Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore differences of fathers' and mothers' parenting behaviors, sharing, and stresses by levels of family system functioning in families with young children. Methods: The sample of this study included 1,611 first married couples having at least one child aged under 5 years in the 6th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC). Results: It was found that fathers' cohesion and flexibility were higher than mothers'. It was also found that there were significant differences in fathers' and mothers' parenting behaviors, sharing, and stresses by the level of family system functioning. Conclusions: This study suggested that the family system functioning are related to parenting in families with young children. Further implication were discussed for enhancing family system functioning and parenting behaviors of young children.
This study aimed to identify the moderating effect of the father's support on the relationship between the mother's parenting guilt and her parenting behavior. For the goal, the present study 1) analysed the differences in the mother's parenting guilt as the general variables of the mother and child, and 2) examined the main effects and interaction effects between the mother's parenting guilt and her spouse's support on the mother's parenting behavior. The participants of the study were 350 mothers whose infants and toddlers were attending a day-care centers in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo. The summary of this study is as follows. First, the mothers younger than 29 years old reported more parenting guilt than the mothers aged 35 to 39. Also, the working mothers felt more parenting guilt than the unemployed mothers. Second, when the main effect and interaction effects among the mother's parenting guilt, parenting behaviors, and the father's parenting support are analysed, the interaction effects were statistically significant with only rejection control parenting behaviors. The result means that even if the mother feels a lot of parenting guilt, if the father's parenting support is high, her rejection control parenting behaviors tend to appear less. The present study suggests that the father's parenting support plays an important role in the reduction of the mother's negative parenting behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the parenting behaviors which are represented in traditional fairy tales and creative stories. In this study the parenting behaviors of 44 traditional fairy tales and 52 creative stories for young children were analyzed according to the Korean Maternal Behavior Inventories (KMBI). The results are as follows : First, active participation, affectionate behaviors, reasonable guide, and consistency were represented more in creative stories than in traditional fairy tales and authoritarian control was represented more in traditional fairy tales than in creative stories. Second, fathers in creative stories participated more actively in their children's teaching than fathers on traditional fairy tales. Third, mothers in creative stories showed more affectionate parenting behaviors, participated more actively and showed more consistency in the relationship with their children. Fourth, the parents in traditional fairy tales showed more achievement-oriented parenting behaviors, especially in father-son relationship than others.
This study examined the effects of maternal parenting behaviors, children's social information processing, daily hassles, and emotional regulation on school-age children's aggressive behaviors using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) analysis. Subjects were 589 children in 4, 5, 6th grade and their mothers from three elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and SEM analysis by SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 4.0. The SEM shows differences between overtly aggressive and relationally aggressive children. Maternal parenting behaviors affected their children's overt aggression through children's emotional regulation. Additionally, maternal parenting behaviors affected children's overt aggression through children's daily hassles and social information processing. Maternal parenting behaviors influenced children's relational aggression through children's daily hassles and children's social information processing.
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to the parental role in satisfaction and parenting behaviors. The subjects were 102 employed mothers and 110 unemployed mothers of 5-year-old children living in Seoul, Korea. The measures were questionnaire, the Parental Role Satisfaction Scale and the Parenting Behaviors Scale. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, frequency, percentile, mean, correlation, multiple regression and Chow-test. Consistent with Belsky's model of the determinants of parenting, the parental role satisfaction and parenting behaviors of both employed and unemployed mothers were influenced by child characteristics, parent characteristics, and family factors. Results showed that the parental role satisfaction of both employed and unemployed mothers was correlated to child's birth order, temperament and health of child, mothers' and fathers' age, fathers' educational level, and family income. Parenting behaviors were also correlated to sex of child, child's birth order, temperament of child, parental educational level, and family income for employed mothers and to health of child, mothers' and fathers' age, mothers' educational level, and family income for unemployed mothers. Especially, father's age for employed mothers, and child's temperament for unemployed mothers, were the most strongly related variables for parental role satisfaction. On the other hand, family income for employed mothers, and fathers' age for unemployed mothers were the most strongly related variables for parenting behaviors.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural relationship and influence of parents' family interaction, parenting efficacy, and child internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors. Methods: 1,418 children and their parents, and survey data from a panel study on Korean children (2014), were used to analyze the structural equation model. Results: First, the mother's family interaction had direct influence on their parenting efficacy, as well as their child's internalization and externalization. Second, the father's family interaction had a direct influence only on the internal problem behaviors of the child, and child external problem behaviors were influenced through the father's parenting efficacy. Third, parenting efficacy mediated the effects of family interaction on the problem behavior of children. Especially, the father's family interaction was found to affect child variables through the mother's parenting efficacy. Finally, the internalizing problem behaviors of the child mediated the effects of the parents' family interaction and parenting efficacy on child externalizing problem behaviors. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study are significant in that the factors of father, mother, and child are interrelated, and that parent interaction has varying influence on the problems of their children.
