  • This study investigated characteristics of children's coping behaviors in the context of perceived controllability of stress in hassles with parent(s), friend-alienation, friend-conflict, and in learning situations. The subjects were 489 sixth grade children selected from seven elementary schools in Seoul. Statistical analysis was by ANOVA, Scheffe' test, and MANOVA. Major findings were that (1) Active, passive, aggressive, and avoidant coping differed by perceived controllability of stress in all 4 stress situations. The children who perceived a higher level of controllability were more active, and less passive, aggressive, and avoidant in coping with each hassle. (2) Perceived controllability was higher in learning related than in friend-conflict situations. Active, passive, and social support seeking coping behavior was higher in learning related stress situations than in friend-conflict situations. Avoidant coping behavior was lower in learning related than in friend-conflict situations.

  • Flow-Accelerated Corrosion Behavior of SA106 Gr.C steel in room temperature alkaline solution simulating the CANDU primary water condition was studied using Rotating Cylinder Electrode. Systems of RCE were set up and electrochemical parameters were applied at various rotating speeds. Corrosion current density decreased up to pH 10.4 then it increased rapidly at higher pH. This is due to the increasing tendency of cathodic and anodic exchange half-cell current. Corrosion potential shifted slightly upward with rotating velocity. Passive film was formed from pH 9.8 by the mechanism of step oxidation and the subsequent precipitation of ferrous species into hydroxyl compound. Above pH 10.4, the film formation process was active and the film became stable. Corrosion current density showed increment in pH 6.98 with the rotating velocity, while it soon saturated from 1000 rpm above pH 9.8. This seems that activation process which represents formation of passive film on the bare metal surface controls the entire corrosion process

  • Many advanced reactor designs rely on passive systems to fulfill safety functions during accident sequences. These systems depend heavily on boundary conditions to induce a motive force, meaning the system can fail to operate as intended because of deviations in boundary conditions, rather than as the result of physical failures. Furthermore, passive systems may operate in intermediate or degraded modes. These factors make passive system operation difficult to characterize within a traditional probabilistic framework that only recognizes discrete operating modes and does not allow for the explicit consideration of time-dependent boundary conditions. Argonne National Laboratory has been examining various methodologies for assessing passive system reliability within a probabilistic risk assessment for a station blackout event at an advanced small modular reactor. This paper provides an overview of a passive system reliability demonstration analysis for an external event. Considering an earthquake with the possibility of site flooding, the analysis focuses on the behavior of the passive Reactor Cavity Cooling System following potential physical damage and system flooding. The assessment approach seeks to combine mechanistic and simulation-based methods to leverage the benefits of the simulation-based approach without the need to substantially deviate from conventional probabilistic risk assessment techniques. Although this study is presented as only an example analysis, the results appear to demonstrate a high level of reliability of the Reactor Cavity Cooling System (and the reactor system in general) for the postulated transient event.

  • The cathodic hydrogen evolution ability of different pure metals and their long term galvanic corrosion behavior with pure Mg were investigated. The hydrogen evolution ability of pure Ti, Al, Sn and Zr is weak, while that of Fe, W, Cr, and Co is very strong. Initial polarization test could not completely reveal the cathodic behavior of the tested metals during long term corrosion. The cathodic hydrogen evolution ability may vary significantly in the long term galvanic tests for different metals, especially for Al whose cathodic current density reduced to 1/50 of the initial value. The anodic polarization shows that Al and Sn as alloying elements are supposed to provide relatively good passive effect for Mg alloy, while Ag can provide a slight passive effect and Zn has little passive effect.

