This paper compares theoretical wave profile and particle kinematics with experimental results generated by a 2 D wave tank. Particle velocity fields of compound waves were acquired using a PIV technique. Synchronization was applied to acquire images of the wave fields, and the time gap between these images was controlled by the user. This technique was applied to investigate the wave breaking mechanism, and the wave profile and velocity distribution in a wave breaking field was obtained.
A single particle analytical technique, named low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA), was applied to characterize samples collected at a subway station and ambient samples in Seoul. According to their chemical composition, many distinctive particle types were identified. For samples collected at the subway station platform, the major chemical species are carbon-rich, organic, aluminosilicates (AlSi), AlSi/C, AlSi/$CaCO_{3},\;CaCO_{3},\;SiO_{2},\;and\;Fe_{2}O_{3}$. For outdoor samples, carbon-rich, organic, AlSi, $CaCO_{3},\;SiO_{2},\;NaNO_{3},\;(Na,Mg)NO_{3},\;Na(CO_{3},NO_{3},SO_{4}),\;and\;(NH_{4})_2SO_4$, are abundantly encountered. Samples collected at the subway station show very high contents of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, both in coarse and fine fractions, which come from brake block, subway train wheel, electric contact materials, etc. It is demonstrated that the single-particle characterization using this low-Z particle EPMA technique provided detailed information on various types of chemical species in indoor and outdoor samples.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of inorganic composition and filler particle morphology on the mechanical properties of different self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs). Materials and Methods: Three SARCs including RelyX Unicem-2 (RUN), Maxcem Elite (MAX), and Calibra Universal (CAL) were tested. Rectangular bar-shaped specimens were prepared for flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) and determined by a 3-point bending test. The Knoop microhardness (KHN) and top/bottom microhardness ratio (%KHN) were conducted on the top and bottom faces of disc-shaped samples. Sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl) were evaluated after 24 hours of water immersion. Filler morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). FS, FM, %KHN, Wsp, Wsl, and EDS results were submitted to 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc test, and KHN also to paired t-test (α = 0.05). Results: SARC-CAL presented the highest FS value, and SARC-RUN presented the highest FM. SARC-MAX and RUN showed the lowest Wsp and Wsl values. KHN values decreased from top to bottom and the SARCs did not differ statistically. Also, all resin cements presented carbon, aluminum, and silica in their composition. SARC-MAX and RUN showed irregular and splintered particles while CAL presented small and regular size particles. Conclusions: A higher mechanical strength can be achieved by a reduced spread in grit size and the filler morphology can influence the KHN, as well as photoinitiators in the composition. Wsp and Wsl can be correlated with ions diffusion of inorganic particles.
In tropical regions, lateritic soil is frequently used in road embankment. However, it is one of the sources of road failure owing to its low strength. Generally, cement and lime are used as stabilizers for lateritic soil, but they are not environmentally friendly. Some studies try to use eggshells, for they are food waste and share the same chemical composition as lime. Previous researchs have shown that eggshell powder could enhance the strength of lateritic soil. This research investigated the effect of particle size of the eggshell powder and the effect of the protein-membrane presence in the eggshell on stabilizing capacity of soil. Through laboratory tests, unconfined compressive strength was examined for various particle sizes. The particle size of eggshell powder ranging between 150 ㎛ and 88 ㎛ was appropriate size that made an excellent stabilizer at 3% concentration. On the other hand, the protein-membrane reduced the stabilizing ability of the eggshell powder when the content of eggshell powder is less than 4% in soil. Numerical analysis of road embankment was performed based on the results obtained in the laboratory tests. It is shown that the eggshell powder has improved the stability of the sub-base of the road embankment.
In order to understand the relative importance of various pathways leading to the production and transformation of aerosols under different atmospheric conditions, the behavior of atmospheric aerosols have been investigated using a high volume tape sample in Seoul for a week period during August 1990. The concentrations of anion $(SO^{2-}_4, NO^-_3, CI^-)$ and cation $(Ca^{2+}, Na^+, NH^+_4)$ species of aerosol samples were analyzed to identify the ionic composition of aerosols and to estimate their relative contributions to aerosol formation. The concentrations of aerosol species were calculated by a multiple regression model. The results of our calculations indicate the existence of various chemical species such as $(NH_4)_2SO_4, Na_2SO_4, CaSO_4, NH_4NO_3, NaNO_3, Ca(NO_3)_2, NH_4Cl$, and NaCl salts. According to our calculations, the most dominant species of aerosol was $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ with the mean concentration of 23.3 $/mu g/m^3$ (66.9%). The proportion of different componts with aerosol (e.g., $NH_4NO_3$ and $NH_4Cl$) was strongly affected by temperature, relative humidity, and partial presure of gases.
Based on the measurement data of the particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to a nominal 10 ${\mu}m$ (PM10) by the ${\beta}$-ray absorption method (BAM) equipped with an inlet heater and the gravimetric method (GMM) at two coastal sites in Korea, the optimal inlet heater temperature was estimated. By using a gas/particle equilibrium model, Simulating Composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2 (SCAPE2), water content in aerosols was estimated with varying temperature to find the optimal temperature increase to make the PM10 concentration by BAM comparable to that by GMM. It was estimated that the heated air temperature inside the BAM should be increased up to $35{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ at both sites. At this temperature range, evaporation of volatile aerosol components was minor. Similar ($30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) temperature range was also obtained from the calculation based on the absolute humidity which changed with ambient absolute humidity and chemical composition of hygroscopic species.
Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.
A enameled wire may have better corona-resistance when its coating material contains nano-sized inorganic particles. However, industrial applications are still limited because an aggregation between nanofillers may happen during coating processes. In this study we use a novel scheme of surface modification with silane on silica nanoparticles using sonochemical reaction where composition and surface density of silanes can be controlled in order to reduce particle-particle attractive interaction. Functionalized nanoparticles are evenly dispersed in the matrix confirmed by SEM and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. Dielectric strength and thermal resistance of the nanocomposite wires are improved while flexibility of the wire maintains.
Fine TiO2 and BaTiO3 powders having spherical particles were synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of alcoholic solution of metal alkoxide in an electric furnace heated at 400-90$0^{\circ}C$. Microstructure and composition of particles synthesized were observed by TEM and XRD respectively. Spectific surface area of powders synthesized was examined through BET specific surface area measurement. TEM observation revealed that the particle size did not change irrespective of pyrolysis temperature but decreased according to the increase of concentration and spherical particle was consisted of primary particles of about 0.02${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As for BaTiO3 powder, the ratio of Ti/Ba was 0.987 by EDX analysis.
The waste sludge is by-produced about 20-30% of total production and arised to the severe problems of this mine's surrounding environmnet. This study was invested the composition of component, particle of size of the waste sludge by Chemical Analysis, X, R, D, Particle Size Analyzer and the physical properties (air content, slump, strength, etc) of concrete when the waste sludge is added into concrete. so, It's recomended the proper content of the waste sludge to be added into concrete. and then, is verified to be applied at batch plant in field. Above the results, the recomeded content of the waste sludge is about 2-4% (about 4-8% in cement) in aggregates and when it's added the recomended content, they are detected to be more or less changed the physical properties of concrete, ( equally strength and durability, little less air con tent, little increased shinkage, etc). but the application of the recomended content don't arise the problem of the basic quality control of concrete and physical properties.
