This study investigated effect of particle sizes of polymer binders for digital textile printing(DTP) pigment inks on touch of fabrics. The polymer binders were synthesized via miniemulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA), butyl acrylate(BA), N-ethylolacrylamide(NEA) and methacrylic acid(MAA). The prepared binders were applied to black pigment inks and those black pigment inks were used to dye cotton fabrics. Then, color strength, rubbing fastness, stiffness, surface and bending properties of the dyed fabrics were investigated. Depending on the particle size of the polymer binder used, color strength, friction fastness, stiffness, surface and bending properties change. Generally, the larger the particle size of the polymer binder, the softer properties.
The numerical simulation of the particle dispersion in the vortical flows provides insight into the mechanism of particle-fluid interaction. The simulation results show that the mixing layers are characterized by the large-scale vortical structures undergoing pairing process. The particle dispersion is strongly influenced by the large-scale structures and the particle sizes. The analysis shows that the mixing layers grows like a step-function.
A cascade impactor is a multistage impaction device used to separate airborne particles into aerodynamic size classes. A micro-orifice impactor uses micro-orifice nozzles to extend the cut sizes of the lower stages to as small as 0.05 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter without resorting to low pressures or creating excessive pressure drops across the impactor stages. In this work, the phenomenon of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles was experimentally investigated for a commercial micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). It was observed, using an optical microscope, that the micro-orifice nozzles of the final stages were partially clogged due to particle deposition during the aerosol sampling. Therefore the pressure drops across the nozzles were higher than the nominal values given by the manufacturer. To examine the effect of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles, the particle collection efficiency of the MOUDI was evaluated using an electrical method for fine particles with diameters in the range of 0.1-0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The monodisperse liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) particles were used as test aerosols. A faraday cage was employed to measure the low-level current of the charged particles upstream and downstream of each stage. It was found that the collection efficiency curves shifted to correspond to smaller orifice sizes, and the 50-% cutoff sizes were much smaller than those given by the manufacturer for the three stages with nozzles less than 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of ingestion exposure of lead by particle sizes of crumb rubber in artificial turf filling material with consideration of bioavailability. Methods: This study estimated the ingestion exposure by particle sizes (more than 250 um or less than 250 um) focusing on recyclable ethylene propylene diene monomer crumb rubber being used as artificial turf filling. Analysis on crumb rubber was conducted using body ingestion exposure estimate method in which total content test method, acid extraction method and digestion extraction method are reflected. Bioavailability which is a calibrating factor was reflected in ingestion exposure estimate method and applied in exposure assessment and risk assessment. Two methods using acid extraction and digestion extraction concentration were compared and evaluated. Results: As a result of the ingestion exposure of crumb rubber material, the average lead exposure amount to the digestion extraction result among crumb rubber was calculated to be $1.56{\times}10^{-4}$ mg/kg-day for low grade elementary school students and $4.87{\times}10^{-5}$ mg/kg-day for middle and high school students in 250 um or less particle size, and that to the acid extraction result was higher than the digestion extraction result. Results of digestion extraction and acid extraction showed that the hazard quotient was estimated by about over 2 times more in particle size of lower than 250 um than in higher than 250 um. There was a case of an elementary school student in which the hazard quotient exceeded 0.1. Conclusions: Results of this study confirm that the exposure of lead ingestion and risk level increases as the particle size of crumb rubber gets smaller.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of mold inhibitor in the ration which had two different protein levels (18% and 12%) and two different particle sizes (80 or 40% of the particles in the ration less than 1.19 mm). The experimental diets with ave. 12.7% moisture which were treated at the level of 0.1% mold inhibitor were stored under 85% humidity and at $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 10 to 40 days. In experiment 1, after 40 days of storage the $CO_2$ production in the feed treated with mold inhibitor was higher (p < 0.01) than when 40% of the ration's panicle size was 1.19 mm. Aflatoxin production in the experimental diet with mold inhibitor was affected (p<0.05) by the levels of protein and the different particle size ranges after 40 days storage. The interaction of protein levels and particle size ranges on the anatoxin and $CO_2$ production was significant (p<0.05) at 40 days storage. In experiment 2, there was a decrease in total body weight gain and total feed intake observed in chicks fed the untreated diet of 18% protein with 40% of the particles in the ration less than 1.19 mm stored for 40 days. Feed conversion was depressed (p<0.05) in the chicks fed the untreated diets of both particle sizes. Particle size X types of feed interaction in feed conversion was significant (p<0.05).