This study examined whether parenting behaviors as perceived by low-income children have indirect effects on their school adjustment through ego-identity. The subjects were 148 6th grade children selected from three elementary schools in Seoul; family income was less than 2,000,000 won, Statistical techniques were Person's Correlation and Simple and Multiple Regression. Findings were that (1) Perceived parenting behavior was a significant predictor of the school adjustment in low-income children. (2) Perceived parenting behavior was a significant predictor of the ego-identity of low-income children. (3) When the effect of perceived supportive parenting behaviors was controlled, the effect of ego-identity of low-income children was significant. However, when the effect of ego-identity of low-income children was controlled, the effect of perceived supportive parenting behaviors became non-significant.
Relations between mother-infant interactive behaviors and parenting-related variables were analyzed in a sample of 72 infants (35 boys and 37 girls, average age=31 mo.) and their mothers in Ulsan, Korea. Parents' views on children, parenting stress, fathers' participation in parenting and social support were measured using questionnaires and mother-infant interactive behaviors were observed using the 3-bags test. Among the parenting-related variables, parents' views on children were related significantly with mothers' emotional expressions & infant's participation with mothers. Social support was correlated with mother's behaviors, including positive rewards and emotional expressions. Mother-infant interactive behaviors were closely correlated with one another: Mothers' positive behaviors such as overall reactivity and cognitive stimulation were correlated positively with infants' positive behaviors, including sustained attention and positive affect. Future studies will provide us with greater insights into the mechanisms underlying the effects of these parenting-related variables on infant behavior and development.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parenting behavior and peer interaction on externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers. The data of 953 49~55 month old preschoolers and their parents were extracted from the Korean Children Panel Survey of Child-Care Policy Research Institute(2012). This study was conducted with Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). The results of this study were as follows. First, parenting behavior had a direct influence on externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers. Second, parenting behavior had a direct influence on preschoolers' peer interaction. Third, preschoolers' peer interaction had a direct influence on externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers. Fourth, preschoolers' peer interaction had mediating effects on the relationship between parenting behavior and externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers.
The present study was designed to examine the structural relationship between mothers' perceptions of their relationships with their parents and husbands (as the predictors of parenting self-efficacy), mothers' parenting self-efficacy (PSE), and parenting behaviors among contemporary Korean mothers. A sample of 95 Korean mothers of pre-school,1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade elementary school children in Seoul, South Korea were recruited. Mothers were asked to respond to a survey that captured mothers' perceptions of their relationships with their parents and husbands, PSE, and their parenting behaviors. Structural equation modeling(SEM) was applied to analyze the hypothesized model. The results indicate that mothers who perceive their relationships with their own parents as positive were more likely to have higher PSE. In addition, mothers who reported higher PSE levels were less likely to be inconsistent in their parenting behaviors and more likely to be responsive in their parenting behaviors. The results of this study underscore the importance of PSE as a psychological resource that enables contemporary Korean mothers to parent in positive ways. Furthermore, these findings emphasize the importance of mothers' perceptions of their social relationships as a factor that contributes to higher PSE.
