The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of social participation among female baby boomers. The key research questions were asked in what kind of activities do female baby boomers engage as social participation? The in-depth interview was used with 11 female baby boomers who were born between 1955 to 1963. The interview text were analyzed by the qualitative study method. The findings are as follows. First, the most common type of social participation was having hobbies and leisure activities, and the other were participating in religious activities, learning activities, volunteer activities and on-line club activities. Second, social participation gave them meanings such as joy, satisfaction, and experiences of seeing the new world as well as opportunities to make up low sense of self-esteem formed in their young age. Third, they were considering it was time to change their social participation. The cases who were actively engaging in social participation considered old age as 'the process of reducing social participation'. Some other cases considered to 'share hobbies with spouse', and to 'achieve new goals and dreams'. The results showed that female baby boomers started their social participation in their middle ages when they became free from their children's education. The level of the involvement in social participation was reduced in their old age. Surprisingly, some interviewees planned to accomplish their dreams and goals that they haven't achieved yet. These differences among the cases could be attributed to the individual characteristics such as personality, birth order, economic and educational background, and to the social relationship.
The purpose of this study is to find out leisure constraints of the elderly and to examine how these constraints influence their participation in leisure activities and life satisfaction. The data analysis of 291 senior citizens over 60 years old were conducted, the research results are as follows: first, leisure constraints of senior citizens stem from individual, societal, economic, family constraints. It indicates that anyone of constraints did not exclusively determine leisure constraints. Rather, the result implies that leisure constraints for the elderly is from multifaceted levels of social system. Second, participation in leisure activities positively worked on life satisfaction. Third, leisure constraints of the elderly directly influenced their participation in leisure activities and life satisfaction. In conclusion, to revitalize senior citizens' participation in leisure activities is critical in advancing their life satisfaction. Nationwide positive and supportive social environment for their leisure participation should be established first, on which social and legal systems should be consequently organized. At the same time, social supports to provide opportunities for their leisure participation are required for the future senior citizens.

The results of this study, Demographic variables appeared to affect social-participation activities through the gender, age, religion, partner and occupation, and Only the presence of the occupation showed the effect on successful aging. And in society participation activities sub-variable, only self-development participation showed a significant impact on the successful aging. Ego resilience of the elderly appeared to have a full-mediated effects on the relationship between social participation activities and successful aging. However, the relationship of self-development engagement activities showed a partial mediating effect. Based on these findings, I suggest practical measures for the elderly social participation activities and successful aging, and was revisited the importance of self-resilience.
Although previous studies have found that social participation activities are related to older people's life satisfaction and health status, the rate of social participation activities among older people is still low. The current study examined the relationship between age identity and social participation activities among older people and the extent to which this relationship differs by gender. Secondary data from the Survey of Living Conditions of Korean Older Persons were used to test the research hypothesis. Hierarchical multiple regression models were tested using a nationally representative sample of 10,451 community-dwelling older persons aged 65 and above. Older people who have older age identity were less likely to involve in social participation activities than those who have younger age identity. However, this relationship was only significant for older women. The findings suggest the need for attention to age identity and gender differences when promoting social participation activities.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of participation in social activities on the subjective health satisfaction of the elderly in groups with and without chronic diseases. Methods : Data were used from the "2014 the Korean Elderly Survey" and the subjects were 10,451 persons aged 65 years or older. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 18.0 statistical package. Results : The results of this study were as follows. In the case of the elderly without chronic diseases, only the employment status (${\beta}=.135$, p<.01) had a significant effect on the health of the elderly. In the case of elderly people with chronic illness, participation in lifelong education (${\beta}=.183$, p<.001), participation in social group (${\beta}=.277$, p<.001), volunteer work experience (${\beta}=.060$, p<.05), and employment status (${\beta}=.342$, p<.001) had a significant effect on health. This study examines the human capital, economic capital, and psychological factors that influence social participation among the elderly in the future. The data, 'Survey on the Elderly in 2014', were collected from 'The Ministry of Health & Welfare' and the 'Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs'. The samples included 10,279 elderly people who were over 65 years of age. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the research model. The findings are as follows. First, the highest participation awareness level of all was for the hobbies and leisure activities, and the lowest participation awareness level was for volunteer activities. Second, human capital factors such as age, education level, and health status, and economic capital factors such as household consumption expenditure and standard of living signigicant affected social participation awareness among the elderly. Psychological factors such as self-esteem, depression, and the subjective age of becoming elderly, also affected the social participation awareness. Third, awareness differed by sex. In particular, age and depression were restrictions of social participation awareness that were more common among elderly women than among elderly men, although single women were more likely to participate in religious, learning, and hobby and leisure activities. In contrast, chronic diseases and household consumption expenditures were more restrictive of social participation awareness among elderly men compared to elderly women. These results show that human capital, economic capital, and psychological factors heavily influence the social participation awareness of the elderly, although the degree of influence of these factors differs by sex.

This study aims to identify forecasting factors of baby boomer's social participation desire. For this purpose, I utilized Hyun-Jung Kang(2012)'s data whose 1,115 sample were collected based on residential area and gender. The major findings are as follows; First, 77.7% of baby boomers are actually participating in economic activities. 27.0% in volunteering activities and 79.3% in leisure activities. 80.9% of baby boomers have intention to participate in economic activities after retirement, 76.7% in volunteering activities after retirement and 82.2% in leisure activities after retirement. Second, looking at the relationship between current social activity participation and intention to participate after retirement, those who are currently having social activities turn out to have higher intention to participate social activities after retirement. Those who wish to participate in social activities, although they don't participate in social activities currently, turn out to be 55.8% for economic activities, 70.6% for volunteering activities and 66.5% for leisure activities. Third, whether they are currently participating in social activities turns out to be most compelling forecasting factor for the desire on social participation after retirement. These results were discussed in terms of the continuity theory. and proposed that you need from the preparation of Middle - aged to activate the participation of important social variables known as old age life satisfaction.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between social participation activities, cognitive function, and depression of middle and old single-person households in consideration of social problems such as aging population and increasing single-person households. For the analysis, path analysis and multi-group analysis were conducted. As a result of the analysis, it was found that social participation activities of middle and old single-person households reduced depression through increased cognitive function, and the positive effects of social participation activities were stronger in groups of dementia. Based on these results, we discussed ways to promote social participation activities, implications for developing programs that can help cognitive function or mental health, and suggested the need for programs or treatment methods to promote social participation rather than isolated treatment in nursing facilities.
