PMDSPH: A Hybrid N-Body and SPH Code and Its Application to the Milky Way

  • PMDSPH is a combined 3D particle-mesh and SPH code aimed to simulate the self-consistent dynamical evolution of spiral galaxies including live stellar and collisionless dark matter components, as well as an isothermal gas component. This paper describes some aspects of this code and shows how its application to the Milky Way helps to recover the gas flow within the Galactic bar region from the observed HI and CO longitude-velocity distributions.

A Numerical Study on the Particle Collection Characteristics of a Grease Filter for Kitchen Ventilation (주방환기용 그리스 필터의 입자포집 특성에 관한 수치해석)

  • A grease filter is used to remove grease generated from a cooking appliance in a kitchen. This numerical study has been conducted to investigate the particle collection characteristics of a grease filter having nominal flowrate of $100m^3$/h. The flow field and particle trajectories in the grease filter with a flow chamber were simulated by using the commercial code of STAR-CD. The air velocity and pressure distributions were discussed in detail. The pressure drop of a grease filter rapidly increases with increasing the air flowrate. The numerical values of the pressure drop are slightly lower than the experimental values when the air flowrates are 50, 75, and 100㎥/h. The particle collection efficiency of a grease filter increases with increasing the particle diameter, the particle density, and the air flowrate, which means that the inertial impaction is a dominant particle removal mechanism in a grease filter. The cut-off diameter of the tested grease filter representing 50-% collection efficiency is about 11.6$\mu$m for water droplets at $100m^3$/h.

A Study on the Characteristics of the Flow around a Sunken Vessel (침선어초 주위의 유동특성에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with the numerical and experimental study on the characteristics of the flow around a sunken vessel. Numerical simulation of the two dimensional steady flow on the midship section are carried out by the CFD code which is developed by using finite volume method and which includes the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model with standard wall function. A experimental study is also carried out for the 1/100 scale model in circulating water channel. A velocity fields around the ship are measuremed by using particle image velocimetry technique. And the fluid forces acting on the ship hull by uniform current are measured by two axis load cell. The computed and measured velocity fields on the midship section are compared with each other in the view point of velocity dstribution and reattachement length, which shows good agreement in quality. The drag force on the vessel also showed the same tendency in both computational and experimental results. However, the quantitative disagreements are shown due to the three dimensional effect of the experiment. The result are used to determine the functional efficiency and stability of the vessel as a artificial reef.

Developing a new weir type using the smoothed particle hydrodynamic model

  • The aim of this paper is to conduct a hydrodynamic analysis of fluid flow over different weir types using the analytical solution, the physical model taken from another article, and numericalsimulations through the Smoothed particle hydrodynamic method (SPH) using the compiled DualSPHysics source code. The paper covers the field of real fluid dynamics that includes a description of different proposed types of weirs in various flow regimes and the optimal solution for the most efficiency structure shape. A detailed presentation of the method, the structure and it's characteristics are included. Apart from the single stepped weir, two other weir types are proposed: a Divided type and a Downstream slopped type. All of them are modeled using the SPH method.

  • An Euler-Lagrange two-phase flow model is presented fur simulation sheet-flow transport under wave and current. The flow is computed by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation in conjunction with the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model for turbulence closure. The sediment transport is introduced as a motion of granular media under the action of unsteady flow from the Lagragian point of view. In other word, motion of every single particle is numerically traced with Movable Bed Simulator (MBS) code based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM), in which the frequent interparticle collision of the moving particles during the sheet-flow transport is sophisticatedly taken into account. The particle diameter effect on time-dependent developing process of sheet-flow transport is investigated, by using three different diameter sizes of sediment. The influence of an imposed current on oscillatory sheet-flow transport is also investigated. It is concluded that the sediment transport rate increases due to the relaxation process related to the time-lag between flow velocity and sediment motion.

  • In order to analyze the influence of particle bonding and crushing on the characteristics of shear behavior, especially residual shear behavior of granular soil, ring shear test was simulated by using DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Total four models including two non-crushing models and two crushing models were created in this study by using clump or cluster model built in PFC. The applicability of Lobo-crushing model proposed by Lobo-Guerrero and Vallejo(2005) was investigated. In addition, the results of ring shear test were analyzed and compared with those of direct shear test. The results showed that the modelling of ring shear test should be conducted to investigate the residual shear behavior. The Lobo-crushing model cannot be applied to investigate the residual shear strength. Finally, it can be concluded that the numerical models excluding Lobo-crushing model suggested in this study can be used extensively for other studies concerning the residual shear behavior of granular soil including soil crushing.

  • Commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes traditionally rely on the computational efficiency of the simplified single-film apparent char kinetic model to predict char particle temperatures and char conversion rates in pulverized coal boilers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability of the single-film apparent kinetic model and to suggest the importance of proper use of this model. For this, a parametric study was conducted with a consideration of main parameters such as Stefan flow, product species, particle evolution, and kinetic parameters.

Numerical analysis of collection performance for electro-cyclone (전기싸이클론의 집진 성능 해석)

  • The characteristics of flow and particle collection for an electrocyclone with a central wire inside a high efficiency Stairmand cyclone was numerically analysed. Turbulent flow field was modeled by the Reynolds stress model and solved with an FVM code FLUENT. Particle motion and in-situ charging were simultaneously solved by a Lagrangian integration with time. The flow field obtained was in good agreement with experiments in the outer region. The characteristics of collection enhancement due to electric force were well manifested and well explained based on first principles. The effect of the in-situ charging process was very similar to the case of a simplified assumption of saturated charging, and the effect of the hopper was proved negligible.

CFD Study on Particle Effect and Erosion in the Axial Compressor Blades and Shroud of Turbomachinery

  • Fly ash enters axial compressor when a turbomachinery is operated in an adverse environment. We have numerically investigated erosion of the blade and shroud in the turbulent compressor passage flow under the influence of gas-particle two-phase interaction. There have appeared quasi-three dimensional calculations on this subject but not the complete three-dimensional gas-particle interaction as done in the present work. Lagrangian particle tracing technique is used on the base of parallel processing for efficient calculation. Accuracy of the present code is tested using the benchmark lPL nozzle. In the DFVLR compressor blades, we have shown that a large number of particles passing through the tip clearance make impact on the blade tip and on the shroud. Higher degree of erosion is resulted by the heavier particles due to the centrifugal force.
