PIXE( Proton Induced X- ray Emission ) analysis has been applied to the analysis of aerosol for the Purpose of pollution monitoring. Coarse and fine Particle fractions were sampled selectively, using Nuclepore filter in stacked filter units, once a month from February to September in 1993 at urban and rural sites. Concentration of 9 elements, Si, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb was determined without Pretreatment of Samples. Comparison of data between urban and rural site revealed higher elemental concentration level in urban aerosol. From April to May aerosol sampling was carried out daily to observe the effect of Yellow Sand on the composition of aerosol in the Korean Peninsula. During the Yellow Sand period, Si, Ca, Fe content level in aerosol became more than 5 times higher than normal. The elemental concentration of the aerosol samples of Daejeon City was compared with that of two foreign cities. S and Pb( which are fuel- derived elements) levels in Daejeon City aerosol appeared to be lower than those of foreign cities. And it may be due to the leaded-fuel restriction policy of Korean government since 1987.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of moisture content and particle size of sawdust on the fuel characteristics of wood pellets produced with Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica, QUM), red pine (Pinus densiflora, PID) and larch (Larix kaempferi, LAK) sawdust using a flat-die pelletizer. Prior to produce wood pellets, the sawdust was controlled to the moisture content of 8, 11, 12% and was screened to the particle size of 2 and 4 mesh. In the analysis of its chemical composition, QUM had a high ash content, and PID and LAK contained large amount of lignin. In case of the fuel characteristics, PID pellets had the lowest moisture content of pellets (P-MC), and LAR pellets was found to have the highest bilk density (BD) and durability (DU). With the increase of moisture content of sawdust (S-MC), P-MC and DU of QUM, PID and LAK pellets increased, but BD of QUM and LAK pellets decreased. When size of sawdust used for the production of wood pellets decreased, P-MC and BD of LAK pellets and BD of QUM pellets increased. Decrease of particle size contributed to the increase of DU of QUM, PID and LAK pellets. In addition, BD and DU of QUM pellets produced with 12% S-MC sawdust increased as its particle size reduced. For LAK pellets, DU was not influence by particle size in the S-MCs of 10% and 12%, but increased with the decrease of particle size in the S-MC of 8%. Based on the results and economical aspects, 10% MC and 2 mesh paricle size for QUM sawdust and 12% MC and 2 mesh particle size for PID sawdust might be optimal conditions for pellets production, and fuel characteristics of wood pellets produced by the conditions greatly exceeded the minimum requirements for the $1^{st}$-grade wood pellets of the standard designated by Korea Forest Research Institute.

This study characterized fly ash produced from a sewage sludge incineration facility in Korea to determine if the byproducts can be utilized. All the incinerated sewage sludge was from a city in Korea. To characterize fly ash and to determine if it can be utilized, pH, water contents, elemental components, particle size, surface morphology, heavy metal compositions, and others were analyzed. In average, pH was 6.2, and water contents was about 5%. T-N and $T-P_2O_5$ were 3% and 24.5%, respectively. Particle size averaged 836 nm; surface morphology did not exhibit any significant results. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results revealed that major components of the fly ash were $P_2O_5$, CaO, MgO, $K_2O$. Composition of heavy metals by the Korea Standard Methods for Waste Quality did not exceed the criteria for specified wastes in Korea.

