  • This paper considered temperature-sensitive characteristics on the basis of curie tempeature and quenching method in the process of manufacturing Mn-Cu-Zn Fersite. The results are as follow. Curie tempeature drops according as the content of CuO and ZnO increases. It also decreases according as sintering temperature increases when the content of ZnO in fixed. Curie temperature drops more in quenching than in slow cooling and activation energy diminishes were too. On the basis of curie tempeature, activation energy is greater in paramagnetic region than in ferrimagnetic region. As its voltage-crrent characteristics is similar to that semiconductors, the temperature-sensitive ferrite is expeated to be appied in the area of power electronics.

  • Oxygen-plasma effects of single crystal and thin film samples of $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3-\delta}$ have been studied. Our resistivity measurements indicate that oxygen plasma treatment gives rise to oxygen diffusion into bulk regions, which results in a decrease of $Mn^{3+}$ concentration in oxygen nonstoichiometric $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3-\delta}$ and in the activation energies of Holstein's small polarons in the paramagnetic region.

  • Employing the LMTO band method, we have studied electronic and magnetic properties of Fe/Si/Fe trilayer in which the z-direction is chosen to be (111) direction of FeSi with B2 phase, We have also determined electronic structure of bulk FeSi, as a reference material. The ground state of FeSi is paramagnetic insulator with a band gap of 0.05 eV. Band structures of Fe/Si/Fe with varying the thickness of the spacer layer reveal that the spacer layer is metallic, and the states along the growth direction do not disperse much reflecting a two-dimensional nature. Magnetic moment of Fe atom in the interfacial layer of Fe/Si/Fe is reduced a lot as compared to the bulk value, suggesting a strong hybridization between Fe and Si states. The geometry of the Fermi surface indicates that the magnetic coupling period of ~8ML (monolayers) in Fe/Si/Fe is explained with a short Fermi wave vector of bcc Si.

  • Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used to detect irradiated meat containing bones (chicken, pork and beef), to investigate the effect of irradiation dose on the ESR signal intensity and to identify the stability of radicals under 9 weeks of storage. Chicken, pork and beef were irradiated with doses 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 kGy at room temperature using a Co-60 irradiator. Bones were pieced and dried, which were placed in a quartz tube within an Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer resonator cavity. The irradiated bone presented an asymmetric absorption in shape, different from that of a non-irradiated one. The signal intensity of smaller animals are lower than larger species. Variation was observed between samples of the same species depending on the calcification status of the bone. Moreover different irradiation doses produced different signal areas that make possible to estimate the absorbed dose of treated meat. The ESR signal stability after irradiation was stable in even after a 9 week storage at room temperature.

  • The GMR ($d_Cu$) oscillatory behaviour as well as the widths of first and the second antiferromagnetically coupled ranges of the Permalloy ($Py=Ni_{83}Fe_{17}$)/Cu multilayers have been found to be strongly affected not only by the presence of the superparamagnetic/paramagnetic entitles located at the Py/Cu interfaces but mainly by the existence of the magnetic bridges between Py layers. The effectiveness of the magnetic bridges has been found to be temperature dependent, leading to the temperature dependence of the remnant to saturation magnetization ratio ($M_R/M_S$). We have found that for Py/Cu multilayers with equal Py and Cu layer thicknesses a high field sensitivity of the GMR effect (0.4%/Oe) and negligible hysteresis can be achieved when the number of Py layers decreases from 100 to 6. Sensitivity can be further improved by increasing the Py layers thickness, but the hysterstic effect becomes more pronounced then.

  • We report the salient features of the magnetic properties of amorphous TM70Cr5Si10B15(TM=Fe, Co, Ni) alloys. The temperature dependence of magnetization for amorphous ribbons were measured by a SQUID and a VSM from 5 K to 700 K under an external field of 10 kOe. Except TM70Cr5Si10B15 that shows a paramagnetic behaviour, both Fe and Co based amorphous alloys show a typical ferromagnetic thermo-magnetization curves. For these two ferromagnetic alloys, the saturation magnetization in the temperature range from 5 K to about 0.4 Tc can be descrived by the Bloch relation, Ms (T)=Ms(0) [1-BT3/2-CT5/2]. The spin wave stiffness constants and the range of exchange interaction were analyzed from the magnetization behaviour. The variation of the magnetic properties are discussed and compared with the composition of the alloys.

  • High gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) is the most commonly used magnetic cell separation technique in biomedical science. However, parameters determining target cell capture efficiencies in HGMS are still not well understood. This limitation leads to loss of information and resources. The present study develops a bead-capture theory to predict capture efficiencies in HGMS. The theory is tested with CD3- and CD14-positive cells in combination with paramagnetic beads of different sizes and a generic immunomagnetic separation system. Data depict a linear relationship between normalized capture efficiency and the bead concentration. In addition, it is shown that key biological functions of target cells are not affected for all bead sizes and concentrations used. In summary, linear bead-capture theory predicts capture efficiency ($E_t$) in a highly significant manner.

  • Magnetic properties of highly zinc-substituted manganese ferrites are discussed on the basis of cation distribution. High throughput neutron powder diffractometry indicates that the prepared samples possess a nearly normal spinel structure, where the substitution of nonmagnetic zinc ions mainly causes the dilution of magnetic ions in the A-sublattice and consequently affects bond-randomness in the B-sublattice. On the other hand, the estimated occupancy of manganese ions in the B site indicates that random anisotropy effects due to local Jahn-Teller distortions gradually weaken with the substitution. Bulk magnetometry indicates that the substitution smears the transition from a paramagnetic phase to a soft-magnetic phase. Furthermore, at lower temperatures, such a soft-magnetic phase is destabilized and a magnetic glassy state appears. These features of the magnetic properties of dilute spinel ferrites are discussed from the viewpoint of the above-mentioned various types of disorders.

  • High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact procedure. Though the induction heating has an advantage in terms of its rapid-heating capacity on the mold surface, it still has a restriction on mold temperature control due to geometric restriction of an induction coil according to the mold shape. It has been recently applied to the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. For localized induction heating, an injection mold composed of ferromagnetic material and paramagnetic material is used. The electromagnetic induction concentrates on the ferromagnetic material, from which we can selectively heat for the local mold elements. The present study proposed a localized induction heating method by means of selective use of mold material. The feasibility of the proposed heating method is investigated through the comparison of experimental observations according to the mold material.
