  • This study aims at analyzing determinants of non-farming income activities of female farmers, and presenting how to support their participation in non-farming activities. The result of logistic regressive analysis whose subjects are female farmers in the Chungnam area indicates that human and economic capital variables that can predict non-farming income activity participation statistically significantly are persons at the age of 40s to 50s and female farmers who returned to the rural areas. Farming characteristic variables are households that receive subsidiary and participate in two different types of farming whose main farming is rice. The female farmers who spend longer hours doing household chores participate in non-farming income activities more actively. In terms of policy and on-site response variables, the interest in farming and farming businesses shows positive relation, and that of farming and community organization participation presents negative relation. These analysis results indicate that the local government must present the policy that can select non-farming income activity participation groups strategically. This study suggest that it is necessary to expand community centered-non-farming income activities, and to expand or make laws to support female farmer's participation in non-farming activities.

  • This study examines the human capital, economic capital, and psychological factors that influence social participation among the elderly in the future. The data, 'Survey on the Elderly in 2014', were collected from 'The Ministry of Health & Welfare' and the 'Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs'. The samples included 10,279 elderly people who were over 65 years of age. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the research model. The findings are as follows. First, the highest participation awareness level of all was for the hobbies and leisure activities, and the lowest participation awareness level was for volunteer activities. Second, human capital factors such as age, education level, and health status, and economic capital factors such as household consumption expenditure and standard of living signigicant affected social participation awareness among the elderly. Psychological factors such as self-esteem, depression, and the subjective age of becoming elderly, also affected the social participation awareness. Third, awareness differed by sex. In particular, age and depression were restrictions of social participation awareness that were more common among elderly women than among elderly men, although single women were more likely to participate in religious, learning, and hobby and leisure activities. In contrast, chronic diseases and household consumption expenditures were more restrictive of social participation awareness among elderly men compared to elderly women. These results show that human capital, economic capital, and psychological factors heavily influence the social participation awareness of the elderly, although the degree of influence of these factors differs by sex.

For this purpose, I utilized Hyun-Jung Kang(2012)'s data whose 1,115 sample were collected based on residential area and gender. The major findings are as follows; First, 77.7% of baby boomers are actually participating in economic activities. 27.0% in volunteering activities and 79.3% in leisure activities. 80.9% of baby boomers have intention to participate in economic activities after retirement, 76.7% in volunteering activities after retirement and 82.2% in leisure activities after retirement. Second, looking at the relationship between current social activity participation and intention to participate after retirement, those who are currently having social activities turn out to have higher intention to participate social activities after retirement. Those who wish to participate in social activities, although they don't participate in social activities currently, turn out to be 55.8% for economic activities, 70.6% for volunteering activities and 66.5% for leisure activities. Third, whether they are currently participating in social activities turns out to be most compelling forecasting factor for the desire on social participation after retirement. These results were discussed in terms of the continuity theory. and proposed that you need from the preparation of Middle - aged to activate the participation of important social variables known as old age life satisfaction.

The survey respondents were 4,961 women with disabilities aged from 45 to 65 who participated in one of the first series of the PSED(2nd to 8th). Results of the analysis showed the economic activities of middle-aged and older women with disabilities and level of disability were correlated with a statistical significance in the analysis phase 1 and 2, and economic activity participation affected life satisfaction level through the level of disability as a parameter, indicating that a mediating effect does exist. This study suggests that to enhance the life satisfaction level of middle-aged and older women with disabilities through participation in economic activities, an employment scheme based on their level of disability is necessary.
