  • A new effective parallel decoding method has been developed for context-based adaptive variable length codes. In this paper, several new design ideas have been devised for scalable parallel processing, less area, and less power. First, simplified logical operations instead of memory look-ups are used for fast low power operations. Second the codes are grouped based on their lengths for efficient logical operation. Third, up to M bits of input are simultaneously analyzed. For comparison, we have designed the logical operation based parallel decoder for M=8 and a typical conventional method based decoder. High speed parallel decoding is possible with our method. For similar decoding rates (1.57codes/cycle for M=8), our new approach uses 46% less area than the typical conventional method.

  • Recently, various activ filters such as current type and voltage type have been proposed to suppress harmonics caused by nonlinear load due to the use of semiconductor switching devices. At the early stage, active filters are used only to suppress harmonics. However, it has been proposed that they offer more functions such as voltage regulations, improvements of power factor and 3 phase unbalance. This study presents a combined function of active filter and a UPSs with one power processing stage.

  • In this paper, an effective control scheme of a single phase UPS inverter is proposed to have no steady state error of the output voltage and the fast response for the load request. The cosine wave tranfer function is proposed to control the output voltage. This controller clearly removes errors of magnitude and phase both in the steady state. On the other hand, a current controller is proposed to reduce the transient time of the voltage control and to improve the bad distorted factor of the output voltage waveform by the load fluctuation and the presences of nonlinear parameters in the plant. The current controller is designed parallel to the voltage controller and performs separately from it.

  • The conventional APF(Active Power Filter) system performs only function which is compensated for source harmonic by injecting harmonic compensation current as well as reactive power component by PWM. This paper presents a new APF which provides the combined functions of VC(Voltage Compensator) and conventional APF, because the structure of APF is similar to stand- alone UPS in parallel type. Single-chip microprocessor plays an important role in controlling each function. Simulation obtained from ACSL are shown to verify multi-functions of new APP.

  • This paper discusses the control of generator field using dual IGBT PWM regeneration method to target brushless synchronous generator. If one of PWM bridges happens to fault, it transfers automatically and can be in charge of full load. Also it has an advantage of the operation which UPS connected in parallel with PWM bridge can supply power to excitation system in condition of main power loss. This PWM system supplies field current to generator in one quadrature operation, regenerates field coil energy to main power supplier in four quadrature operation. We designed, manufactured and applied the first trial product at J-power plant.

  • This paper describes performance analysis of ARCP Inverter, which can offer zero voltage switching at nominal voltage stress. The system consists of a voltage-source inverter with sort-switching module. Each main switch is connected in parallel with resonant capacitor and two auxiliary switches are placed in series with a resonant reactor for soft-switching capability. The described ARCP inverter could be effectively applied for active power filter reactive power compensator, and UPS.

  • This study proposes a voltage control scheme in a synchronous reference frame to improve the dynamic characteristics of double-conversion UPSs. UPSs need to control positive and negative sequence voltage, so that positive and negative sequence extractors are generally used to obtain each sequence of the voltage and current. Voltage and current controllers for each sequence are implemented. However, the extractor causes considerable delay, and the delay restricts the control performance, especially for the current controller. To improve the dynamics of the current controller, the proposed scheme adopts a unified current controller without separating positive and negative sequences. By using discrete-time current controller, the control bandwidth can be extended significantly so that negative sequence current can be controlled. To enhance the performance, an additional feed-forward technique for output voltage regulation is proposed. The validity of the proposed controller is verified by experiments.

  • This paper proposed the circulation current control scheme in the single phase inverter system. The load experiment of the power conversion system including the UPS usually uses the passive components such as resistors and inductors. Therefore, the energy consumption is serious problem. In addition, the system is out of order when it is installed in the local area, and the load experiment can not perform adequately after troubleshooting, because there is no the load equipment, and the power capacity is not enough in the local area. The paper does the research on the circulation current control scheme, it does not need the load equipment, and the load current can reuse as the input current of the equipment. Instead of the conventional method the voltage-voltage and voltage-current control scheme introduced the parallel converter concept is newly proposed, and the validity of the proposed control scheme is investigated by both simulation and experimental results.

GPU-based Stereo Matching Algorithm with the Strategy of Population-based Incremental Learning

  • To solve the general problems surrounding the application of genetic algorithms in stereo matching, two measures are proposed. Firstly, the strategy of simplified population-based incremental learning (PBIL) is adopted to reduce the problems with memory consumption and search inefficiency, and a scheme for controlling the distance of neighbors for disparity smoothness is inserted to obtain a wide-area consistency of disparities. In addition, an alternative version of the proposed algorithm, without the use of a probability vector, is also presented for simpler set-ups. Secondly, programmable graphics-hardware (GPU) consists of multiple multi-processors and has a powerful parallelism which can perform operations in parallel at low cost. Therefore, in order to decrease the running time further, a model of the proposed algorithm, which can be run on programmable graphics-hardware (GPU), is presented for the first time. The algorithms are implemented on the CPU as well as on the GPU and are evaluated by experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm offers better performance than traditional BMA methods with a deliberate relaxation and its modified version in terms of both running speed and stability. The comparison of computation times for the algorithm both on the GPU and the CPU shows that the former has more speed-up than the latter, the bigger the image size is.

A Simple Stereo Matching Algorithm using PBIL and its Alternative (PBIL을 이용한 소형 스테레오 정합 및 대안 알고리즘)

  • A simple stereo matching algorithm using population-based incremental learning(PBIL) is proposed in this paper to decrease the general problem of genetic algorithms, such as memory consumption and inefficiency of search. PBIL is a variation of genetic algorithms using stochastic search and competitive teaming based on a probability vector. The structure of PBIL is simpler than that of other genetic algorithm families, such as serial and parallel ones, due to the use of a probability vector. The PBIL strategy is simplified and adapted for stereo matching circumstances. Thus, gene pool, chromosome crossover, and gene mutation we removed, while the evolution rule, that fitter chromosomes should have higher survival probabilities, is preserved. As a result, memory space is decreased, matching rules are simplified and computation cost is reduced. In addition, a scheme controlling the distance of neighbors for disparity smoothness is inserted to obtain a wide-area consistency of disparities, like a result of coarse-to-fine matchers. Because of this scheme, the proposed algorithm can produce a stable disparity map with a small fixed-size window. Finally, an alterative version of the proposed algorithm without using probability vector is also presented for simpler set-ups.
