  • The Korean hospital industry is rapidly changing along with the competition among hospitals. Until recently it was easy for hospitals to profit even without efficient management and competitive strategies. However, the increasingly intensive competition endanger their profits but also their survivals. Hospital managers have no choice but to seriously consider competitive management and marketing strategies to remain alive and prosper. This study introduces a useful methodology--perception map drawn using multidimensional scaling--for developing competitive strategies, and illustrates its application to developing a perception map of 9 Seoul-based general hospitals. We also suggest the concepts and examples of positioning strategies and patient satisfaction management system. One of the interesting findings is that the Samsung medical center which opened less than a year ago is ranked first in most aspects such as kindness, facilities, waiting time, and parking, and the second in clinical performance just after the Seoul National University Hospital.

The subjects of the study were 365 senior nursing students. The data was analyzed by SPSS PC 19.0 program. 1) The mean scores of perception and performance by student nurse's on protecting behavior of the medical information were $4.39{\pm}0.40$ and $3.71{\pm}0.57$. 2) The perception on protecting behavior of the medical information was heavily dependent on the following age. 3) The performance on protecting behavior of the medical information was heavily dependent on the following career interests and work unit. 4) There was a positive correlation between the perception and performance about the protecting behavior of the medical information. The results showed the statistically significant partial correlation between the perception and performance. Therefore, it is suggested to apply the concrete education program to enhance the perception in order to improve the performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to research the perception and performance of patient private information protection(PPIP) of 76 nursing students with clinical practice of 18 weeks. The mean score of perception on PPIP (4.62 points/5 points) was significantly higher than the performance(3.84 points/5 points). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between perception and performance. In the future, it is necessary to study the interdisciplinary convergence study to understand the factors affecting the perception and performance of PPIP of nursing students and to Develope and apply of PPIP education program for nursing students. Also it is necessary to seek joint plans between medical institutions and universities to improve the perception and performance of PPIP.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study lies in investigating nursing and medical staff perceptions on the importance of surgical patient safety protocol, teamwork, and patient safety culture, and how their grasp of the factors affects the degree of their performance of the protocol. Methods: A survey was conducted on 249 nurses and medical staff participating in the operating rooms of one higher general hospital in Seoul, using a 5-point scale self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were used. Results: Operating room nurses yielded the highest scores on both the importance of the patient safety protocol and its performance. In patient safety culture, the operating medical staff yielded significantly higher scores than those of operating room nurses. Perception of the importance of the patient safety protocol and teamwork had a significant effect on the nurses' complete performance of the protocol. Conclusion: It is important to create a safety culture, where all the staff can actively and freely communicate with one another through team-based training programs. By enhancing teamwork and patient safety culture, it will be possible to establish the surgical patient safety protocol and to improve the performance of the protocol by health professionals.

  • This study aimed to investigate the awareness and performance of safety in operating room nurses. There were 161 operating room nurses from eight general hospitals included for analysis in this study. The data were analyzed with t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and Scheffe's test. The results show that their perception of patient safety was 3.33 out of a total of 5 points. Moreover, the score of safety management activity for patients in the operating room was 4.28 out of 5 points. As the perception of patient safety in operating room nurses was significantly correlated with their safety management activities, nurses with higher awareness of patient safety were found to have higher degree of performance of safety management activities. In conclusion, to improve safety management activities, open discussion about patient safety should be encouraged and periodic education regarding patient safety should be implemented for operating room nurses to increase the perception of patient safety.

  • Background: The objective of this study was to explore patient family's evaluation of emergency department (ED) service satisfaction and to compare these with ED staff perception of patient family's evaluation. Methods: Based on two surveys of the National Emergency Medical Center: the 2008 National Survey for Recognition and Satisfaction towards Emergency Medical Services and the 2008 Opinion Survey of Emergency Medical Service Providers, satisfaction gaps among physicians, nurses, and patient family were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis tests and Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests. Furthermore, the factors associated with satisfaction of emergency medical service were identified by ordinal logistic regression models. Results: There were statistically significant gaps among physicians, nurses, and patient family in overall satisfaction with ED visit, length of stay in ED, enough explanation, physicians/nurses kindness, and ED facilities. Age and income in the patient family model, the number of beds in hospital, job satisfaction and year of service in the physicians model, and the number of beds in hospital, job satisfaction and the number of patients per duty hour in the nurses model were statistically significant factors associated with evaluation/ perception of ED service satisfaction. Conclusion: Patient satisfaction is an important indicator of the quality of care and service delivery in the ED. To improve and understand satisfaction in ED service, a dyadic view of the evaluation of service quality and satisfaction-that is, from the perspectives of both the patient and the emergency medical service providers-should be concerned.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to elucidate clinical nurses' ethics germane to information literacy and perception of patient data privacy and thus help nurses to develop more positive and consolidated ethical values. Methods: For this study a descriptive survey design was used. Participants were 142 nurses who worked in a hospital and completed self-report questionnaires. Data were collected from August 1 to 5, 2016 and were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS 22.0. Results: Ethical value had a positive correlation with information needs (r=.25, p=.002) in information literacy as well as in direct patient care (r=.27, p=.001), shift work (r=.20, p=.016), patient information management (r=.39, p<.001), and communication (r=.24, p=.004) in perception of patient data privacy. Patient information management, educational background, and age were significant variables predicting the level of ethical values and accounted for 21% of the variance. Conclusion: Ethical values education with particular emphasize on managing patient information should be encouraged for nurses who are younger and have a lower education level. Findings indicate a need for education programs to guide clinical nurses to utilize appropriate information when solving ethical challenges in every day nursing practice.
