  • The partially restrained smart CFT (concrete filled tube) column-to-beam connections with top-seat split T connections show various behavior characteristics according to the changes in the diameter and tightening force of the fastener, the geometric shape of T-stub, and material properties. This paper presents results from a systematic three-dimensional nonlinear finite element study on the structural behavior of the top-seat split T connections subjected to cyclic loadings. This connection includes super-elastic shape memory alloy (SMA) T-stub and rods to obtain the re-centering capabilities as well as great energy dissipation properties of the CFT composite frame. A wide scope of additional structural behaviors explain the influences of the top-seat split T connections parameters, such as the different thickness and gage distances of split T-stub.

  • This study evaluated the mechanical properties and crack-healing abilities of zirconia composite ceramics. The six kinds of specimens used were: partially stabilized zirconia (Z) and five zirconia composite (ZS, ZST1, ZST2, ZST3, and ZST5) with SiC and $TiO_2$. There was not a large difference between the Vickers hardness of the six types of zirconia ceramics. The bending strength of the ZS specimen degraded rapidly, but the zirconia specimens with $TiO_2$ (ZST1, ZST2, ZST3, and ZST5) showed improved strength. Therefore, it was determined that the bending strength is affected by the crystallization, which is due to the addition of SiC and $TiO_2$. From the crack-healing conditions having the highest bending strength, monolithic zirconia retained its cracks, while the specimens of four types with SiC healed their cracks.

  • Steel-Concrete composite girders have been used since early in the 1920's due to their advantages, which are lower weight, increasement of stiffness, slenderness, long span. However, in designing short to continuous composite bridges, negative moment occurs in mid-support and creates problems such as cracks in the concrete slab. Therefore, partially composite bridges are considered. In this time, slab-anchor is used in these. If the stiffness of shear connectors is insufficient, slip would happen at the contact surface. Partial interaction is the case that takes account of slips. In this paper, the evaluation of initial shear stiffness of slab-anchor in composite bridges is obtained from Push-Out specimen. Also, finite element analyses which uses the initial shear stiffness of slab-anchor got the experiment are carried out on simple composite girder and continuous composite girder. Futhermore, the ratio of composite according to various shear stiffness are investigated and the classification according to the ratio of composite is proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate analytically the flexural behavior of beam reinforced by an alkali-activated slag-based fiber-reinforced composite. The materials and mixture proportion were selected to manufacture an alkali-activated slag-based fiber-reinforced composite with high tensile strain capacity over 7% and compressive strength and tension tests were performed. The composite showed a compressive strength of 32.7MPa, a tensile strength of 8.43MPa, and a tensile strain capacity of 7.52%. In order to analyze the flexural behavior of beams reinforced by ultra-high-ductile composite, nonlinear sectional analysis was peformed for four types of beams. Analysis showed that the flexural strength of beam reinforced partially by ultra-high-ductile composite increased by 8.0%, and the flexural strength of beam reinforced fully by ultra-high-ductile composite increased by 24.7%. It was found that the main reason of low improvement in flexural strength is the low tensile strain at the bottom of beam. The tensile strain at bottom corresponding to the flexural strength was 1.38% which was 18.4% of tensile strain capacity of the composite.

