This article presents computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of nanoparticle movements and flow characteristics in laboratory-scale electrostatic precipitator (ESP) without corona discharge, and for simulation, it uses the commercial CFD program(CFD-ACE) including electrostatic theory and Lagrangian-based equation for nanoparticle movement. For validation of CFD results, a simple cylindrical type of ESP is simulated and numerical prediction shows fairly good agreement with the analytical solution. In particular, the present study investigates the effect of particle diameter, inlet flow rate, and applied electric potential on particle collection efficiency and compares the numerical prediction with the experimental data, showing good agreement. It is found that the particle collection efficiency decreases with increasing inlet flow rate because the particle detention time becomes shorter, whereas it decreases with the increase in nanoparticle diameter and with the decrease of applied electric voltage resulting from smaller terminal electrostatic velocity.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the fluid flow and the heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids using multi-phase thermal LBM and to realize theenhancement of heat transfer characteristics considered in the Brownian motion. In multi-phase, fluid component($H_2O$) is driven by Boussinesq approximation, and nanoparticles component by the external force gravity and buoyancy. The effect of Brownian motion as a random movement is modified to the internal velocity of nanoparticles(Cu). Simultaneously, the particles of both the phases assume the local equilibrium temperature after each collision. It has been observed that when simulating $H_2O$-Cu nanoparticles, the heat transfer is the highest, at the particle volume fraction 0.5% of the particle diameter 10 nm. The average Nusselt number is increased approximately by 33% at the particle volume fraction 0.5% of the particle diameter 10 nm when compared with pure water.

A new particle tracking algorithm using the concept of match probability between two consequent image frames has been developed to obtain an instantaneous 2-dimensional velocity field. A computer simulation has been carried out to check the performance and usefulness of the developed algorithm by comparing with the conventional 4-frame Particle Tracking Velocimetry(PTV) method. As a result the newly developed algorithm shows very good performance. Although the major part of the developed algorithm is time-consuming iterative updating routine of match probability, computational elapse time to get the resonable results is a very short compared with the 4-frame PTv.Additionally, the present 2-frame PTV algorithm recovers more velocity vectors and has higher dynamic range and lower error ratio compared with the conventional 4-frame PTV.
We developed the model equations to investigate the particle movement and growth theoretically in a-Si plasma CVD reactor, where those particles act as the source of contamination. We included the effects of fluid convection, particle diffusion and external forces (ion drag force, electrostatic force and gravitational force) onto the particles to analyze the movements of particles in plasma reactor. Taking into account the particle charge distribution, the particle growth by coagulation between the charged particles was investigated. Most of those particles are located in the region near the sheath boundaries by the balance between the ion drag and electrostatic forces. The particle concentrations in the sheath region and in the bulk plasma region are almost zero. The sizes of the predator particles increase with time by the coagulation with protoparticles and, as a result, the surface area and the average charge of predator particles also increase with time.

Prediction on initial motion of sediment is crucial to evaluate sediment transport and channel stability. The condition of incipient movement of sediment is characterized by bed shear stress, which is generated from force of moving water against the bed of the channel, and by critical shear stress, which depends on force resisting motion of sediment due to the submerged weight of the grains. When the bed shear stress exceeds the critical shear stress, sediment particles begin rolling and sliding at isolated and random locations. In Mountain River, debris flow frequently occurs due to heavy rainfall and can lead some natural stones from mountain slope into the bed river. This phenomenon could add additional forces to sediment transport system in the bed of river and also affect or change direction and magnitude of sediment movement. In this paper, evaluations on incipient motion of uniform coarse gravel under falling spheres impacts using small scale flume channel were conducted. The drag force of falling spheres due to water flow and length movement of falling spheres were investigated. The experiments were carried out in flume channel made by glass wall and steel floor with 12 m long, 0.6 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. The bed slopes were selected with the range from 0.7% to 1.5%. The thickness of granular layer was at least 3 times of diameter of granular particle to meet grain placement condition. The sphere diameters were chosen to be 4cm, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm. The spheres were fallen in to the bed channel for critical condition and under critical condition of motion particle. Based on the experimental results, the Shields curve of particles Reynold number and dimensionless critical shear stress were plotted. The relationship between with drag force and the length movement of spheres were plotted. The pathways of the bed material Under the impact of spheres falling were analyzed.
In this paper, we propose a new framework that can express the detailed movement of liquid sprayed from wet hair or fur. In wet hair, not only the friction and adhesion of the hair but also the movement of the liquid has a distinctive motion compared to the dry hair. However, the recently proposed techniques only considered the contact force and friction of the hair and did not improve the movement of the liquid dispersed in the wet hair. This problem is detrimental to the quality of the result because it does not capture the detailed features expressed in the interaction of hair and liquid. The main point of this paper is to alleviate this problem and improve the quality of the result. As a result, we propose a combining framework that can efficiently express FLIP (Fluid-implicit particle) based fluid simulation and interaction of hair particles. The proposed method expresses the movement of the liquid sprayed in a curved shape which was not expressed in previous studies.

