Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs/HERs) and downstream signaling pathways have been implicated in the pathogenesis of several malignancies including breast cancer and its resistance to treatment with chemotherapeutic drugs. Consequently, several monoclonal antibodies as well as small molecule inhibitors targeting these pathways have emerged as therapeutic tools in the recent past. However, studies have shown that utilizing these molecules in combination with chemotherapy has yielded only limited success. This review describes the current understanding of EGFRs/HERs and associated signaling pathways in relation to development of breast cancer and responses to various cancer treatments in the hope of pointing to improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Also, we review the role of breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) in disease and the potential to target these cells.

Despite the fact that the phenomenal success of the classical model in phonology in terms of a small set of binary atomic primitives has encouraged the use of criterical features in the characterization of syntactic and semantic categories, cognitive linguists have recently found many evidences against it and proposed a valid alternative like prototype approach to classical model of linguistic categorization. In this paper the examples with prototype effects are shown in phonology, morphology, and syntax. In phonology there is no clear-cut borderline in initial sounds such as / r, m, n, v, ${\eth}$, z, w. j, b. d, g / and between vowels and consonants. In morphology family resemblance is shown between strong verbs and past tenses. In syntax there is no borderline among various kinds of sentences such as declarative, command, WH-question, yes-no question, etc.

The contraception practice rate in Korea has steadily increased from 9% in 1964 to 72% in 1987. Accordingly, natural increase rate of population declined from 28.4 per 1,000 in 1964 to 12.4 per 1,000 in 1987. Notably in recent years, the acceptance of surgical contraception services has sharply increased in this country. Now the author analyzes various factors influencing successful vasectomy and vasovasostomy based on his experience in performing more than 8,000 vasectomies and 1,000 vasovasostomies during the past 25 years. These various factors consist of preoperative screening interview, surgical vasectomy technique, vas irrigation technique, open-ended vasectomy, complications from vasectomy, sperm granuloma formation, spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis after vasectomy, immunological consequences after vasectomy, prostatic diseases and vasectomy, late post-vasectomy syndrome, psychological effects after vasectomy, and success rates of vasovasostomy. Besides, the author makes more comments on the results of the clinical trials on new approaches to reversible vas occlusion technique with a new device of Intravasal Thread and to reversible suppression of spermatogenesis with long-acting sex hormones.

Since the railway passenger services have been recognized as important factor for success in railway, electrical energy consumption in railway station for high quality service has greatly increased. Furthermore, the number of the private railway station has gradually increased. Therefore, the operation conditions for railway power distribution system is dramatically changed in comparison with the past. So, this paper proposes the optimal construction method for railway power distribution system considering economical efficiency and the reliability of power supply to establish the railway power distribution system standard for the future railway industry.

To prevent low yields in the semiconductor industry is crucial to the success of that industry. However, to prevent low yields is difficult because of too many factors to affect yield variation and their complex relation in the semiconductor manufacturing process. This study presents a new efficient detection methodology for detecting abnormal yields including high and low yields, which can forecast the yield level of a production unit (namely a lot) based on yield-related feature variables' behaviors. In the methodology, we use C5.0 to identify the yield-related feature variables that are the combination of correlated process variables associated with yield, use SOM (Self-Organizing Map) neural networks to extract and classify significant patterns of past abnormal yield lots and finally use C5.0 to generate classification rules for detecting abnormal yield lot. We illustrate the effectiveness of our methodology using a semiconductor manufacturing company's field data.

Most companies in the IT service industry have suffered from low profitability although this industry is highly value added, which may result in losing the competitiveness of the industry. The purpose of this study is to identify the influencing factors on the profit improvement rate of IT service projects and suggest how to improve the profit improvement rate, thus recovering the competitiveness of the IT service industry. The 273 IT service projects conducted by an IT service company in Korea during the past three years were analyzed and the project managers who performed these projects responded to the questionnaire developed in this study. The result from the analysis of data collected shows that the influencing factors on the profit improvement rate of IT service projects include scheduling, experience in similar projects, the leadership of project leaders, the level of team skills, relationship with clients, and clients support.

Due to the rise of customer's alertness about fresh foods to health, in the past few years, the consumption of fresh food has increased sturdily. The use of gas scavengers is the most appropriate packaging technologies for fresh, fresh-cut produces and in ready to eat products. The gas absorber/scavenger has ability to protect or stabilize the wanted properties and shelf life of food. The success of gas absorbers in food depends on many parameters such as types of foods, storage temperature, relative humidity, initial gas concentration, and the characteristics of package materials. In this review article, we focus on the most recent research trends in gas scavenging systems used in food packaging, future trends. Intense research from industry and engineers remains important to the development of gas scavenging package that fulfill consumer requirements, enhance product quality, and offer environmentally friendly design and cost-effective application.

It is hypothesized that changing from conventional to organic production is an investment because specific capital items are necessary for such a step. It is further hypothesized that in view of the limited experience and the very restricted availability of extension materials such investment is particularly prone to risk. The conversion to organic farming has proven to be an economically interesting alternative for a large portion of the converted farms in the past. This contribution will consider the question of which factors influence the success of organic farming. A discussion of the most important consequences for politics and agricultural practice conclude this paper, drawn on the important factors identified in the study.

There has been continuous effort to achieve total automation of the power plants. But due to complexity, nonlinearities and time-varying properties of the system, no success has been reported if conventional and/or modern control theories are applied. In spite of this, the start-up and shutdown operations are successfully performed by skilled human operators who are able to utilize a great wealth of knowledge and past experiences. In this paper, in order to automate the shutdown operation of power plants, it is proposed that the operation be performed by a more efficient method than the current used, through dividing the total process into several subprocesses, introducing checkpoints, and using fuzzy logic. For this, fuzzy logic controllers and fuzzy decision-makers are designed and the validity is shown by simulation via a set of piecewise continuous shutdown models.

In recent decades, scientists have had great success identifying specific loci that contribute to the variability of agronomically important phenotypes. But, while loci of large-effect remain the simplest and most commonly identified in genomic studies, mounting evidence suggests that a substantial proportion of crop evolution is driven by loci of small effect. In this talk, results demonstrating that large-effect loci are not the primary driver of maize evolution will be presented, along with a new method to test quantitative traits for evidence of past selection. By applying this this method to a maize breeding population, we show that agronomic traits important for breeding are often dictated by loci of small effect. The implications of these results for driving crop improvement will be discussed, including their potential application to breeding protocols that anticipate global climate change.
