One of the most important factors for a proper design of a slender compression member may be the exact determination of the elastic critical load of that member. In the cases of non-prismatic compression member, however, there are times when the exact critical load becomes impossible to determinate if one relies on the neutral equilibrium method or energy principle. Here in this paper, the approximate critical loads of symmetrically or non-symmetrically tapered members are computed by finite element method. The two parameters considered in this numerical analysis are the taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameters, m. The computed results for each sectional property parameter, m are presented in an algebraic equation which agrees with those by F.E.M The algebraic equation can be easily used by structural engineers, who are engaged in structural analysis and design of non-prismatic compression member.

A numerical analysis was perfomed to predict flow curves and dynamic recrystallization behaviors of Al-5%Mg alloy on the basis of results of hot compression tests. The hot compression tests were carried out in the ranges of 350-50$0^{\circ}C$ and 5$\times${{{{ {10 }^{-3 } }}}}~3$\times${{{{ {10 }^{0 } }}}}/sec to obtain the Zener-Hollmon parameter. In the modelling equation the effects os strain hardening and dynamic recrystallization were taken into consideration. A model for predicting the evolution of microstructure in Al-5%Mg alloy during thermomechanical processing was developed in terms of dynamic recrystallization phenomena, The microstructure model was combined with finite element modeling(FEM) to predict microstructure development Model predictions showed good agreement with microstructures obtained in compression tests.

Unstiffened plates are integral part of all kinds of structures such as ship and offshore oil platforms. Openings are unavoidable and absolutely reduce the ultimate strength of structures. In this study, the finite element analysis package, ABAQUS, is used to analyze the behavior of unstiffened plate with rectangular opening. The rectangular opening form is divided into two cases. In case1, opening depth is constant, but opening width is varied. Meanwhile, in case2 opening width is fixed and opening depth is varied. Besides, for the two different form opening, the effect of plate slenderness parameter (${\beta}$), opening area ratio (AR) and opening position ratio (PR) on the ultimate strength of plate with opening under axial compression are presented. It has been found that the ultimate strength of plate ofcase1is much more sensitive to the plate slenderness parameter (${\beta}$) and opening area ratio (AR) than that of case2. However, for case1, opening position (PR) almost has no effect on the ultimate strength, whereas, regardingcase2, the influence of opening position (PR) depends on the plate slenderness parameter (${\beta}$). Based on nonlinear regression analysis, three design formulae are not only developed but also approved reasonably for the practical engineering design.

This paper presents an adaptive data compression algorithm for video data. The coling complexity due to the high correlation in the given data sequence is alleviated by coding the difference data, sequence rather than the data sequence itself. The adaptation to the nonstationary statistics of the data is confined within a code set, which consists of two constant length cades and six modified Shannon.Fano codes. lt is assumed that the probability distributions of tile difference data sequence and of the data entropy are Laplacian and Gaussion, respectively. The adaptive coding performance is compared for two code selection criteria: entropy and $P_r$[difference value=0]=$P_0$. It is shown that data compression ratio 2 : 1 is achievable with the adaptive coding. The gain by the adaptive coding over the fixed coding is shown to be about 10% in compression ratio and 15% in code efficiency. In addition, $P_0$ is found to he not only a convenient criterion for code selection, but also such efficient a parameter as to perform almost like entropy.
The application of stabilization method has increased because of short construction periods, no environmental problems with dumped and replaced soil, assurance of required strength and economical effect with mid to small size construction. The unconfined and triaxial(UU-condition) compression tests were executed with each mixing sample for the study of the improvement effects and the effect of design-parameters by the stabilization methods. Three typical stabilizers, which are representative in Korea, were applied in this study, and three common soils(very soft clay, general weathered soil, common clay), which are common in Korea, were used in this study. In this study, the effect of engineering factors(soils, stabilizers and water contents, etc.) which are important parameters for the improvement effects of mixed ground by stabilizers, was analyzed. As results, the tendencies of design-parameters(unconfined compression strength, deformation modulus and strength parameter) are presented and the criteria of the application of stabilization methods are suggested.

In this study, the experimental methods are compared for obtaining the parameters of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model. The parameters used for numerical simulation are very important in making an accurate estimation of numerical simulation. So, the testing method of obtaining the parameters is also very important. We compared the difference of conventional method, compression method and tensile method of AISI-4340 steel at various strain rate by using MTS, SHPB and SHTB. Taylor impact test and M&S were carried out to compare differences among these three types of JC constitutive parameter.

The family of unidirectional continuous fiber reinforced polymeric composites are currently used in automotive bumper beams and load floors. The material properties and mechanical characteristics of the compression molded parts are determined by the curing behavior, fiber orientation and formation of knit lines, which are in turn determined by the mold filling parameters. In this paper, a new model is presented which can be used to predict the 3-dimensional flow under consideration of the slip of mold-composites and anisotropic viscosity of composites during compression molding of unidirectional fiber reinforced thermoplastics for isothermal state. The composites is treated as an incompressible Newtonian fluid. The effects of longitudinal/transverse viscosity ratio A and slip parameter $\alpha$ on the buldging phenomenon and mold filling patterns are also discussed.
This study aimed to find the optimum instrumental test conditions for the Texture Profile Analysis (TPA) of cooked rice in order to predict the sensory texture attributes (hardness, adhesiveness, chewiness). Sensory evaluation was performed for three kinds of instant cooked rice with university students in their twenties and the results of the sensory evaluation were compared to instrumental TPA patterns. Using partial least squares regression, the instrumental TPA results at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/sec and a compression ratio of 70% proved to be an excellent predictor of the sensory attributes of hardness ($R^2=0.99$) and chewiness ($R^2=0.99$). The results at a cross-head speed of 0.5 mm/sec and compression ratio of 30% provided an excellent model for the prediction of sensory adhesiveness ($R^2=0.83$). In this experimental range, sensory hardness and chewiness showed a high correlation with instrumental TPA parameters (hardness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, springiness, chewiness) with a high cross-head speed and compression ratio, while sensory adhesiveness showed a high correlation with the TPA parameters with a low cross-head speed and compression ratio.

Several yield criteria for porous materials are compared with each other, defining the apparent yield stress as the yield stress of the porous material in simple compression. It was found that the plastic Poisson's ratio is the parameter needed to define the yield criterion, rather than the relative density. The plastic Poisson's ratio is regarded as a material characteristic that is obtained from a simple compression test. A new form of yield criterion was suggested, and it was applied to hydrostatic compression as well as uniaxial strain compression of sintered Al-2024 powder. The crossover point in the mean stress vs volume change curves of the processes was predicted. It is presented that the flow stress of the fully densed material can be obtained from that of the porous material using relations obtained from the yield criterion.
High temperature flow behaviors of AISI 4340 steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests under the temperature range from 850 to $1100^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate from 0.01 to $10s^{-1}$. The flow stress decreased with increasing compression temperature and decreasing strain rate. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrheniustyped equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was used to simulate the hot deformation behavior of AISI 4340 steel. The modification of the Zener-Hollomon parameter and lnA parameter resulted in the improvement of the calculation accuracy of the proposed constitutive model compared with the experimental flow curves. In addition, the process map of AISI 4340 steel was proposed. The instable process condition for hot deformation was predicted and its reliability was verified with the experimental observation.