The objective of this study is to develop the water spraying which can effectively by applied to the control or suppression of the fugitive dust generated from the scrap metal handling area at the Port of Inchon. As a first step toward this goal, we carried out some preliminary analyses on the chemical composition, physical shape, and particle size distribution of the sample dust. Next, to quantitatively investigate the effect of adding surfactants to the spraying water on the wettability of the sample dust, the Standard Sink Test was carried out for four different surfactants and at six different concentrations using the surfactants considered in this study. Results of from the preliminary analysis indicated that the main chemical component consisting of the sample dust is Goethite(FeO(OH)) and that the particles smaller than 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in geometric diameter occupy about 36% of the sample dust in mass. This result implies that the fugitive dust generated from the scrap metal handling area at the Port of Inchon should affect the environment nearby more than we have expected. This is because of relatively large mass percentage of the small metal particles less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in geometric diameter, what we may call respirable particles. As for the results of the Standard Sink Test, higher surfactant concentration tends to result in the higher wettability of the sample dust for the surfactants considered in this study, which in turn ensures the high particle collection efficiency of the droplets generated from the water spraying system. Based upon this preliminary results, studies to develop more sophisticated scaled model for dynamic test in underway and the effort to find the best surfactants as well as the optimum operating conditions are being made at the same time.
This study was carried out to understand the properties of the E.A.F. steel-making dusts for stabilization processing. The properties are related to mincral composition, shape, particle size, magnetism, density, porosity and leaching characteristic. the dust particles, the size of which ranges from sub-micron to tens-micron, were mainly spherical like balls that were agglomerated each other: the large particles were generally Fe-rich and the small particles were spherical like balls that were agglomerated each other: the large particles were franklinite (ZnFe$_{2}O_{4}$), magnetite (Fe$_{3}O_{4}$) and zincite (ZnO) by XRD analysis. When the dusts were sieved by a wet process, the particle fraction over 200 mesh had 1.5 wt.% with magnetite and quartz. The particles in the size range of 200-500 mesh consisted of magnetite, franklinite. The 82 wt.% of the steel-making dusts were occupied by the particles finer than 500 mesh and contained franklinite and zincite as main mineralogical compositions. When the dusts of around 78% porosity compressed under the load of approximately 1 KPa, the porosity decreased to 68% and to 535 under around 13 KPa. When the E.A.F. dusts were leached according to the Korea standard leaching procedure on the waster, the heavy metals exceeding the leaching criteria were cadmium, lead and mercury.

This thesis describes the use of measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopic growth to examine the physical and chemical properties of several particle classes. The primary objective of this work was to investigate the optical and cloud forming properties of a range of ambient aerosol types measured in a number of different locations. The tool used for most of these analyses is a differential mobility analyzer / tandem differential mobility analyzer (DMA / TDMA) system developed in our research group. To collect the data described in two of the chapters of this thesis, an aircraft-based version of the DMA / TDMA was deployed to Japan and California. The data described in two other chapters were conveniently collected during a period when the aerosol of interest came to us. The unique aspect of this analysis is the use of these data to isolate the size distributions of distinct aerosol types in order to quantify their optical and cloud forming properties. I used collected data during the Asian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia) to examine the composition and homogeneity of a complex aerosol generated in the deserts and urban regions of China and other Asian countries. An aircraft-based tandem differential mobility analyzer was used for the first time during this campaign to examine the size-resolved hygroscopic properties of particles having diameters between 40 and 586 nm. Asian Dust Above Monterey (ADAM-2003) study was designed both to evaluate the degree to which models can predict the long-range transport of Asian dust, and to examine the physical and optical properties of that aged dust upon reaching the California coast. Aerosol size distributions and hygroscopic growth are measured in College Station, TX to investigate the cloud nucleating and optical properties of a biomass burning aerosol generated from fires on the Yucatan Peninsula. Measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopicity and volatility were used to infer critical supersaturation distributions of the distinct particle types that were observed during this period. The predicted CCN concentrations were used in a cloud model to determine the impact of the different aerosol types on the expected cloud droplet concentration. RH-dependent aerosol extinction coefficients are calculated at a wavelength of 550 nm.
