In this research, a slotted patch antenna sensor is designed for wireless strain and crack sensing. An off-the-shelf RFID (radiofrequency identification) chip is adopted in the antenna sensor design for signal modulation. The operation power of the RFID chip is captured from wireless reader interrogation signal, so the sensor operation is completely battery-free (passive) and wireless. For strain and crack sensing of a structure, the antenna sensor is bonded on the structure surface like a regular strain gage. Since the antenna resonance frequency is directly related with antenna dimension, which deforms when strain occurs on the structural surface, the deformation/strain can be correlated with antenna resonance frequency shift measured by an RFID reader. The slotted patch antenna sensor performance is first evaluated through mechanics-electromagnetics coupled simulation. Extensive experiments are then conducted to validate the antenna sensor performance, including tensile and compressive strain sensing, wireless interrogation range, and fatigue crack sensing.

Passive microwave remote sensing technique have shown great potential for mon monitoring regional/global surface soil moisture. Given a single measurement at dual polarization/single frequency/single view angle, a strategic approach to artificially generating multiple microwave brightness temperatures is presented. And then the statistically generated microwave brightness temperature data are applied to the inverse algorithm, which mainly relies on a physically based microwave emission model and an advanced single-criterion multi-parameter optimization technique, to simultaneously retrieve soil moisture and vegetation characteristics. . The procedure is tested with dual polarized Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) over two different cover sites in Oklahoma and Beltsville field experimental data. The retrieval results are analyzed and show excellent performance.

Interference can cause serious problems in our daily life. Traditional ways in localizing a target can't work well when it comes to the source of interference for it may take an uncooperative or even resistant attitude towards localization. To tackle this issue, we take the BPSN (Binary Proximity Sensor Networks) and consider a passive way in this paper. No cooperation is needed and it is based on simple sensor node suitable for large-scale deployment. By dividing the sensing field into different patches, when enough patches are formed, good localization accuracy can be achieved with high resolution. Then we analyze the relationship between sensing radius and localization error, we find that in a finite region where edge effect can't be ignored, the trend between sensing radius and localization error is not always consistent. Through theoretical analysis and simulation, we explore to determine the best sensing radius to achieve high localization accuracy.
The goal of this paper is to develop a self localization of mobile robot using UHF RFID landmark. We present landmark, a location sensing archetype system that uses UHF Radio Frequency Identification (UHF RFID) technology for locating objects inside buildings. The major advantage of landmark is that it improves the overall accuracy of locating objects by utilizing the concept of reference tags. Based on experimental analysis, we demonstrate that passive UHF RFID is a viable and cost-effective candidate for indoor location sensing. We conduct a series of experiments to evaluate performance of the positioning of the landmark System. In the standard setup, we place RF Reader which has two antennas and 25 tags in our lab. This research uses the assumption-based coordinates (ABC) algorithm[3] for determining the localization of robot. Also, we show how Radio Frequency Identification (UHF RFID) can be used in robot-assisted indoor navigation for the visually impaired. The experiments illustrate that passive UHF RFID tags can act as reliable landmark that trigger local navigation behaviors to achieve global navigation objectives.

Aperture synthesis with platform motion has been presented as a useful tool to achieve the high spatial resolution imaging. Using a motion induced synthetic aperture radiometer (MISAR), a passive microwave image can be achieved with a small number of antennas. Moreover, the MISAR is capable of imaging better than the case without motion, using the same configuration of antenna array. With a platform motion, visibility can be sampled more efficiently, and as a result the imaging performance of the MISAR shows higher quality than the case without platform motion. In this paper, the advantage of MISAR is demonstrated experimentally. Using a laboratory model of inteferometric radiometer, the point source images are obtained under the condition with platform motion and without platform motion. In the experimental results, the point source response of the MISAR shows better quality of sidelobe level and beam efficiency than the case without platform motion.