  • This paper experimentally and analytically elucidates the shear behavior and shear bearing capacity of partially prefabricated steel reinforced concrete (PPSRC) columns and hollow partially prefabricated steel reinforced concrete (HPSRC) columns. Seven specimens including five PPSRC column specimens and two HPSRC column specimens were tested under static monotonic loading. In the test, the influences of shear span aspect ratio and difference of cast-in-place concrete strength on the shear behavior of PPSRC and HPSRC columns were investigated. Based on the test results, the failure pattern, the load-displacement behavior and the shear capacity were focused and analyzed. The test results demonstrated that all the column specimens failed in shear failure mode with high bearing capacity and good deformability. Smaller shear span aspect ratio and higher strength of inner concrete resulted in higher shear bearing capacity, with more ductile and better deformability. Furthermore, calculation formula for predicting the ultimate shear capacity of the PPSRC and HPSRC columns were proposed on the basis of the experimental results.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-zirconia bioceramics, which have excellent biocompatibility with tissue of bone and tooth and good mechanical properties, were synthesized, and their properties and biocompatibility were investigated. HAp powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67 and pH 11 by precipitation method. A fine spherical monodispersed ZrO2 powders were prepared by metal alkoxide method, and then they were partially stabilized with 10 mol% CaO by solid state reaction at 1300℃. HAp-zirconia composites were prepared by sintering of these HAp mixed with various amount CaO-partially stabillized zirconia (PSZ). When HAp containing 15 wt% PSZ with 10 mol% CaO (PSZ(10C)) were sintered at 1250℃, it was prevented to decompose into TCP and ZrO2 was uniformly dispersed at HAp matrix. Mechanical strength of these sintered bodies were increased by addition of 15 wt% PSZ(10C), the bending strength of compacts fired at 1250℃ was 165 MPa. HAp-PSZ composites chemically bonded each other in Ringer's solution and the component of bonded layer was HAp. These composites did not prevent cell-growing and exhibit any cytotoxic effects.

  • This paper presents a study on the structural behaviour of modular steel scaffolds through both experimental and numerical investigations. Three one-storey and three two-storey modular steel scaffolds were built and tested to failure in order to examine the structural behaviour of typical modular steel scaffolds. Details of the tests and their test results were presented in this paper. Moreover, an advanced non-linear analysis method was employed to evaluate the load carrying capacities of these scaffolds under different support conditions. Comparisons between the experimental and the numerical results on the structural behaviour of these modular steel scaffolds were also presented. Moreover, the restraining effects of external supports in practical situations were also studied through finite element methods. The predicted load carrying capacities and deformations at failure of these models under partially restrained conditions were found to be close to the experimental results. A codified design method for column buckling with modified slenderness ratios was adopted for practical design of modular steel scaffolds.

  • The present paper investigates the stochastic seismic responses of steel structure systems with Partially Restrained (PR) connections by using Perturbation based Stochastic Finite Element (PSFEM) method. A stiffness matrix formulation of steel systems with PR connections and PSFEM and MCS formulations of structural systems are given. Based on the formulations, a computer program in FORTRAN language has been developed, and stochastic seismic analyses of steel frame and bridge systems have been performed for different types of connections. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are assumed to be random variables in the analyses. The Kocaeli earthquake occurred in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are considered to be random variables. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method.

  • Y-TZP/mullite composites were prepared by the infiltration of Y-TZP precursor into partially reaction-sintered mullite. The addition of Y-TZP(~7.2 wt%) increased the bend strength(207 MPa), fracture toughness(4.6MPa.m1/2) and Vickers microhardness(853kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$) of the uninfiltrated mullite sintered at 162$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h by more than 75, 70 and 105%, respectively. Residual alumina-rich glass was observed at a mullite/mullite junction, due to the mullitization reaction of silica melt with crystalline $\alpha$-Al2O3 during a final sintering. Although ZrO2 inclusions improved the final sintered density of mullite they did not effectively prevent its grain growth.

  • The wire-arc process is a low-cost thermal spray method simply utilizes electrical energy to melt the feedstock wire. It is more userful for field applications, especially to coat large surface area. In this paper, a special Fe-based alloy coatings by using the wire-arc process were developed. Nanoscale composite coatings were achieved either during spraying or through a post heat treatment. As-sprayed Fe-based alloy coatings had been an amorphous matrix structure, after heating to $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes a solid state transformation occurred in the some fraction of amorphous matrix which resulted in the formation of nanostructured recrystallized phase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and field emotional scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) were applied to analyze the microstructure of the coatings. Additionally hardness and bend resistance of the Fe-based alloy coatings were examined, and these results were compared with those of partially stabilized zirconia(PSZ) coatings by using the plasma spray process.
