  • A case of fine needle aspiration cytology of an osteoclastic giant cell tumor of pancreas, which is an uncommon variant of ductal adenocarcinoma, is described. Aspirated tumor cells were characterized by three populations: (1) bland osteoclast like giant cells with multiple small, round nuclei with distinct nucleoli, and abundant cytoplasm, (2) Individually scattered or loosely clustered medium sized mononuclear tumor cells, having fine chromatin, smooth nuclear membrane, often prominent nucleoli, and high N/C ratio, (3) bland or atypical spindle shaped cells. Osteoid like lacy material was also seen on cell block section. The immunohistochemical studies using paraffin embedded cell block section showed positivities for vimentin and lysozyme in both giant and mononuclear turner cells. However, they were negative for cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, S-100 protein, carcinoembryonic antigen, and p53.

  • Aim: To determine utility of the frozen section (FS) in the operative management of endometrial pre-malignant lesions. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent abdominal hysterectomy with preoperative diagnosis of complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia (CAEH) and simple endometrial hyperplasia (SEH) between May 2007 and December 2013. Frozen and paraffin section (PS) results were compared. Sensitivity, specificity, the positive predictive value (PPV), the negative predictive value (NPV) and the accuracy in predicting EC on FS were evaluated with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each parameter. The correlation between FS and PS was calculated as an ${\kappa}$ coefficient. Results: Among 143 preoperatively diagnosed CAEH cases, 60 (42%) were malignant and 83 (58%) were benign in PS; and among 60 malignant cases diagnosed in PS, 43 (71%) were "malignant" in FS. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV for FS were 76%, 100%, 100% and 87.5%, respectively. Conclusions: We found that FS is reliable and applicable in the management of endometrial hyperplasias. It is important that the pathologist should be experienced because FS for endometrial pre-malignant lesions has significant inter-observer variability. The other conclusion is that patients with the diagnosis of EH, especially those who are postmenopausal, should undergo surgery where FS investigation is available.

  • The relationship between H. pylori clarithromycin resistance and genetic pattern distribution has been differently explained from different geographic areas. Therefore, we aimed to assess the clarithromycin resistance rate, to evaluate the bacterial genetic pattern, and to search for a possible association between clarithromycin resistance and cagA or vacA genes. This prospective study enrolled 62 consecutive H. pylori infected patients. The infection was established by histology and rapid urease test. Clarithromycin resistance, cagA and vacA status, including s/m subtypes, were assessed on paraffin-embedded antral biopsy specimens by TaqMan real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Primary clarithromycin resistance was detected in 24.1 % of cases. The prevalence of cagA was 69.3%, and a single vacA mosaicism was observed in 95.1 % cases. In detail, the s1m1 was observed in 23 (38.9%) patients, the s1m2 in 22 (37.2%), and the s2m2 in 14 (23.7%), whereas the s2m1 combination was never found. The prevalence of cagA and the vacA alleles distribution did not significantly differ between susceptible and resistant strains. Primary clarithromycin resistance is high in our area. The s1m1 and s1m2 are the most frequent vacA mosaicisms. There is no a relationship between clarithromycin resistance and bacterial genotypic pattern and/or cagA positivity.

  • A Holstein cattle with third pregnancy was found to have clinical emergency findings of anxiety, dyspnea and recumbency at just before parturition. So Cesarean section and observation of internal organs were taken. Macroscopic examination showed enlargement of th lymph nodes and spleen, and ascites. A large tumor mass with solid and white to gray-white and focal hemorrhage, 55$\times$120cm in dimension and weighing 25.5kg was found in pelivc cavity. For conventional light microscopy, tissue samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin solution, and then paraffin embedding, sectining and H-E staining were performed. In microscopic findings, tumor tissue, lymph node and spleeen were composed of mainly lymphoid tumor cells and the number of white blood cells in peripheral blood were increased 10-fold more than in normal. We concluded this tumor was bovine lymphoma.

  • One of the effective means to transfer the heat into and from the energy storage medium is thermosyphon. In this study, a two-phase closed thermosyphon with circular fins was used to extract the thermal energy stored in paraffin wax (Sunoco p-116). Heat transfer characteristics along the heat flow path were investigated as well as the overall performance. Some of the important results are as follows: (1) The temperature distribution of the wax in the radial direction was always maintained fairly uniformly; (2) Compared with bare thermosyphon, the heat transfer rate was vastly improved in the early stage of the experiment; and (3) Heat transfer coefficient between the wax and evaporating section of thermosyphon remained nearly constant during the experiment.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance of a latent heat storage system using paraffin wax as the phase change material. A thermosyphon was employed to transfer heat from the hot ethylene glycol flowing across the evaporator section of the thermosyphon into the wax. In order to increase the effective thermal conductivity of wax, layers of copper wire mesh were immersed in the wax. Experiments were run for volume ratios of 2%, 3%, and 4%, varying mass flow rate of ethylene glycol in each case. Some of the important results are as follows : (1) The wire mesh enhanced the conductive hea transfer and thus, helped even out the temperature distribution in the wax : (2) The increase of the number of layers of wire mesh increased the conduction. However, it also resulted in increasing the resistance to the convective motion of liquefied wax : and (3) There is an optimal number of layers of wire mesh, maximizing the performance of the storage system, which occurred at a volume ratio of $3{\sim}4%$ in the present study.
