Zeolite-templated carbons (ZTCs), which have high specific surface area, were prepared by a conventional templating method using microporous zeolite-Y for catalyst supports in direct methanol fuel cells. The ZTCs were synthesized at different temperatures to investigate the characteristics of the surface produced and their electrochemical properties. Thereafter, Pt-Ru was deposited at different carbonization temperatures by a chemical reduction method. The crystalline and structural features were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The textural properties of the ZTCs were investigated by analyzing $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller equation, while the micro- and meso-pore size distributions were analyzed using the Barrett-Joyner-Halenda and Harvarth-Kawazoe methods, respectively. The surface morphology was characterized using transmission electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The electrochemical properties of the Pt-Ru/ZTCs catalysts were also analyzed by cyclic voltammetry measurements. From the results, the ZTCs carbonized at $900^{\circ}C$ show the highest specific surface areas. In addition, ZTC900-PR led to uniform dispersion of Pt-Ru on the ZTCs, which enhanced the electro-catalytic activity of the Pt-Ru catalysts. The particle size of ZTC900-PR catalyst is about 3.4 nm, also peak current density from the CV plot is $12.5mA/cm^2$. Therefore, electro-catalytic activity of the ZTC900-PR catalyst is higher than those of ZTC1000-PR catalyst.
Composite particles of porous silica and cerium oxide nanoparticles blocking UV/blue light were prepared through a dry coating process. Various composite particles were prepared by varying conditions such as the mixing ratio of cerium oxide and silica, and the chamber rotating speed of mechano fusion system. The surface morphology of the composite particles was observed with SEM and the composition was analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). When the cerium oxide/silica composite particles were dispersed in water, the transparency and dispersion stability of the colloidal solution were improved. In addition, the fluidity and spreadability of the particle powder were enhanced by making composite particles. These results show that cerium oxide/silica composite particles can be used as functional cosmetic ingredients for UV/blue light protection.

The Kwinana Shoreline Fumigation Experiment (KSFE) took place at Fremantle, WA, Australia between January 23 and February 8, 1995. The CSIRO DAR LIDAR measured plume sections from near the Kwinana Power Station (KPS) stacks to up to about 5 km downstream. It also measured boundary layer aerosols and the structure of the boundary layer on some occasions. Both stages A and C of KPS were used as tracers at different times. The heart of the LIDAR system is a Neodymium-doped Yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser operating at a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm, with harmonics of 532 nm and 355 nm. For these experiments the third harmonic was used because the UV wavelength at 355 nm is eye safe beyond about 50 m. The laser fires a pulse of light 6 ns in duration (about 1.8 m long) and with an energy (at the third harmonic) of about 70 mJ. This pulse subsequently scattered and absorbed by both air molecules and particles in the atmosphere. A small fraction of the laser beam is scattered back to the LIDAR, collected by a telescope and detected by a photo-multiplier tube. The intensity of the signal as a function of time is a measure of the particle concentration as a function of distance along the line of the laser shot. The smoke plume was clearly identifiable in the scans both before and after fumigation in the thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL). Both power station plumes were detected. Over the 9 days of operation, 1,568 plumes scans (214 series) were performed. Essentially all of these will provide instantaneous plume heights and widths, and there are many periods of continuous operation over several hours when it should be possible to compile hourly average plume statistics as well. The results of four days LIDAR observations of the dispersion of smoke plume in the TIBL at a coastal site are presented for the case of stages A and C.

