  • This paper provides a new approach for modeling of vector quantizer(VQ) followed by analysis and design of subband codecs with imbedded VQ's. We compute the mean squared reconstruction error(MSE) which depend on N the number of entries in each codebook, k the length of each codeword, and on the filter bank(FB) coefficients in subband codecs. We show that the optimum M-band filter bank structure in presence of pdf-optimized vector quantizer can be designed by a suitable choice of equivalent scalar quantizer parameters. Specific design examples have been developed for two different classes of filter banks, paraunitary and the biorthogonal FB and the 2 channel case. These theoretical results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Subband coding is to divide the signal frequency band into a set of uncorrelated frequency bands by filtering and then to encode each of these subbands using a bit allocation rationale matched to the signal energy in that subband. The actual coding of the subband signal can be done using waveform encoding techniques such as PCM, DPCM and vector quantizer(VQ) in order to obtain higher data compression. Most researchers have focused on the error in the quantizer, but not on the overall reconstruction error and its dependence on the filter bank. This paper provides a thorough analysis of subband codecs and further development of optimum filter bank design using vector quantizer. We compute the mean squared reconstruction error(MSE) which depends on N the number of entries in each code book, k the length of each code word, and on the filter bank coefficients. We form this MSE measure in terms of the equivalent quantization model and find the optimum FIR filter coefficients for each channel in the M-band structure for a given bit rate, given filter length, and given input signal correlation model. Specific design examples are worked out for 4-tap filter in 2-band paraunitary filter bank structure. These optimum paraunitary filter coefficients are obtained by using Monte Carlo simulation. We expect that the results of this work could be contributed to study on the optimum design of subband codecs using vector quantizer.

  • Multiwavelet coefficients can be constructed from the multi-scaling coefficients by using the factorization for paraunitary matrices. In this paper we present a procedure for parametrizing all possible multi-wavelet coefficients corresponding to the multiscaling coefficients of DGHM type.

  • When finite length image signal is decomposed into M-band synthesized using M-band orthogonal wavelet transform, the boundary signal of image are not reconstructed perfectly. for boundary signals to be reconstructed perfectly, different type filter bank or technique is applied to them when the dimension of analysed is proposed. It can be designed using the singular value decomposition of boundary perfect reconstruction matrix which is obtained from paraunitary matrix which is obtained from paraunitary matrix. And it is also discussed to design the boundary filter bank for improving the coding performance when it is applied to subband coder. The proposed boundary filter bank shows 7% gains in PSNR compared with reflected method.

  • In this paper, certain scaling functions are generated using the dyadic subband tree structure and applied to a time-hopping, pulse position modulation, ultra-wideband (TH-PPM UWB) system. Scaling functions can be obtained by iterating a lowpass filter at each level using a critically sampled dyadic tree. The performance of the TH-PPM UWB system employing scaling functions as the mono-cycle waveform is evaluated through computer simulations in a Rayleigh fading environment.

  • The binomial sequences are family of orthogonal sequences that can be generated with remarkable simplicity-no multiplications are necessary. This paper introduces a class of non-recursive multidimensional filters for frequency-selective image processing without multiplication operations. The magnitude responses are narrow-band. approximately gaussian-shaped with center frequencies which can be positioned to yield low-pass. band-pass. or high-pass filtering. Algorithms for the efficient implementation of these filters in software or in hardware are described. Also. we show that the binomial QMFs are the maximally flat magnitude square Perfect Reconstruction paraunitary filters with good compression capability and these are shown to be wavelet filters as well. In wavelet transform the original image is decomposed at different scales using a pyramidal algorithm architecture. The decomposition is along the vertical and horizontal direction and maintains constant the number of pixels required to describe the images. An efficient perfect reconstruction binomial QMF-Wavelet signal decomposition structure is proposed. The technique provides a set of filter solutions with very good amplitude responses and band split. The proposed binomial QMF-filter structure is efficient, simple to implement on VLSl. and suitable for multi-resolution signal decomposition and coding applications.

  • This paper provides an approach for representing an optimum vector quantizer by a scalar nonlinear gain-plus-additive noise model. The validity and accuracy of this analytic model is confirmed by comparing the calcuated model quantization errors with actual simulation of the optimum Linde-Buzo-Gray(LBG) vector quantizer. Using this model we frm MSE measure of an M-band filter bank codec in terms of the equivalent scalar quantizatin model and find the optimum FIR filter coefficients for each channel in the M-band structure for a given bit rate, given filter length, and given input signal correlation model. Specific design examples are worked out for 4-tap filters in the two-band paraunitary case. These theoretical results are confirmed by extensive Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This paper provides a heuristic theory for modeling and analysis of vector quantization effects in 2-dimensional subband filter banks. This model is used as the basis for optimal filter bank design. The scalar non-linear gain-plus-additive noise quantization model can be used to represent each vector quantizer in 2-band subband codec. The validity and accuracy and of this analytic model is confirmed by comparing the calculated model quantization errors with actual simulation of the optimum LBG vector quantizer. Numerical design examples for the optimum separable paraunitary filter banks are suggested in this paper.

  • When finite length signal is the input of QMF banks which are composed of the M-band orthogonal wavelet filter, the boundaries of reconstructed signal are not reconstructed perfectly. For boundary signals to be reconstructed perfectly, different type filters or methods are applied to them. In this paper, the design method of boundary filters which can be reconstructed the boundary signal perfectly was proposed, in case the dimension of M-band decomposed signal is the same as that of input signal. The boundary filters were designed using the perfect reconstruction condition of paraunitary matrix. In an application of subband coding of still image, the proposed boundary filters achieve better PSNR about 5% in reconstructed image than reflected method at the same bit rate.

  • This paper provides a rigorous theory for analysis of quantization effects and optimum filter bank design in quantized multidimensional subband filter banks. Even though subband filter design has been a hot topic for last decades, a few results have been reported on the subband filter with a quantizer. Each pdf-optimized quantizer is modeled by a nonlinear gain-plus-additive uncorrelated noise and embedded into the subband structure. Using polyphase decomposition of the analysis/synthesis filter banks, we derive the exact expression for the output mean square quantization error. Based on the minimization of the output mean square error, the technique for optimal filter design methodology is developed. Numerical design examples for optimum nonseparable paraunitary and biorthogonal filter banks are presented with a quincunx subsampling lattice. Through the simulation, $10\~20\;\%$ decreases in MSE have been observed compared with subband filter with no quantizers especially for low bit rate cases.
