  • This paper discusses two problems with LR parsing with regard to constructing parsing tables with feature-based grammars. First, we show that traditional LR parsing methods suffer from nontermination and nondeterminism problems when they are applied to feature-based grammars. We then present an LR method for feature-based grammars that avoids both nontermination and nondetermisim by making use of partial information of a feature structure. Second, we describe the problem of adapting LR parsing to feature-based grammars with schematic rules (i.e., rules that do not contain enough information to construct parsing tables). To remedy this problem, we propose a rule inference algorithm which instantiates underspecified rules into more specified ones containing enough information.

  • This paper deals with the syntactic analysis algorithms of Korean sentence and system for machine translation. The parts of speech and constituients are syntactically analized at unified view-points and then an effective classification algorithm is proposed. The constituients which are applied an inverse movement transformation algorithm are processed with the concept of attribute. Syntactic analysis system is constructed to generate parsing table including the deep structure of sentence by lexicon proper to the combinational property of Korean and breadth-first searching method. The results obtained from the system program are shown as the parsing table of source sentences.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for on-line rightward japanese parsing is proposed. The ambiguity in on-line parsing is accumulated until the input is completely finished, since there is not a space between words in the japanese sentence. Thus the algorithm for morphological analysis, based on modified chart, is used in solving it. And the number of searching a word in dirctionary for morphological analysis is also a puzzling problem. The japanese sentence, consist of N characters, has logically its maximum number of N(N+1)/2 searches in the ordinary on-line analysis, which is nearly twice as many as normal off-line. In this paper, the matter is settled through the modification of dictionary format. In experiment, we can accomplish the rate of analysis which is nearly equal to that of off-line parsing. And it becomes clear that the longer a sentence is, the better an analysis efficiency is.

  • This paper proposes a method of the automatic recognition of the handprinted Hanguel patterns. A certain pattern oriented basic letters is normalized to the prototype Hanguel patten by the linking compansation and nomalization algorithm. Tree grammar is used in recognition process. Compared with the previous method. automata processing is simplified and the error is reduced by the new parsing method. This method shows the effectiveness for the constrained pattern. We expect that the new parsing method is very useful for the on-line pattern recognition.

  • This paper presents an implementation of a gramar of Dynamic Syntax for Japanese. Dynamic Syntax is a grammar formalism which enables a parser to process a sentence in an incremental fashion, establishing the semantic representation. Currently the application of lexical rules and transition rules in Dynamic Syntax is carried out arbitrarily and this leads to inefficient parsing. This paper provides an algorithm of rule application and partitioned parsing state for efficient parsing with special reference to processing Japanese, which is one of head-final languages. At the present stage the parser is still small but can parse scrambled sentences, relative clause constructions, and embedded clauses. The parser is written in Prolog and this paper shows that the parser can process null arguments in a complex sentence in Japanese.

  • In this paper, we observe various syntactic information for Korean parsing and propose a method to learn constraints and improve the efficiency of a parsing model by using the constraints. The proposed method has the following three characteristics. First, it improves the parsing efficiency since we use constraints that can prevent the parser from generating unsuitable candidates. Second, it is robust on a given Korean sentence because the attributes for the constraints are selected based on the syntactic and lexical idiosyncrasy of Korean. Third, it is easy to acquire constraints automatically from a treebank by using a decision tree learning algorithm. The experimental results show that the parser using acquired constraints can reduce the number of overgenerated candidates up to 1/2~1/3 of candidates and it runs 2~3 times faster than the one without any constraints.

  • The performance of an English-Korean machine translation system depends heavily on its English parser. The parser in this paper is a part of the rule-based English-Korean MT system, which includes many syntactic rules and performs the chart-based parsing. The parser generates too many structures due to many syntactic rules, so much time and memory are required. The rule-based parser has difficulty in analyzing and translating the long sentences including the commas because they cause high parsing complexity. In this paper, we propose the 3-phase parsing method with sentence segmentation to efficiently translate the long sentences appearing in usual. Each phase of the syntactic analysis applies its own independent syntactic rules in order to reduce parsing complexity. For the purpose, we classify the syntactic rules into 3 classes and design the 3-phase parsing algorithm. Especially, the syntactic rules in the 3rd class are for the sentence structures composed with commas. We present the automatic rule acquisition method for 3rd class rules from the syntactic analysis of the corpus, with which we aim to continuously improve the coverage of the parsing. The experimental results shows that the proposed 3-phase parsing method is superior to the prior parsing method using only intra-sentence segmentation in terms of the parsing speed/memory efficiency with keeping the translation quality.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified deterministic Korean dependency parser using a projectivity. The modified parser is improved by finding errors, such as cross dependency, from the original parsing results and correcting them according to the projectivity and head-final principles. Our parser also uses parsing history information in addition to rich features, which only a deterministic algorithm can use. Results on the modified parser for ETRI(2005) corpus, that consists of complex sentences, show that our parser outperforms other parsers.

  • This paper proposes an efficient algorithm of extracting anchor blocks for a semantic structure of a news video. We define the FRFD to calculate the frame difference of anchor face position rather than simply uses the general frame difference. Since, The FRFD value is sensitive to existing face in frame, anchor block can be efficiently extracted. In this paper, an algorithm to extract a face position using partial decoded MPEG data is also proposed. In this way a news video can be structured semantically using the extracted anchor blocks.
