The effects of additional Mg content, the size and volume fraction of reinforcement phase on the mechanical properties of ceramic particle reinforced aluminium matrix composites fabricated by pressureless metal infiltration process were investigated. The hardness of $SiC_p/AC8A$ composites increased gradually with an increase in the additive Mg content, while the bending strength of $SiC_p/AC8A$ composites increased with an increase in additive Mg content up to 5%. However, this decreased when the level of additive Mg content was greater than 5% due to the formation of coarse precipitates by excessive Mg reaction and an increase in the porosity level. The hardness and strength of the composites increased with decreasing the size of SiC particle. It was found that the composites with smaller particles enhanced the interfacial bonding than those with bigger particles from fractography of the composites. The hardness of $Al_2O_{3p}/AC8A$ composites increased gradually with an increase in the volume fraction, however, the bending strength of $Al_2O_{3p}/AC8A$ composites decreased when the volume fraction of alumina particle was greater than 40% owing to the high porosity level.
Calcareous soil is originated from marine biogenic sediments and weathering of carbonate rocks. The formation history for calcareous sediment includes complex physical, biological and chemical processes. It is preferably selected as the major fill materials for hydraulic reclamation and artificial island construction. Calcareous sands possess inter pores and complex shape are liable to be damaged at normal working stress level due to its fragile nature. Thus, the engineering properties of calcareous soil are greatly affected by its high compressibility and crushability. A series of triaxial shear tests were performed on calcareous sands derived from South China Sea under different test conditions. The effects of confining pressure, particle size, grading, compactness, drainage condition, and water content on the total amount of particle breakage for calcareous soil were symmetrically investigated. The test results showed that the crushing extent of calcareous sand with full gradation was smaller than that a single particle group under the same test condition. Large grains are cushioned by surrounding small particles and such micro-structure reduces the probability of breakage for well-graded sands. The increasing tendency of particle crushing for calcareous sand with a rise in confining pressure and compactness is confirmed. It is also evident that a rise in water content enhances the amount of particle breakage for calcareous sand. However, varying tendency of particle breakage with grain size is still controversial and requires further examination.
Fly ash is one of the aluminosilicate sources used for the synthesis of geopolymers. The particle size distribution of fly ash and the content of unburned carbon residue are known to affect the compressive strength of geopolymers. In this study, the effects of particle size and unburned carbon content of fly ash on the compressive strength of geopolymers have been studied over a compositional range in geopolymer gels. Unburned carbon was effectively separated in the $-46{\mu}m$ fraction using an air classifier and the fixed carbon content declined from 3.04 wt% to 0.06 wt%. The mean particle size ($d_{50}$) decreased from $22.17{\mu}m$ to $10.79{\mu}m$. Size separation of fly ash by air classification resulted in reduced particle size and carbon residue content with a collateral increase in reactivity with alkali activators. Geopolymers produced from carbon-free ash, which was separated by air classification, developed up to 50 % higher compressive strength compared to geopolymers synthesized from raw ash. It was presumed that porous carbon particles hinder geopolymerization by trapping vitreous spheres in the pores of carbon particles and allowing them to remain intact in spite of alkaline attack. The microstructure of the geopolymers did not vary considerably with compressive strength, but the highest connectivity of the geopolymer gel network was achieved when the Si/Al ratio of the geopolymer gel was 5.0.
Core/shell ($\pm$)PS/(-)silica nanocomposite particles were synthesized by dispersion polymerization using an amphoteric initiator, 2,2'-azobis [N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2,2-methylpropionamidine] ($HOOC(CH_2)_2HN$(HN=) $C(CH_3)_2CN$=NC $(CH_3)_2C$(=NH)NH $(CH_2)_2COOH$), VA-057. Negatively charged (-6.9 mV) silica was used as the stabilizer. The effects of silica addition time and silica and initiator concentrations were investigated in terms of polymerization kinetics, ultimate particle morphology, and size/size distribution. Uniform hybrid microspheres with a well-defined, core-shell structure were obtained at the following conditions: silica content = 10-15 wt% to styrene, VA-057 content=above 2 wt% to styrene and silica addition time=0 min after initiation. The delay in silica addition time retarded the polymerization kinetics and broadened the particle size distribution. The rate of polymerization was strongly affected by the silica content: it increased up to 15 wt% silica but then decreased with further increase in silica content. However, the particle size was only marginally influenced by the silica content. The zeta potential of the composite particles slightly decreased with increasing silica content. With increasing VA-057 concentration, the PS microspheres were entirely coated with silica sol above 1.0 wt% initiator.