A study on the control of free vibration and stability characteristics of rotating hollow circular shafts subjected to compressive axial forces is presented in this paper. Both passive structural tailoring technique and active control scheme via collocated piezoelectric sensing and actuation are used in the study Gyroscopic and centrifugal forces combined with the compressive axial force contribute to the occurrence of divergence and flutter instabilities of the rotating shaft. The dual methodology based on the passive and active control schemes shows a high degree of efficiency toward postponement of these instabilities and expansion of the domain of stability of the system. The structural model of the shaft is based on an advanced thin-walled beam structure that includes the non-classical effects of transverse shear, anisotropy of constituent materials and rotatory inertia.
This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of ground-based remote sensing for the estimation of rice yield and application rate of N-fertilizer during growing season. Dongjin-1, Korean cultivar of rice was planted on May 30, 2006 and harvested on October 9, 2006. Chlorophyll content and LAI (leaf area index) were measured using Minolta SPAD-502 and AccuPAR model LP-80, respectively. Reflectance indices were determined with passive sensors using sunlight and four types of active sensors using modulated light, respectively. Reflectance indices and growth rate were measured three times from 29 days to 87 days after rice plating and at harvesting day. The result showed that values of growing characteristics and reflectance indices were highly correlated. Growing characteristics to show significant correlation with reflectance indices were in order of followings: fresh weight > N uptake > dry weight > height > No. of tiller > N content. Chlorophyll contents measured by chlorophyll meter (SPAD 502) showed high correlation with nitrogen concentration (r=$0.743^{**}$), although the correlation coefficients between remote sensing data and nitrogen concentration were higher. LAI was highly correlated with dry weight (r=$0.931^{**}$), but relationship between LAI and nitrogen concentration (r=$0.505^*$) was relatively low. The data of CC-passive sensor were negatively correlated with those of the near-infrared. NDVI correlation coefficients found more useful to identify the growth characteristics rather than data from single wavelength. Both passive sensor and active sensor were highly significantly correlated with growth characteristics. Consequently, quantifying the growth characteristics using reflectance indices of ground-based remote sensing could be a useful tool to determine the application rate of N fertilizer non-destructively and in real-time.

A wearable sensing ECG T-shirt for ubiquitous vital signs sensing is proposed. The sensor system consists of a signal processing board and capacitive sensing electrodes which together enable measurement of an electrocardiogram (ECG) on the human chest with minimal discomfort. The capacitive sensing method was employed to prevent direct ECG measurement on the skin and also to provide maximum convenience to the user. Also, low power integrated circuits (ICs) and passive electrodes were employed in this research to reduce the power consumption of the entire system. Small flexible electrodes were placed into cotton pockets and affixed to the interior of a worn tight NIKE Pro combat T-shirt. Appropriate signal conditioning and processing were implemented to remove motion artifacts. The entire system was portable and consumed low power compared to conventional ECG devices. The ECG signal obtained from a 24 yr. old male was comparable to that of an ECG simulator.

The novel metal position detection method is proposed where conventional techniques, in high temperature, moisture and particle environment, are not able to be applied. It is known that electronic devices, utilizing microwave, ultrasonic or optical technique, are hard to apply for sensing application where temperature is exceeding above 300 degree centigrade. Metal position detection technique, which was consisted with passive elements facing hot sensing surface, utilizing electromagnetic wave was investigated, and the metal detection sensitivity was measured by varying sensor frequency and sensing distance. Measurement result in laboratory test set-up showed position measurement resolution up to 1mm, when distance between two sensing elements were 500mm, and possibility to measure position of hot metal sheet having very high surface temperature.

There are on-going efforts to utilize guided waves for structural damage detection. Active sensing devices such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) have been widely used for guided wave generation and sensing. In addition, there has been increasing interest in adopting wireless sensing to structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. One of major challenges in wireless SHM is to secure power necessary to operate the wireless sensors. However, because active sensing devices demand relatively high electric power compared to conventional passive sensors such as accelerometers and strain gauges, existing battery technologies may not be suitable for long-term operation of the active sensing devices. To tackle this problem, a new wireless power transmission paradigm has been developed in this study. The proposed technique wirelessly transmits power necessary for PZT-based guided wave generation using laser and optoelectronic devices. First, a desired waveform is generated and the intensity of the laser source is modulated accordingly using an electro-optic modulator (EOM). Next, the modulated laser is wirelessly transmitted to a photodiode connected to a PZT. Then, the photodiode converts the transmitted light into an electric signal and excites the PZT to generate guided waves on the structure where the PZT is attached to. Finally, the corresponding response from the sensing PZT is measured. The feasibility of the proposed method for wireless guided wave generation has been experimentally demonstrated.