The main objective of this study is to recovery valuable metals with metal particle size distributions in waste cell phone PCBs(Printed Circuit Boards) by means of pulverization and nitric acid process. The particle size classifier also was evaluated by specific metal contents. The PCBs were pulverized by a fine pulverizer. The particle sizes were classified by 5 different sizes which were PcS1(0.2 mm below), PcS2(0.20~0.51 mm), PcS3(0.51~1.09 mm), PcS4(1.09~2.00 mm) and PcS5(2.00 mm above). Non-magnetic metals in the grinding particles were separated by a hand magnetic. And then, Cu, Co and Ni were separated by 3M nitric acid. Particle diameter of PCBs were 0.388~0.402 mm after the fine pulverizer. The sorting coefficient were 0.403~0.481. The highest metal content in PcS1. And the bigger particle diameter, the lower the valuable metals exist. The recovery rate of the valuable metals increases in smaller particle diameter with same leaching conditions. For further work, it could improve to recovery of the valuable metals effectively by means of individual treatment, multistage leaching and different leaching solvents.
Mathematical model was developed to verify a sequential particle removal taking place in a granular media gravity filter. Consequential multi-layer filtration cycle model was applied to verify the fraction of filter effluent particles that are filter influent particles that were never removed as well as the fraction of filter effluent particles that were detached after deposition were performed through laboratory experiments. Three sizes of marker particles were injected ahead of the filter column as a pulse in the presence of four sizes of polystyrene particles that were used as a primary source of particles in the raw suspension to investigate particle attachment alone in contrast to net removal from attachment and detachment. Microscopic counting of filter effluent particles was assumed to reflect attachment. Experimental results indicated that particle detachment is significant beginning from the early phase of filtration. For each size of fluorescent microspheres at one filter depth, fluorescent microsphere removal increased with filter runtime to a maximum due to ripening. The detached fraction of effluent particles increased with particle size and filter depth. The presence of detached particles and the increasing fraction of detached particles in deeper bed were confirmed.
This paper investigates the effects of operating conditions of an air classifier mill (ACM) on the particle sizes of PVC and rice hull. Based on the Box-Behnken matrix, the pulverization experiments were performed considering three operating factors: the air flow rate, the classifier speed and the mill speed. The response surface methodology was applied to identify the effects of the operating factors on the particle size. Results show that the particle sizes are governed by the linear variations of the operating factors. As less air is supplied and the mill rotates more slowly, the powder of both PVC and rice hull becomes finer. Furthermore, the classifier speed has a significant effect on the PVC powder but almost no effect on the rice hull powder. Thus, it is found that strong interactions exist between the material characteristics of a particle and the operating conditions of the ACM.
Waterborne polyurethane(WPU) is greatly affected by its properties depending on the average particle size. In this study, by analyzing the characteristics of WPUs with different average particle sizes according to the DMPA content and we confirmed that the WPU-Ms have different properties from the physical properties of WPU by mixing two types of WPU with different particle sizes in the same volume. At this time, we mixed WPU at an ideal ratio of 7:3 through literature research. In the thermal characteristic analysis, it was confirmed that the thermal decomposition temperature decreased and Tg increased as the content of DMPA, which is the hard segment, increased. In addition, the average particle size of WPU decreased as DMPA increased, and physical properties and adhesive strength were improved due to increased interaction. When mixed with each other in a weight ratio of 7:3, it was observed that adhesion and mechanical properties were improved compared to only WPU.
We have investigated the crystallization mechanism of the lithium disilicate ($Li_2O-2SiO_2$, LSO) glass particles with different sizes by isothermal and non-isothermal processes. The LSO glass was fabricated by rapid quenching of melt. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements were performed. Different crystallization models of Johnson-Mehl-Avrami, modified Ozawa and Arrhenius were adopted to analyze the thermal measurements. The activation energy E and the Avrami exponent n, which describe a crystallization mechanism, were obtained for three different glass particle sizes. Values of E and n for the glass particle with size under $45{\mu}m$, $75{\sim}106{\mu}m$, and $125{\sim}150{\mu}m$, were 2.28 eV, 2.21 eV, 2.19 eV, and ~1.5 for the isothermal process, respectively. Those values for the non-isothermal process were 2.4 eV, 2.3 eV, 2.2 eV, and ~1.3, for the isothermal process, respectively. The obtained values of the crystallization parameters indicate that the crystallization occurs through the decreasing nucleation rate with a diffusion controlled growth, irrespective to the particle sizes. It is also concluded that the smaller glass particles require the higher heat absorption to be crystallized.