Clay or sand does not exist alone but various sizes of soil are mixed in the field. In this study, the effect of water content on large deformation of such mixed soils is studied by using soil column tests and a particle method. A soil column with 7 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height, which was made out of kaolinite with sand content of 0, 10, 25, or 50%, was tested for large deformation. Its deformation was monitored with time. While increasing its water content from 40, 60, to 80%, a total of 12 types of soil column tests were carried out. The particle method simulated their deformation with time. A maximum plastic shear modulus, which was a function of undrained shear strength and plasticity index for soils with different water contents, was associated with soil viscosity to simulate large deformation of soil column. When a sand content of soil column was constant, the deformation of soil column increased with increasing water content. When a water content of soil column was constant, large deformation occurred with increasing the sand content. The maximum deformation, which was 22 cm in diameter, was observed in the case of water content of 80% and sand content of 50%. The particle method was able to relatively well simulate such large deformation and stress change of soils.
One of the most important factors which affect the impact strength of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) is the rubber-phase particle size and size distribution. In this study, HIPS was prepared from a batch reactor to observe the influence of reaction conditions such as rubber content, agitation speed and prepolymerization time on the particle size and size distribution. Measurements concerning the particle size distribution were conducted using a particle size analyzer. Due to swelling, the particle suspended in toluene increases in size with lower heat-treatment temperature and shorter heat-treatment time, while the particle in methyl ethyl ketone shows quite reasonable size without any effort of heat-treatment. As rubber content increases, the average particle size increases substantially, but the increase in agitation speed at lower rubber contents does not have much influence on the size. However, the polystyrene-phase particles occluded in rubber-phase become more uniform as agitation speed increases. Longer prepolymerization time produces rubber-phase particles with narrower particle size distribution.
Seven rice varieties(Suweonjo, Suweon232, BG276-5, IR44, IR41999-139, Suweon230 and Yongjubyeo) were used to study the effect of particle size on the physicochemical properties(proximate analysis, color values, amylogram, water absorption index and water solubility index) of rice flours. Suweonjo had the highest amylose content (27.07%) and Yongjubyeo had the lowest one (17.17%). Suweonjo had the highest protein content (11.36%) and IR44 had the lowest one (6.75%). Protein content of rice flours prepared in a pin mill was decreased as particle size of rice flours decreased. L value of rice flour was increased as particle size of rice flours decreased while b value and ${\Delta}E$ value decreased. Maximum viscosity, cold paste viscosity, breakdown, total setback in amylogram properties were increased as particle size of rice flours decreased while initial paste temperature decreased. Water absorption index (WAI) and water solubility index (WSI) were increased as particle size of rice flour decreased.

The pore structure of paper was modified by the application of the blending of pulp, refining, and filler particle size and ash content. It was conformed that the reflectivity of paper can be modified by the combination of the above parameters. It was also found that the change of reflectivity of paper was greatly dependent on the pore structure, such as average pore size, pore size distribution and porosity. The average pore size was decreased with addition of HwBKP, but the smallest average pore size was obtained from the addition of 80% HwBKP Refining of pulp decreased both average pore size and the reflectivity of paper. The pore size distribution of filled paper can be varied by the combination of filler particle size and ash content
Red pepper powders with variuos seed contents (0%, 10%, 20%) and particle sizes were stored at 0$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$, and 30$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days, and the changes in their characteristics were monitored. The initial moisture content was about 13%, and the powders were packed in 0.1 mm-thick polypropylene (PP) bags. Moisture content of each power remained constantly, so PP bags appeared to be effective to prevent moisture transmission. All the values of L*, a* and b* were higher in fine particles than in coarse particles. Storage at 0$^{\circ}C$ did not change any color values, however, overall color values devreased apparently when stored at 30$^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. Capsanthin contents decreased gradually at all storage temperatures and more rapidly at higher temperature. The contents of capsaicinoids in fine particles (49∼59 mg%) were twic as much as those in coarse particles (15∼36 mg%), and they did not change throughout the storage.
Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) were collected from road dust and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to measure the content of tire wear particles (TWPs) in the TRWPs. The TGA thermograms of TRWPs showed two weight loss steps associated with polymer decomposition including weight loss after 480℃ which may be due to road wear particles. Different samples gave different TGA thermograms because the types and contents of the road wear particles attached to the TWPs should be different from each other, and each TWP might have different composition. The TGA results of the model asphalt pavement wear particles, with (volatile organics + polymers + carbon black) : ash = 33.5 : 66.5, was applied to the TRWP results, and the TWP contents of TRWPs were found to be 50-65%. The zinc oxide content in the rubber compound was negligible.
