  • The oil in mackerel muscle was extracted using an environment friendly solvent, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-$CO_2$) at a semibatch flow extraction process and an n-hexane. The SC-$CO_2$ was maintained at a temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ under pressures ranging from 15 to 25 MPa. The flow rate of $CO_2$ (27 g/min) was constant during the entire 2 h extraction period. The fatty acid composition of the oil was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). Significant concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) acid were present in the SC-$CO_2$ extracted oil. The oil extracted using SC-$CO_2$ exhibited increased stability compared with n-haxane extracted oil. Particles of mackerel oil together with the biodegradable polymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG) were formed using a gas saturated solution process (PGSS) with SC-$CO_2$ in a thermostatted stirred vessel. Different temperatures ($45-55^{\circ}C$), pressures (15-25 MPa) and a nozzle size $400{\mu}m$ were used for PGSS with a 1 h reaction time. The stability of mackerel oil in the particles did not changed significantly.

  • Well-defined, monodispersed hollow ZnO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot solution method at room temperature. Hollow ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated using polystyrene nanoparticles as seed particles. The removal of core particles via solvent extraction yields hollow nanoparticles. The structures and morphologies of the obtained products were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The formation mechanism of the hollow structure of the ZnO nanoparticles was also investigated. The technique developed here is expected to be useful in the preparation other metal oxides and hollow architectures.

  • In order to Investigate the extraction mechanism of barley tea in cylindrical packed column, pilot plant scale packed column was designed and constructed. And extraction conditions for steady flow in the packed column were searched. The main results of this study are as follows ; 1. Circulation of the stock barley tea before the extraction running was indispensable In consideration of inequality, gas, particles existed in packed bed. Solid-liquid equilibrium was initially maintained after the circulation. 2. Flow direction of solvent must be up-flow for maintaining the constant bed height and flow rate during the extraction. Paessure drop in pucked bed was similar to decrease ratio of extract concentration. 3. The porosity of packed bed was in the range of 0.24∼0.36 according to the particle sloe. And it was decreased as the particle size became smaller.

  • In this study, the mechanisms on ultrasonication enhanced metals extraction were investigated compared with the conventional washing technique. We hypothesized the mechanisms on enhanced extraction of ultrasonication: ultrasonication increased the temperature of soil slurry and decreased average particle size of soil due to breakdown of soil aggregate. Actually, the ultrasonication increased the temperature of soil slurry to $60^{\circ}C$ in this study, and the increase in the temperature enhanced the metal extraction to 15-20% even in the conventional simple mixing. The conventional washing technique decreased average size of soil particles because of breakdown of soil aggregate, and the ultrasonication decreased the size more than that of washing. The breakdown of soil aggregate improved the contact between metals and washing agent, which enhanced the extraction of metals in the ultrasonication. Therefore, we concluded that the main mechanisms of ultrasonication are increase in the temperature and breakdown of the soil aggregate. Finally, the ultrasonicaiton increased the extractability of metals upto 40% compared to conventional washing technique.

  • The digital HPTV velocity field measurement consists of four steps: recording, numerical reconstruction, particle extraction and velocity extraction. In the velocity extraction process, we improved PTV algorithm to extract the displacement of particle each placed in 3D space. Because a digital recording device was used, some factors such as a spatial resolution, numerical aperture, and particle concentration can affect the performance of the digital HPTV. Especially, a particle concentration ($C_{o}$) affected tile reconstruction efficiency in numerical reconstruction and particle extraction process. In this paper, the reconstruction efficiency was analyzed experimentally with different particle concentration. Optimal reconstruction efficiency was shown in the range of $C_{o}$=$13\∼15$ particles/$mm^{3}$.

  • The digital HPTV(holographic particle tracking velocimetry) velocity field measurement system consists of four steps: recording, numerical reconstruction, particle extraction and velocity extraction. In the velocity extraction process, we improved the two frame PTV algorithm to extract 3-D displacement information of each particle located in 3D space. Because a digital CCD camera was used, some factors such as spatial resolution, numerical aperture, and particle concentration influenced on the performance of the developed digital HPTV. Especially, the particle concentration $(C_o)$ affected the reconstruction efficiency and recovery ratio in the numerical reconstruction and particle extraction procedure. In this paper, the effect of particle concentration reconstruction efficiency and recovery ratio were analyzed experimentally. Optimal particle concentration was found to be in the range of $C_o=11{\sim}17\;particles/mm^3$.