The dispersion of recycled particulates in the complex coastal terrain containing Kangnung city, Korea was investigated using a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic numerical model and lagrangian particle model (or random walk model). The results show that particulates at the surface of the city that float to the top of thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL) are then transported along the eastern slope of the mountains with the passage of sea breeze and nearly reach the top of the mountains. Those particulates then disperse eastward at this upper level over the coastal sea and finally spread out over the open sea. Total suspended particulate (TSP) concentration near the surface of Kangnung city is very low. At night, synoptic scale westerly winds intensify due to the combined effect of the synoptic scale wind and land breeze descending the eastern slope of the mountains toward the coast and further seaward. This increase in speed causes development of internal gravity waves and a hydraulic jump up to a height of about 1km above the surface over the city. Particulate matter near the top of the mountains also descends the eastern slope of the mountains during the day, reaching the central city area and merges near the surface inside the nocturnal surface inversion layer (NSIL) with a maximum ground level concentration of TSP occurring at 0300 LST. Some particulates were dispersed following the propagation area of internal gravity waves and others in the NSIL are transported eastward to the coastal sea surface, aided by the land breeze. The following morning, particulates dispersed over the coastal sea from the previous night, tend to return to the coastal city of Kangnung with the sea breeze, developing a recycling process and combine with emitted surface particulates during the morning. These processes result in much higher TSP concentration. In the late morning, those particulates float to the top of the TIBL by the intrusion of the sea breeze and the ground level TSP concentration in the city subsequently decreases.
The aim of this study was to investigate the skin-whitening effect of okyong-san and to develop new drug delivery carrier The extracts of okyong-san were found to have the whitening effect and Eudragit$\^$ⓡ/ L 100-55 (EUD) coated solid lipid nanoparticle (E-SLN) was prepared by solvent evaporation method and melt dispersion technique. As a result, E-SLN have a 144-170 nm of particle size, spherical shape, and 33-41% encapsulation efficiency, After release test in vitro, release profile of E-SLN depended on pH and temperature. Lastly, closed patch test and skin-whitening test was peformed clinically. In conclusion, test sample had non-stimulation and high % whiteness. The results suggest that okyong-san and E-SLN is useful as cosmeceuticals for whitening cosmetics.
Methyl methacrylate-butyl methacrylate copolymer (MMBM)-dibutyl phthalate (DBP) films were investigated as a potential topical drug delivery system for the controlled release of nitrofurazone. The kinetic analysis of release data indicated that drug release followed a diffusion-controlled granular matrix model, where the quantity released per unit area is proportional to the square root of time. DBP of several hydrophobic plasticizers selected was found to give the highest release of nitrofurazone. However, hydrophilic plasticizers such as propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol 400 had no controlled release properties and acceptable film formation. The effects of changes in film composition, drug concentration, film thickness, pH of release medium, and temperature on the in vitro release of nitrofurazone were analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. The release rate constant (k') was found to be proportional to DBP content, pH, and the temperature of release medium, but independent of film thickness, and drug concentration in a range of 0.1-0.4% by weight. The linear relationship was found to exist between the log k' and DBP content. The release of nitrofurazone from MMBM-DBP (8:2) films was found to be an energy-linked process. Two energy terms were calculated ; the activation energy for matrix diffusion was 13.45 kcal/mole, and the heat of drug crystal solvation was 27.26-29.34 kcal/mole. Observation of scanning electron micrographs and microscopic photographs showed that the incorporation of DBP in films increased markedly the particle size of nitrofurazone dispersed in the film matrix, comparing with the fine dispersion of nitrofurazone in pure MMBM film alone.
Mg-and Zn-ferrites having spinel structure, a kind of complex oxides showing the advantageous properties of constituently single metal oxides, were selected to find a relationship between their catalytic activities in the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene and the catalytic properties. For the structural and physical analyses of ferrites, XRD, BET, DTA, XPS, TEM and TPD methods were employed. Potassium added to the catalyst played a role of bifunctional promoter which brought the electronic effect as well as the structural one for the increment of particle dispersion. K-addition decreased acid strength of the catalyst by neutralization and increased its acidity. In the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, K-addition let the selectivity to styrene be constant throughout the reaction by the proper acid strength of the ferrite for the reaction, which could be obtained from the neutralization of strong acid sites by potassium.

Bioavailability of ipriflavone (3-phenyl-7-isopropoxy-4H-I-benzopyran-4-one, IP), an antiosteoporotic drug with poor water-solubility, was studied for various types of pharmaceutical preparation in SD rats. The IP preparation types included (1) intact IP, (2) freezer milled IP (FIP), (3) freezer milled IP physically mixed with freezer milled poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (FIP+FPVP) and (4) spray-dried IP with PVP (SIP). Upon oral administration, SIP showed significantly higher absorption and elimination half-lives and the lag time $(t_{lag})$ than those of FIP+FPVP (approximately 2-fold). These results may be due to a sustained releasing effect of IP in the gastrointestinal tract by spray-drying with PVP. The $C_{max}$ of SIP was about 2 and 10 times higher than those of FIP+FPVP and FIP, respectively. The AUC of SIP was about 6 times higher than that of FIP+FPVP and 60 times that of FIP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that SIP consisted of the finest particle size and minimal aggregation than other IP preparations. It is concluded that the IP formula prepared by the spray-drying method with PVP is the most effective approach to the improvement of bioavailability of IP.

Electro-Rheological (ER) fluids belong to a class of colloidal suspensions whose global characteristics can be controlled by the imposition of an appropriate external electrical field upon the fluid domain. The ER fluids for smart hydraulic system are a class of colloidal dispersion which exhibit large reversible changes in their rheological behavior when subjected to external electrical fields. This paper presents experimental results on mechanical properties of an ER fluids subjected to electrical fatigues. As a first step, ER fluid is made of methyl cellulose(MC) ingredient choosing 25% of particle weight-concentration. Following the construction of test for mechanical properties of ER fluid, the shear stress, dynamic yield stress and current density of the ER fluids are experimentally distilled as a function of electric field cycles. The mechanical properties test of operated ER fluids are distilled and compared with those of unused ER fluids.
Rubber-toughened particles which are used in the field of chemical engineering are used to increase the fracture toughness of thermoset resin. The application of Core-Shell particles, one of rubber-toughened particles, as a filler for dental composite or restoration have not been examined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate possible use of Core-Shell particles for dental composite, and the hypothesis was that additional toughening mechanisms are activated by the addition of Core-Shell particles. After blending 50vol% quartz with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA resin matrix, the experimental resins were made by the addition of Core-Shell particles with varied content level as 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, and 20wt%. Fracture toughness was determined on three-point bending specimen with single-edge notch according to ASTM-E 399. Also, flexural properties, that is, strength and modulus were measured by three-point bending testing. Fractogragh of fracture toughness specimen was observed using SEM (JEOL 6400 SEM, MA). The following results from this study were obtained ; 1. Fracture toughness of composite resin added 2.5wt% Core-Shell particles was significantly higher than control group ($p{\leq}0.05$). 2. Flexural properties were decreased with increasing Core-Shell particle content, which showed a correlation statistically ($p{\leq}0.05$). 3. A toughening mechanism such as lamination and microcrack was observed in specimen determined high fracture toughness. 4. The dispersion of Core-Shell itself and quartz filler particles was limited present high content of Core-Shell particles, which decreased a resulting mechanical properties of composites. These results suggest that adequate Core-Shell particles can be used to enhance mechanical properties included toughening for dental composites.