Intraarticular corticosteroid injections for therapy of rheumatic arthritis are administered with the aim of optimal local anti-inflammatory effect at the injection site. Since the side effects of corticosteroidal drug, dexamethasone(DEX), administered at hish dose limited the therapeutic efficacy, there was a need to design a new drug delivery system for controlled release of dexamethasone. As a prodrug for continuous therapeutic efficacy, dexamethasone-21-palmitate(DEX-PAL) was prepared via esterification of palmitoyl chloride and dexamethasone. DEX-PAL was identified by NMR and MASS analysis. DEX-PAL or DEX was entrapped in lipid nanosphere which could be prepared by using a self emulsification-solvent evaporation method. Physicochemical characteristics such as mean particle diameter, zeta potential and drug loading efficiency of the lipid nanospheres were investigated with variation of either the kind of lipid or the lipid composition. The lipid nanospheres had a mean diameter $83{\sim}95$ nm and DEX-PAL loading efficiency of up to 95%. The drug loading efficiency increased with the increase of aliphatic chain length attached to the phospholipid. The incorporation of cationic lipid was very efficient for both reducing particle size of lipid nanospheres and enhancing drug loading efficiency. The lipid nanospheres containing DEX-PAL may be a promising novel drug carrier for the controlled release of the poorly water-soluble drugs.
The mechanical properties of liquid phase sintered (LPS) SiC materials, with the addition of oxide powder, were investigated, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of their microstructures. LPS-SiC materials were fabricated at a temperature of 1820 $^{\circ}C$ under an argon atmosphere, using three different starting sizes of SiC particles. The sintering additive for the fabrication of the LPS-SiC materials was an $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ mixture with a constant composition ratio ($Al_2O_3/Y_2O_3$: 1.5). The particle sizes of the commercial SiC powderswere 30 nm, 0.3 $\mu$m, and 3.0 $\mu$m. The flexural strength of the LPS-SiC materials was also examined at elevated temperatures. A decrease in the starting size of the SiC particles led to an increase in the flexural strength of the LPS-SiC materials, accompanying a highly dense morphology with the creation of a secondary phase. Such a secondary phase was identified as $Y_3Al_2(AlO_4)2$. The flexural strength of the LPS-SiC materials greatly decreased with an increase in the test temperature, due to the creation of a large amount of pores.
New process development of nuclear fuel fabrication for nuclear power plant was attempted by induction plasma technology with yttria-stabilized-zirconia ($\textrm{ZrO}_{2}$-$\textrm{Y}_{2}\textrm{O}_{3}$)powder, similar to $\textrm{UO}_{2}$, in the respect of melting point and physicochemical characteristics. Extent of powder melting was affected greatly by plasma plate power and particle size. Being optimized such as, sheath gas composition, probe position, particle size and spraying distance, dense deposit of 97.91% T.D. with deposition rate 20mm/min was attained at the condition of 120/20$\ell$/min of Ar/$\textrm{H}_{2}$ flow rate, 80kw of plate power, 8cm of probe position, 200Torr of chamber pressure and 18cm of spraying distance. The pellet of 96.5% of theoretical density was formed with homogeneity and nice exterior view at the best condition of deposition experiments, and the possibility of new nuclear pellet fabrication process was confirmed. The main and interrelated effects on deposit density were assessed by ANOVA(Ana1ysis of Variance).
The PZT based piezoelectric thick films prepared by screen printing method have been mainly used as a functional material for MEMS applications due to their compatibility of MEMS process. However the screen printed thick films generally reveal poor electrical and mechanical properties because of their porous microstructure. To improve microstructure we mixed attrition milled powder with ball milled powder of 0.01Pb$(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})O_3$-0.41Pb$(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$-$0.35PbTiO_3$-$0.23PbZrO_3$+0.1 wt% ${Y_2}{O_3}$+1.5 wt% ZnO composition. By mixing 25 % of attrition milled powder and 75 % of ball milled powder, the broadest particle size distribution was obtained, leading to a dense thick film with crack-free microstructure and improved dielectric properties. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the film was in wellcrystallized perovskite phase. The remanent polarization was increased from $13.7{\mu}C/cm^2$ to $23.3{\mu}C/cm^2$ at the addition of 25 % attrition milled powder.
