  • In this experimental study, relative particle size distribution was measureed at the inlet and outlet of the slit impactor using the particle sizer. The imployed measuring method of the size distribution was different from the conventional method. This measurement system has the advantage of obtaining the particle collection efficiency for various particle size easily and at once compared with other methods. The effects of jet to plate distance and Reynolds number on the characteristic impactor efficiency curves have been studied. In the results of this experiment, the increment of collection efficiency was observed as Reynolds number increases in the case of S/W = 1/2 but was very slight. The influence of S/W is more remarkable than that of Reynolds number on the particle collection efficiency.

  • In this paper we have studied the effect of water droplet size on nano-particle size distribution using SMPS(Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer)system. It can be seen that the unknown peak at >100 nm was caused by water droplets which did not dry completely when DI water was used as a solvent in the SMPS system. Therefore, it is important to dry water droplets generated from atomizer in the SMPS system when measuring the particle size distribution using less than 100 nm nano-particles in diameter. From this study, It can be concluded that the napion was a useful material as dryer ones and using EAG(Electro Aerosol Generator) as a particle generator was the most effective in reducing the effect of water droplets.

  • TiN coating were deposited onto different WC-Co substrates using arc ion plating (AIP) technique. The structure and morphology for the deposited coating were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adhesion behavior of the deposited TiN coating was investigated with a conventional scratch test. Effects of WC particle size and Co content on the adhesion strength between the deposited TiN coating and substrate were studied. During the scratch test, the value of critical load was dependent of WC particle size and Co content on substrate. As the WC particle size and Co content on substrate decreased, the critical load increased. The highest critical load, approximately 110N, was obtained at WC particle size of 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ and Co content of 10wt.%.

  • Graphite reinforced conductive polymer composites were fabricated by the compression molding technique. Graphite powder was mixed with an phenol resin to impart electrical property in composites. The ratio and particle size of graphite powder were varied to investigate electrical conductivity of cured composites. In this study, graphite reinforced conductive polymer composites with high filler loadings(>66wt.%) were manufactured to accomplish high electrical conductivity. With increasing the loading ratio of graphite powder, the electrical conductivity and flexural strength increased. However. above 80wt.% filler loadings, flexural strength decreased due to lack of resin. Regardless of graphite particle size, electrical conductivity wasn’t varied. On the other hand, with decreasing particle size, flexural strength increased due to high specific surface area.

  • Effects of particle size distribution of alumina ceramics on behaviors of tape casting were investigated with emphases on the rheological characteristic of slurry, green density, green sheet strength, and sintering density. For the control of particle size distribution of alumina, the commercial grade low soda alumina, which had different mean particle size of 3.58 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.42 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, were chosen and blended together. As results, the mixing of 80 wt% fine powder and 20 wt% coarse powder(designated to FC20) led to the increase of packing density and strength of green sheet, and made it easy to handle during processing without lowering of sintering density. Besides, the pseudoplastic behavior of slurry decreased with increase of the fraction of coarse alumina powder.

  • In this paper, the dependence of piezoelectric properties in the 0-3 composite system of piezoelectric-ceramics polymer materials on particle size of ceramics were investigated. Radial mode and thickness mode of composite were observed similar to single phase of piezoelectric ceramics. The measured values of dielectric constant and dissipation factor were dependent on particle size, which increased with the increasing particle size. the planar coupling factor, thickness coupling factor and thickness frequency constant with the particle size were almost constant, while planar frequency constant increased. The thickness coupling factor decreased with the increasing thickness of specimen. It is found that maximum voltage coeffidient was calculated on the specimen with particle size smallar than 46 ${\mu}m$.

  • The mechanical properties of WPC(wood plastic composite) should effected with the size of wood particle size and also characteristics of wood particles. In this paper, WPC were prepared with various size of wood particles and coupling agent and the mechanical properties were evaluated. The smaller size of wood particle were used for WPC, the higher properties of WPC in tensile strength and breaking elongation were obtained. The smaller amount of wood particle were used for WPC, the higher properties of WPC in tensile strength and breaking elongation were obtained.

  • In order to investigate the effect of magnesia clinker on the characteristics of the investments, temperature change during setting, setting time, compressive strength and thermal expansion of the investments were measured, and x-ray analyses were also performed. The investments were prepared in accordance with variation of the content and the particle size of magnesia clinker respectively. From this experiment, the results were summarized as follows; 1. Temperature of the investments during setting rapidly increased with increase of MgO contents and decrease of the particle size of magnesia clinker. 2. Setting time decreased with increase of MgO contents and decrease of the particle size of magnesia clinker. 3. Compressive strength increased with increase of MgO contents and decrease of the particle size of magnesia clinker. 4. Thermal expansion decreased with increase of MgO contents and decrease of the particle size of magnesia clinker. From the above results, the investment which contains 8% of MgO (270-325mesh) could be recommended for phosphate investment castings.

  • The effects of the particle size on the homogeneity of mixing and segregation of caffeine-lactose (1:99) mixture were studied. Using the two kinds of caffein, milled and unmilled caffein, V-type blender, the degree of mixing according to the particle size was predicted and the experiment on the change of mixedness by mixing time was carried out by the method derived from mixing index theory by Poole et al. and Hersey. the results could be summarized as follows; (1) The homogeneity of mixing was greatly affected by the particle size and the particle size should be reduced to the adepuate level to attain the desirable mixedness. (2) The homogeneity was not proportional to the mixing time and optimum mixing time for caffein-lactose was about 10 minutes. (3) Segregation tendency was increased by the particle size increase and greatly affected by the flow time in the segregation cell.

  • A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25 mm plano-convex lens having 2.5 mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an Ar-Ion continuous wave laser and a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. For the particle diameter of 0.5 ${\mu}m$, the particle beam was broken due to the secondary flow at Reynolds number of 694. Using the Ar-Ion CW laser, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about 16 %, 11.4 % and 9.6 % for PSL particle size of 2.5 ${\mu}m$, 1.0 ${\mu}m$, and 0.5 ${\mu}m$ respectively at the Reynolds number of 320. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2 W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4 W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively. On the other hand, using 30 Hz pulsed Nd-YAG laser, the effect of the radiation pressure on the particle beam width was not distinct unlike Ar-Ion CW laser.
