  • Characteristics of the pressure drop in an expanded bed have been compared to those in a packed bed for numerical study of the interphase drag in gas-particle flows. A numerical analysis of the pressure drop by the particle drag has been conducted according to the tube-to-particle diameter ratios and Reynolds numbers for comparison. As the tube-to-particle diameter ratios increase at the same Reynolds number, the pressure drop tends to converge. It has been confirmed that characteristics of the pressure drop in the expanded bed are similar to those in the packed bed.

  • This paper reviews the previous industrial solid bed process simulations to provide a better understanding of the modeling approaches to the particle reactions in the bed. Previous modeling studies on waste incinerator, iron ore sintering bed, blast furnace, iron ore pellet indurator, and biomass combustor can be seen on the common ground of unsteady 1-D modeling scheme. Approaches to the particle reaction modeling have been discussed in terms of the status of solid particles in the bed, types of reaction progression in a particle, and the consideration of the intra-particle temperature gradient.

  • In the design of advanced light water reactors (ALWRs) and in the safety assessment of currently operating nuclear power plants, it is necessary to evaluate the possibility of experiencing a degraded core accident and to develop innovative safety technologies in order to assure long-term debris cooling. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the enhancement factors of dryout heat flux in debris beds by coolant injection from below. The experimental facility consists mainly of an induction heater, a double-wall quartz-tube test section containing a steel-particle bed and coolant injection and recovery condensing loop. A fairly uniform heating of the particle bed was achieved in the radial direction and the axial variation was within 20%. This paper reports the experimental data for 3.2 mm and 4.8 mm particle beds with a 300 mm bed height. The dryout heat density data were obtained for both the top-flooding and the forced coolant injection from below with an injection mass flux of up to $1.5\;kg/m^2s$. The dryout heat density increased as the rate of coolant injection increased. At a coolant injection mass flux of $1.0\;kg/m^2s$, the dryout heat density was ${\sim}6.5\;MW/m^3$ for the 4.8 mm particle bed and ${\sim}5.6\;MW/m^3$ for the 3.2 mm particle bed. The enhancement factors of the dryout heat density were 1.6-1.8.

  • An fine silver particle has a variety of uses, such as in killing micrograms and as catalysts. Many techniques have been used for the production of the fine particles. Faraday cell, consisting of two silver electrodes in an electrolyte, is unique, but it is hard to get a very fine particle by this method. A finer silver nano-particle producing cell, utilizing a dielectric bed as a lower electric current and higher field controlling means, has been proposed and investigated. The I-V characteristics of the cell and effect of the dielectric bed on the producing finer silver nano-particles have been investigated. The I-V characteristics of the cell with the dielectric bed were different from that of the same system without the bed, due to the increased cell resistance and elevated electric field intensity. It is found that the proposed cell with the dielectric bed can produce finer silver nano-particles effectively, which, however, can be used as one of effective fine silver nano-particle producing means.

  • Transport of bed load and suspended particle in coastal waters is main factor causing change in shoreline, and effective measurement method and appropriate equipment is required. To measure bed load and suspended particle transport an equipment was designed and manufactured, and it was applied in the field. The equipment consists of four main elements, body supporter, bed load and suspended particle sampler, sampler support and lock. Eight samplers were installed along the circumference of each supporter, and each sample is a 45-degree intervals. The field experiment was done once along Gyeongpo beach in August 2013. This note described the design and function of the equipment and results of field experiments.

  • In this paper, numerical simulations on conical fluidized bed combustors were carried out to estimate the effect of coefficients of restitution between particle and particle and particle to wall on hydrodynamics and heat transfer. The Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model was used to simulate the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in a conical fluidized bed combustor. The solid phase properties were calculated by applying the kinetic theory of granular flow. Simulations results show that increasing the restitution coefficient between the particle and particle results in increasing the bed pressure drop. On other hand, the increasing of particle to wall coefficient of restitution results in decreasing the bed pressure drop. It is found that the coefficient of restitution has little effect on heat transfer.

  • A method is presented which enables the computation of the bed-load transport rate as the product of particle velocity and bed-load Concentration. In this study, it is assumed that particle velocity is proportinal to the flow velocity near the particle and the apperance frequency of the component of the fluctuating velocity of turbulent flow close to bed is normally distributed, and the particle velocity is expressed by mean flow velocity near the particle and the function of bed shear stress. Engelund formula, which is checked indirectly to be proper to use in this study, is employed to estimate the effective shear velocity. And the dffective bed shear stress acting on particle is obtained by that shear velocity. Ashida-Michiue's formula is used to get the concentration of bed-load. Experimental data for bed-load is compared with the results of other studies and the transport fornula suggested in this paper gives results which are in good accordance with other's experimental data excepting the results obtained the case of comparatively small bed shear stress.

  • In this study, the overall heat transfer coefficients are calculated on fluidized bed double pipe heat exchanger and single phase double pipe heat exchanger at the same condition. The effect of the particle size, its material, fluidizing velocity and static bed height on overall heat transfer coefficient has been investigated. The main conclusions obtained from the experiment are as follows. 1. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the fluidized bed heat exchanger is higher than that of single phase forced convective heat exchanger (maximum 2.3 times) 2. The value of the overall heat transfer coefficient increase with an increase in static bed height and decrease with an increase in particle size. 3. For the same particle size, the particle of low density can obtain higher overall heat transfer coefficient than that of high density.

  • A total of 134 patients with stage 1 of non-small cell lung cancer treated by carbon ion beam of HIMAC NIRS were investigated for control rate and delivered dose. The delivered dose of every patient was converted to biological effective dose (BED) of LQ model using fraction number, dose per fraction and alpha beta ratio which shows the maximum correlation between BED and tumor control. The BED of every patient was classified to establish a BED response curve for control. Assuming fraction numbers, dose response curves were introduced from BED response curve. The total doses to realize several control rates were obtained for the treatment of small fraction number.

  • First, methods of numerical analysis of gas-particle flows is classified into micro, meso and macro scale approaches based on the concept of multi-scale mechanics. Next, the explanation moves on to discrete particle simulation where motion of individual particles is calculated numerically using the Newtonian equations of motion. The author focuses on the cases where particle-to-particle interaction has significant effects on the phenomena. Concerning the particle-to-particle interaction, two cases are considered: the one is collision-dominated flows and the other is the contact-dominated flows. To treat this interaction mathematically, techniques named DEM(Distinct Element Method) or DSMC (Direct Simulation Monte Carlo) have been developed DEM, which has been developed in the field of soil mechanics, is useful for the contact -dominated flows and DSMC method, developed in molecular gas flows, is for the collision-dominated flows. Combining DEM or DSMC with CFD (computer fluid dynamics), the discrete particle simulation becomes a more practical tool for industrial flows because not only the particle-particle interaction but particle-fluid interaction can be handled. As examples of simulations, various results are shown, such as hopper flows, particle segregation phenomena, particle mixing in a rotating drum, dense phase pneumatic conveying, spouted bed, dense phase fluidized bed, fast circulating fluidized bed and so on.
