  • Wireless carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) systems are widely used but show extremely different transmission efficiency according to the operation environment. Simulation or prototype deployment is needed to see the transmission efficiency of a wireless CSMA system with the partial packet retransmission scheme. The lower bound for the transmission efficiency of such a system is found mathematically in this work. This shows how much the partial packet retransmission scheme improves the transmission efficiency quantitatively. It also shows that the maximum throughput is obtained at higher offered load compared to the conventional CSMA system without the partial packet transmission. The result of this work can be applied to IEEE 802.11 networks or wireless mesh networks.

  • We investigate the effects on performance of using a partial retransmission mechanism in Optical Burst Switched(OBS) networks. In our scheme, the lost segments of a burst are retransmitted in the OBS layer. We also propose an optical resource reservation using the partial retransmission mechanism. Our scheme attempts to improve the burst contention resolution and optical channel utilization. The performance of the proposed mechanism is analyzed by NS2 simulations. Simulation results indicate that link utilization of the OBS network is improved makedly at the expense of signaling and ingress buffers.

  • Since error compensation schemes guaranteeing high reliability are required in wireless communication systems for the transmission of the large amount of data, as an efficient error compensation scheme the turbo HARQ scheme combining automatic repeat request and turbo coding has been studied in many places in the literature. In the case of conventional turbo HARQ schemes, the transmitter recognizing NAK signals repetitively sends the whole unit packet to the receiver although the received packet can be partially correctable. Through two successive processes, selection of uncorrectable error data and retransmission of only the relevant parts of the information data, transmission efficiency can be improved. In this paper, we present an error data selection criterion for retransmission using the sign transitions of A Posteriori values and propose a tubo HARQ scheme based on the partial retransmission technique. Through a computer simulation, we show and analyze the performance of the proposed scheme with transmission efficiency.

  • Recently, in distribution market, demand for electronic shelf label system is increasing gradually to provide the accurate price immediately and detailed product information to consumers and reduce operation costs. Most of electronic shelf label system companies develop the full-graphic display device to display a wide variety of product information as well as the exact price. Our system had introduced Go-Back-N retransmission method in the early. However, we encountered performance problems that it delayed updating of the electronic shelf label system and exhausted the battery life time. Proposed adaptive image retransmission technique based on the selective scheme is that tags of electronic shelf label system recognize idle time of transmission cycle and require partial image retransmission to sever by itself. As a result, it can acquire much more opportunities of partial image retransmission within the same period and increase reception rate of full image for each tags. The experimental result shows that adaptive image retransmission technique's reception rate of full image for each tags is approximately 4% higher than existing previous works. And total battery life time increases 30 hours because tag reduce wake-up time as it receive only lost data instead of whole data.

  • In this paper, we propose a combining scheme for partial IR based hybrid ARQ in MIMO systems. The proposed combining scheme is a symbol-level combining scheme for repeatedly transmitted systematic symbols in partial IR based hybrid ARQ. In this paper, it is shown that the proposed combining scheme can also enhance the detection performance of the parity symbols that are newly transmitted in each retransmission. Simulation results show that the proposed combining scheme significantly improves the performance of the partial IR based hybrid ARQ compared to the cases of the conventional bit-level combining scheme, especially with the ZF detection.

  • The fast retransmit and fast recovery algorithm of TCP Reno, when multiple packets in the same window are lost, cannot recover them without RTO (Retransmission Timeout). TCP New-Reno can recover multiple lost packets by extending fast recovery using partial acknowledgement. If the retransmitted packet is lost again during fast recovery, however, RTO cannot be avoided. In this paper, we propose an algorithm called "Duplicate Acknowledgement Counting(DAC)" to alleviate this problem. DAC can detect the retransmitted packet loss by counting duplicate ACKs. Conditions that a lost packet can be recovered by loss recovery of TCP Reno, TCP New-Reno and TCP New-Reno using DAC are derived by modeling loss recovery behavior of each TCP. We calculate the loss recovery probability for random packet loss probability numerically, and show that DAC can improve loss recovery behavior of TCP New-Reno.

  • Medium access control is critical in wireless networks for efficient spectrum utilization. In this paper, we introduce a novel collision resolution method based on the technique of known interference cancellation, and propose a new MAC protocol named as CR-MAC, in which AP tries to decode all the collided data packets by combining partial retransmissions and known interference cancellation. As the collided transmissions are fully utilized, less retransmission is required, especially in a crowded network. The NS-2simulation and MATLAB numerical results show that, under various network settings, CR-MAC performs much better than the IEEE 802.11 DCF in terms of the aggregation throughput and the expected packet delay.

  • Multimedia streams transmitted through the Internet have a strict playback delay time. Multimedia data arriving aster the playback time cannot be played in the receiver and are discarded. Thus, this paper proposed a protocol, in which the multimedia stream server determines whether data can be played in the receiver before sending the data. The proposed model has a PSCTP sub-layer on top of existing PR-SCTP and decides whether to send data messages, which have come from the multimedia applicationserver, and which PR-SCTP stream the data will be sent to. In addition, the proposed model uses the differentiated retransmission function of PR-SCTP. We evaluated the performance of SCTP, PR-SCTP and PSCTP using NS2 simulator. According to the results of the evaluation, the PSCTP protocol decreased the volume of transmission and increased the video decodable ratio compared to other protocols.