This research is done to design and manufacture prototype clean room garments to improve the product yield of the clean room processing. To assist the research, other papers and references on the same subject were collected for analysis. Also the researcher made interviews with the workers at the clean room. The prototype garments made for this project was compared against the commercially available clean room garments used in the industry. A set of test was conducted to measure particle release from the garments. The prototype clean room garments was manufactured after having considered all the aspects stated above, and tested for the level of particle release. The test subjects performed 4 different movements(marching, arms stretch, squat and rise, and jogging) while wearing the prototype garments and commercially available clean room garments. Particle counts produced by each movement were measured. The data collected was statistically analyzed. The followings are the result of the test. 1) Overall, the prototype garments yielded less particle release.(p<0.001) 2) It showed greatest difference of particle counts for jogging(p<0.001) and squat and rise(p<0.001). In the arms stretch test. the prototype garments was also more effective in controling the particle, however, in the marching test. no significant difference was detected. 3) The prototype garments had less particle release in upper(p<0.001), middle(p< 0.001), and lower level(p<0.01) than the commercially available clean room garments. Manufacturing a new fabric for the clean room processing is important, but this research proves that the design of the clean room garments also determines the efficiency garments in the particle control. Therefore the same fabric can perform differently according to how it is designed. Improving the design will also improve the 7article control and reduce the cost of research. Eventually, the manufacturers will increase the product yield.
The fate and transport mechanism of pollutants which have affinities to particles, such as trace metals and some petroleum product based compounds, can be effectively explained by the movement of sediment. The sediment release from lands to adjacent water bodies due to rainfall events was investigated in an effort to predict the total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations in runoff. The contribution of sediment from land origin to the river TSS can be better understood by the relationship between TSS concentration and particle size in runoff. The sieve analysis was used to determine the particle size distribution and these results were incorporated into statistical models. The critical size of particles was set to $74{\mu}m$ which contributes to the river TSS concentration since fine particles (wash load) of the sediment in the runoff play the key role in constituting TSS in a water column of the river. Empirical relationships were developed to predict TSS in runoff from the percentage of the critical particle size and were proven statistically to be valid.

This paper presents a method for occluded object based motion estimation and tracking system in dynamic image sequences using particle filter with 3D reconstruction. A unique characteristic of this study is its ability to cope with partial occlusion based continuous motion estimation using particle filter inspired from the mirror neuron system in human brain. To update a prior knowledge about the shape or motion of objects, firstly, fundamental 3D reconstruction based occlusion tracing method is applied and object landmarks are determined. And optical flow based motion vector is estimated from the movement of the landmarks. When arbitrary partial occlusions are occurred, the continuous motion of the hidden parts of object can be estimated by particle filter with optical flow. The resistance of the resulting estimation to partial occlusions enables the more accurate detection and handling of more severe occlusions.
Particle-particle interaction is of great importance in the study of suspension rheology. In this research we have investigated the hydrodynamic interaction between two identical cylinders in viscoelastic fluids numerically as a model problem for the study of viscoelastic suspension. We confine two neutrally buoyant cylinders between two parallel plates and impose a shear flow. We determine the migration velocity of two cylinders. The result shows that cylinders move toward or away from each other depending upon the initial distance between them and that there is an equilibrium distance between two cylinders in viscoelastic fluids regardless of the initial distance. In the case of Newtonian fluid, there is no relative movement as expected. The results partly explain the chaining phenomena of spherical particles in shear flows of viscoelastic fluids.