  • The ultimate goal of periodontal treatment has been to facilitate regeneration of diseased periodontal tissues, destroyed by inflammatory periodontal disease. Various implant materials have been used to restore the alveolar bone defects. Of the various materials, porous replamineform hydroxyapatite (PHA) has good biocompatibility when placed in a bone tissue, and maintains alveolar ridge for a long period. Decalcified freeze dried bone(DFDB) has been widely used in alveolar bone defects because of its conformity and high osteogenic potential. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of PHA and DFDB on the regeneration of the alveolar bone between fresh extraction sockets and periodontally involved extraction sockets. Experimental periodontitis was induced by the ligation of orthodontic elastic threads after surgically creating periodontal defects on the premolars on the right side of 2 adult dogs for 8 weeks. Following the extraction of each tooth, PHA and DFDB were inserted in the extraction sockets. In control group 1, PHA was inserted in the fresh extraction sockets, and in control group 2, DFDB was inserted. In experimental group 1, PHA was inserted in the periodontally involved extraction sockets, and in experimental group 2, DFDB was inserted. After 20 weeks, the specimens were prepared and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin stain for the light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows. 1. No inflammation associated with implant materials was evident in any of the groups. 2. DFDB was completely resorbed, PHA was remained in the extraction sockets in the control and experimental groups. 3. In control group 1 and experimental group 1, extraction sockets were not completely filled with new bone. However, original forms of alveolar crests were maintained in control group 2 and experimental group 2. 4. In control group 1 and exprimental group 1, PHA particles surrounded with many giant cells were well tolerated by the fibrous connective tissues in the coronal part of the socket, In the inferior part of the socket, PHA particles were incorporated into the new bone. In both control group 2 and experimental group 2, DFDB was replaced by newly remodeled bone. 5. No differences of degree of new bone formation were evident between control and experimental groups.

  • A simple method of fabricating out-coupling structures was demonstrated via solution-processing to enhance light extraction from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Scattering layers were easily obtained by spin-coating an $SiO_2$ sol solution that contained $TiO_2$ particles. By introducing the scattering layer and the solution-processible corrugated structure as internal and external extraction layers, the OLEDs showed increased external quantum efficiency without a change in the electroluminescence spectrum compared to conventional devices. Using these solution-processible out-coupling structures, nearly all-solution-processed OLEDs with enhanced light extraction could be fabricated. The light extraction enhancement is attributed to the suppression by the out-coupling structures of the light-trapping that arose at the interface of the glass substrate and the air.

  • The placement of different graft materials and/or the use of occlusive membranes to cover the extraction socket entrance are techniques aimed at reducing alveolar ridge resorption and enhancing bone formation. However, in spite of its clinical advantage, the use of graft materials in fresh extraction socket has been questioned because particles of the grafted material have been found in alveolar sockets with fibrous union. The purposes of this study were to evaluate whether alveolar ridge resorption following tooth extraction could be reduced and bone formation could be enhanced by the application of absorbable gelatin spongy or gelatin spongy soaked with platelet rich plasma(PRP) used as a space filler in clinical and radiographic aspects. Eighty patients who were scheduled for extraction of both third molars were participated and carried out by one experienced surgeon. Following extraction of teeth, one extracted socket were treated with gelatin spongy as an experimental group A and the other were treated with gelatin spongy and PRP as an experimental group B. The routine extracted socket were healed without any treatment as a control group. From the period of extraction to 12 weeks postoperatively, we examined the clinical course and radiographic evaluation on socket at regular interval. Both experimental groups showed faster wound healing process than control clinically. Vertical gingival height of the extraction socket were less changed statistically in both experimental groups than control. The horizontal width change of the extraction socket were not significant statistically in any group. Radiographic changes of the alveolar bone height were less changed in both experimental groups and bone density were showed higher than control. There were a little difference between experimental group A and B. In conclusion, absorbable gelatin sponge and with PRP were considered as having preservation effects of extraction socket and stimulation of bone formation process after extraction.

  • Atmospheric particulates were collected at a site near the front gate of the Yonsei University using nine stages Andersen air sampler and the distribution of seasonal particle size was investigated. Rubber, Pb and Zn contents of the collected particulates in each stage were determined. Particle size distribution of atmospheric particulate, which was made by concentration distribution curve method, was usually divided into two groups, course (particles larger than 1 - 2 $\mu m in diameter$) and fine (particles smaller than 1 - 2 \mu m in diameter$) groups, regardless of sampling period. More than 80 percent of the total rubber contents in atmospheric particulates were larger than $5 \mu m$ in diameter, meaning that most of rubber particles were originated from tire tread. After benzene extraction for 4 hrs, the extracts were analyzed by Curie-point pyrolysis gas chromatography for rubber content. Pb and Zn contents were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The annual average concentration of rubber particles was $4.2 \mu g/m^3$, which corresponded to 2.2% of the annual average total suspended particulates. Average concentration of styrene brtadiene rubber was about five times that of natural rubber. Annual average concentrations of Pb and Zn were $1.2 \mu g/m^3 and 0.4 \mu g/m^3$ respectively, which corresponded to about 0.7% and 0.2% of the annual average total suspended particulates.
