near stall point, tip leakage flow spills ahead of the leading edge of adjacent blade and other leakage flow passes over the clearance of the adjacent blade instead of rolling up into vortex within the passage. The tip leakage flow at the mid chord of impeller blade impinges against the pressure surface of the adjacent blade and then rolls up into vortex within the passage, which blocks the flow passage and generates viscous loss. The spillage of leakage flow ahead of the adjacent blade generates the recirculation of flow entering the impeller, which causes the power transferred into the flow by the impeller to decrease and blocks the flow passage. Near diffuser hub wall, flow recirculation occurs. As operating point goes to stall point, the core of recirculation approaches the impeller exit The length rises to peak point and then drops with mass flow reduction, while the height steadily rises.

  • To evaluate the acute effects of fine particles on pulmonary function, a longitudinal study was conducted. This study was carried out for the schoolchildren(3rd and 4th grades) living in Inner-Mongolia, China. 113 Chinese children were asked to record their daily levels of peak expiratory flow rate(PEPR) using portable peak flow meter(mini-Wright) for 40 days and 3 time everyday(12 April 2004 to 21 May 2004). The atmospheric concentration of fine particles in study area was also determined everyday during same period. The relationship between dailypeak expiratory flow rate(PEFR) and fine particle levels was analyzed using a mixed linear regression models including gender, age, height, the presence of respiratory symptoms, and daily average relative humidity as extraneous variables. The analysis showed that the increase of fine particle concentrations was negatively associated with the variability in PEPR. The IQR(inter-quartile range) increments of $PM_{10}$ or $PM_{2.5}(66.0{\mu}g/m^3$ and $118.9{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively) were also shown to be related with 1.422L/min(95% Confidence intervals: 0.270 ${\sim}$ 2.574) and 1.214L1min(95% Cl: 0.010 ${\sim}$ 2.418) decline in PEFR.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to analysis on diaphragm thickness and lung function of stroke patients by walking ability. Methods : We recruited thirty-five adults after stroke(20 male, 15 female) for our study. The subjects were divided into two groups; independent walking group(11 male, 9 female) and non-independent walking group(9 male, 6 female). Assessment of diaphragm thickness was performed using ultrasound in B-mode with a 7.5 MHz linea probe. During the experiment, the subject was seated in the chair. All subjects performed maximal expiratory flow maneuvers using a spirometer in order to determine the forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$), forced vital capacity(FVC), peak expiratory flow(PEF) and $FEV_1$/FVC. Chest expansion was measured with a tape-measure placed circumferentially around the chest wall at the xiphoid process. The collected data analyzed by independent t-test. Results : The diaphragm thickness were significant differences between the independent walking and nonindependent walking group. Values of forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at one second, peak expiratory flow in pulmonary function tests were significant differences between the independent walking and non-independent walking group. However, chest expansion were not significant differences in both of the group. Conclusion : This study showed that walking ability of stroke patients have influenced on diaphragm thickness and pulmonary function.

  • Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid gland is one of the most malignant tumors. Recently, DNA ploidy measured by flow cytometry and image analysis has been suggested as an additional useful indicator of tumor behavior. Studies on the occurrence and clinical significance of DNA aneuploidy in anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid are rare. In this study, the pattern of DNA ploidy was measured by image analysis on Papanicolaou stained slides in four cases of anaplastic carcinoma and also measured by flow cytometry using paraffin blocks in two cases. In all cases of anaplastic carcinoma, DNA aneuploidy was found by image analaysis. By flow cytometry, one case had a diploid peak and the other case had an aneuploid peak. According to the above results, we conclude that anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid glands have a high incidence of DNA aneuploidy and image analysis using Papanicolaou stained slides is a useful method in detecting DNA aneuploidy.