  • In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on the compressive behavior of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) and concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns with active and passive confinement. To create active confinement in the STCC and CFST specimens, an innovative method was used in this study, in which by applying pressure on the fresh concrete, the steel tube was laterally pretensioned and the concrete core was compressed simultaneously. Of the benefits of this technique are improving the composite column behavior, without the use of additives and without the need for vibration, and achieving high prestressing levels. To achieve lower and higher prestressing levels, short and long term pressures were applied to the specimens, respectively. Nineteen STCC and CFST specimens in three groups of passive, short-term active, and long-term active confinement were subjected to axial compression, and their mechanical properties including the compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and axial strain were evaluated. The results showed that the proposed method of prestressing the STCC columns led to a significant increase in the compressive strength (about 60%), initial modulus of elasticity (about 130%) as well as a significant reduction in the axial strain (about 45%). In the CFST columns, the prestressing led to a considerable increase in the compressive strength, a small effect on the initial and secant modulus of elasticity and an increase in the axial strain (about 55%). Moreover, increased prestressing levels negligibly affected the compressive strength of STCCs and CFSTs but slightly increased the elastic modulus of STCCs and significantly decreased that of CFSTs.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between lifestyles and clothing purchasing behavior. The questionnaire was administered to 644 females aged 30∼40 in Taegu during April 21 to April 26 of 1997. Data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, factor analysis, reliability test, MANOVA, and ANDVA by suing SPss package. 1. The lifestyles of the respondents were classified into fived types such as consumption oriented, economics-oriented, achievement-oriented, family-oriented, and conservative-oriented type. And clothing purchasing behavior was classified into six categories such as individuality, convenience, economy, ostentation, decorums, and practicality. 2. The results of lifestyle and clothing purchasing behavior analysis were as follows ; 1) All of five positive groups of consumption·economics·achievement·family and conservative-oriented type had an inclination for economy and individuality. And some differences were found according to the consumers, interest even in the same lifestyle. 2) The positive groups of consumption oriented type thought much of individuality and ostentation but on the other hand the passive group thought much of practicality. 3) The positive groups of consumption oriented, and family-oriented types except economics oriented and conservative oriented types took up a strong attitude toward ostentation, and ostentation was found in passive group of the conservative-oriented type. 4) The positive group of economics-oriented, achievement-oriented and conservative-oriented types except consumption-oriented and family-oriented types had great concern for practicality in the case of clothing purchasing behavior. But also the passive group of conservative-oriented types had an inclination for practicality. 5) Generally five types of lifestyles and clothing purchasing behavior showed that all types had the greatest concern for economy and individuality, and common for practicality and ostentation. And all of five types had partial concern for convenience and showed no differences for decorums.

  • The composition and semiconducting properties of the passive films formed on Ni- (15, 30)Cr-5Mo alloys in pH 8.5 buffer solution were examined. The depth concentration profile of passive films formed on Ni-(15, 30)Cr-5Mo in pH 8.5 buffer solution showed that Mo enhances the enrichment of Cr. The Mott-Schottky plot for the passive film on Ni-(15, 30)Cr- 5Mo closely resembled that for the film on Cr, whereas those for the less Cr-enriched film on Mo-free alloys showed similar behavior to that for the film on Ni. The acceptor density was reduced by increasing Cr content in Ni-(15, 30)Cr-(0, 5)Mo alloys, but addition of Mo considerably increased the acceptor density.

  • The anodic polarization behavior of equiatomic TiNi shape memory alloy with pure titanium as a reference material was investigated by means of open circuit potential measurement and potentiodynamic polarization technique. And the structure of passive films on TiNi intermetallic compounds was also conducted using AES and ESCA. While the dissolved Ni(II) ion did not affect the dissolution rate and passivation of TiNi alloy, the dissolved Ti(III) ion was oxidated to Ti(IV) ion on passivated TiNi surface at passivation potential. It has also been found that the Ti(IV) ion increases the steady state potential, and passivates TiNi alloy at a limited concentration of Ti(IV) ion. The analysis by AES showed that passive film of TiNi alloy was composed of titanium oxide and nickel oxide, and the content of titanium was three times higher than that of nickel in outer side of passive film. According to the ESCA analysis, the passive film was composed of $TiO_2$ and NiO. It seems reasonable to suppose that NiO could act as unstabilizer to the oxide film and could be dissolved preferentially. Therefore, nickel oxide contained in the passive film may promote the dissolution of the film, and it could be explained the reason of higher pitting susceptibility of TiNi alloy than pure Ti.
