An Efficient String Matching Algorithm Using Bidirectional and Parallel Processing Structure for Intrusion Detection System

  • Rapid growth of internet applications has increased the importance of intrusion detection system (IDS) performance. String matching is the most computation-consuming task in IDS. In this paper, a new algorithm for multiple string matching is proposed. This proposed algorithm is based on the canonical Aho-Corasick algorithm and it utilizes a bidirectional and parallel processing structure to accelerate the matching speed. The proposed string matching algorithm was implemented and patched into Snort for experimental evaluation. Comparing with the canonical Aho-Corasick algorithm, the proposed algorithm has gained much improvement on the matching speed, especially in detecting multiple keywords within a long input text string.

CUDA based parallel design of a shot change detection algorithm using frame segmentation and object movement

  • This paper proposes the parallel design of a shot change detection algorithm using frame segmentation and moving blocks. In the proposed approach, the high parallel processing components, such as frame histogram calculation, block histogram calculation, Otsu threshold setting function, frame moving operation, and block histogram comparison, are designed in parallel for NVIDIA GPU. In order to minimize memory access delay time and guarantee fast computation, the output of a GPU kernel becomes the input data of another kernel in a pipeline way using the shared memory of GPU. In addition, the optimal sizes of CUDA processing blocks and threads are estimated through the prior experiments. In the experimental test of the proposed shot change detection algorithm, the detection rate of the GPU based parallel algorithm is the same as that of the CPU based algorithm, but the average of processing time speeds up about 6~8 times.

  • 블록암호알고리즘의 기본 구조인 Feistel 구조는 순차처리 구조이므로 병렬처리가 곤란하다. 그러므로 본 논문은 이러한 순차처리 구조를 변형하여 Feistel 구조가 병렬처리가 가능하도록 하였다. 이를 이용하여 본 논문은 병렬 Feistel 구조를 가지는 DES를 설계하였다. 제안된 병렬 Feistel 구조는 자체의 구조적 문제 때문에 pipeline 방식을 사용할 수 없어 데이터 처리속도와 데이터 보안사이에서 trade-off관계를 가질 수밖에 없었던 DES등과 같은 블록암호알고리즘의 성능을 크게 향상 시킬 수 있었다. 그러므로 Feistel 구조를 적용한 SEED, AES의 Rijndael, Twofish 등에 제안된 방식을 적용할 경우 지금보다 더욱 우월한 보안 기능 및 고속의 처리능력을 발휘하게 될 것이다.

  • In this work, we study the checkpoint/restart problem for message-passing parallel applications running on cloud computing environment. This is a new direction which arises from the trend of enabling the applications to run on the cloud computing environment. The main objective is to propose an efficient checkpoint algorithm for message-passing parallel applications considering communications with external systems. We further implement the novel algorithm by modifying gSOAP and OpenMPI (the open source libraries) which support service calls and checkpoint message-passing parallel programs, especially. The simulation showed that additional costs to the executing and checkpointing application of the algorithm are negligible. Ultimately, the algorithm supports efficiently the checkpoint/restart service for message-passing parallel applications, that send requests to external services.

  • This paper considers a parallel-machine scheduling problem with dedicated and common processing machines. Non-identical setup and processing times are assumed for each machine. A genetic algorithm is proposed to minimize the makespan objective measure. In this paper, a lowerbound and some heuristic algorithms are derived and tested through computational experiments.

  • The sorting algorithms have been developed to take advantage of distributed computers. But the speedup of parallel sorting algorithms decrease rapidly with increased number of processors due to parallel processing overhead such as context switching time and inter-processor communication cost. In this paper, we propose a parallel sorting method which provides linear speedup of an optimal serial algorithm for a system with a large number of processors. This algorithm may even provide superlinear speedup for a practical system. The algorithm takes advantage of an interconnection network properties and its protocol.

  • An efficient parallel algorithm is presented to find a maximum weight independent set of a permutation graph which takes O(log n) time using O($n^2$/ log n) processors on an EREW PRAM, provided the graph has at most O(n) maximal independent sets. The best known parallel algorithm takes O($log^2n$) time and O($n^3/log\;n$) processors on a CREW PRAM.

  • A new distributed/parallel algorithm simulator, DASim(Distributed Algorithm Simulator), is proposed in this paper. The idea is to ease the task of design, analysis and implementation of distributed algorithms. A small high level language has been proposed for the purpose. Through this non-language specific high level language, the users are spared from the tedious details about how to program distributed or parallel algorithms. Further, visualization of these algorithms are pretty helpful to understand behaviors of these algorithms.

  • This paper presents two sequential advanced split and merge algorithms and a parallel image segmentation algorithm based on them. First, the two advanced methods are obtained from the combination of edge detection and classic split and merge to solve the inherent problems of the classical method. Besides, the parallel image segmentation algorithm on mesh-connected MIMD system considers three types in the merge stage to reduce the communication overhead between processors, such as intraprocessor merge, interprocessor with boundary merge, and interprocessor without boundary merge. Finally , we prove that the proposed algorithms achieve the improved performance by implementing them.

데이터 중첩을 통한 페트리네트의 병렬 시뮬레이션 (Parallel Simulation of Bounded Petri Nets using Data Packing Scheme)

  • This paper proposes a parallel simulation algorithm for bounded Petri nets in a single processor, which exploits the SIMD(Single Instruction Multiple Data)-type parallelism. The proposed algorithm is based on a data packing scheme which packs multiple bytes data in a single register, thereby being manipulated simultaneously. The parallelism can reduce simulation time of bounded Petri nets in a single processor environment. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by presenting speed-up of simulation time for two bounded Petri nets.
