The present study was performed to identify the possibility of the disused paper-sludge to substitute an substrate for nursery plants. Tosilee substrate as control, paper-sludge and tosilee substrate (1:1, v:v), and paper sludge substate were used in this experiment. After harvesting tomato seedlings, there were no significant differences in growth parameters such as plant height, root length, and fresh and dry weight grown for tosilee substrate, and paper-sludge and tosilee mixture substrate. However, the seedlings grown for paper-sludge substrate alone were extremely depressed. These growth pattern was followed by cucumber seedlings. As the result of this experiment, we suggest that it must need to stabilize the pH and EC, and Zn concentration in paper-sludge for increasing its material for substrate.

Paper sludges collected from three different paper mills were physico-chemically analyzed in order to use them as raw materials for making bed soils and seedling pots. The sludge from a fine paper mill contained lots of inorganic pigment particles used for coating, as those from a newsprint mill and a tissue mill had not. It was clearly through XRD analysis confirmed that all sludges included calcium carbonate. The paper sludge from the tissue mill contained the greatest amount of particles, which would contribute to water absorption and nutrient storage. The sludge from the fine paper mill had the highest density due to many inorganic elements. While the ash content and the total nitrogen content were the highest in the sludge from the fine paper mill, the C/N ratio was the lowest in the fine paper mill sludge. All sludges seemed to have insufficient contents of potassium. The sludges from the newsprint mill and the tissue mill showed more silicon contents than that from the fine paper mill. It was concluded that the sludge from the fine paper mill would be able to be the most efficient raw materials for making bed soils and seedling pots and the other two sludges would be more efficient for intensive culture for crops such as rice and grain with additional supplement of nitrogen and other nutrients.

It is important to utilize the citrus sludge in terms of the reuse of waste materials in the manufacture of corrugated medium. Especially, the mandarin industry occupies the first place in Jeju province. In this paper, the application of citrus sludge mixed with KOCC recycled fibers into the manufacture of corrugated medium was studied. The citrus sludge was acidic in pH value. Also, the constituents of citrus sludge contain some short fibers, fines, and mucus which contain flavonoids, pectins and so on. In papermaking application, these components cause some troubles like foams, bad smell, fouling on the paper machine, and bad drainage and web breaks of wet web. The strength properties of handsheets prepared from KOCC and citrus sludge was decreased, compare to handsheets made of only KOCC. To compensate the problems on strength properties, some kinds of additives were tried to apply into papermaking wet-end system in laboratory scale. As a result, mixing conditions of alum, starch and anionic additives showed the best options in the recovery of strength properties and formations of corrugated medium.

In order to use organic resource like a compost 44 samples of paper mill sludge were collected from each paper manufacturer. Some metal and PCBs(polychlorinated biphenyls) contents in/on sludge were investigated and metal contents of soil treated with kraft and paper board sludge were checked in contrast io the non-treated soil. The staple results were the same as followings. 1. Average contents of Pb in sludge ranged 14.5-25.7 ppm, and Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Zn were similar concentration to unpolluted soil. Also, Cr and Hg were not detected from any sludge sample. 2. PCBs contents in sludge of kraft, paper board and news print paper were determined. Less than 10 ppb of $PCB_s$ contents were detected from kraft and paper board sludges, but a little more was found in sludge of news print paper. 3. Some metal contents in sludge treated soil were much similar to non-treated soil and the concentration also were ranged under the average of unpolluted natural soil. 4. From these results paper mill sludge seemed to be no harmful effects to soil.

This research is a basic researching process for producing solid fuel that mixing paper sludge and Heat Transfer Medium Oil. Under the presence of Heat Transfer Medium Oil, paper sludge is heated and dried with home appliance microwave for comparing drying efficiency and energy efficiency of different types of drying method. As a result, Heat Transfer Medium Oil and paper mixing case of drying method, OMD, is the most efficient way to shorten the time for evaporating moisture in the paper sludge. In addition, heat transfer effect and density is increased with adding Heat Transfer Medium Oil by microwave. Future more, OMD's energy cost for evaporating whole moisture is 78% cheaper than MD. Also, OMD process shows the best energy efficiency with comparing other process. Evaporation rate of paper sludge evaporation process with microwave is 11.66% increased by adding Heat Transfer Medium Oil 150g. Preheating Heat Transfer Medium Oil or improving different ways injecting Heat Transfer Medium Oil is a good way to increase a rate of initiative moisture evaporation process.
This study was intended to use an incinerated paper mill sludge ash as cement alternatives in order to derive a method of utilizing the incinerated paper mill sludge ash of low utilization rate in large quantities. Also, the utilization possibility of incinerated paper mill sludge ash as the cement alternative was examined by mixing a polypropylene fiber and cellulose fiber and by considering its control effect for shrinkage cracks caused by an increase of absorption rate and hydration heat, as a weakness shown at the alternation of incinerated paper mill sludge ash.

When the clitellate tiger worms(Eisenia fetida) were fed with paper mill sludge, sewage sludge of agricultural-urban area and sewage sludge of agricultural area, number of cocoons produced by individual clitellate earthworm for 104 days were 11.8, 8.6 and 3.5, respectively. However, clitellate earthworms that had been fed with sewage sludge of agricultural-urban area for 52 days or fed with sewage sludge of agricultural area for 95 days could not produce cocoons, whereas the earthworms that were fed with paper mill sludge kept producing cocoons through the investigating period. The hatchability of cocoons produced by the clitellate tiger worms(Eisenia fetida) fed with sewage sludge of agricultural-urban region, sewage sludge of agricultural region and paper mill sludge were 42.8%, 38.3% and 39.2%, respectively. And hatching periods of cocoons were 33.8~36.0 days, which were not affected by the kinds of sludges. However, the cocoons produced by clitellate earthworms which had been fed with sewage sludge for about 1.5 months could not hatch at all. Death rates of second generation hatched from cocoons produced by tiger worms(Eisenia fetida) which had been fed with the sewage sludge from agricultural-urban region and the sewage sludge from agricultural region reached to 100% and 90% at 60 days after hatching, respectively, whereas death rate of second generation fed with paper mill sludge reached to 16%.

Recently, solar energy generation is one of the fastest growing industries for eco-friendly energy. Every year, solar energy generation industry grows to 42% on average. However, polysilicon sludge is generated from processing of polysilicon but, there is nothing to handle that. Therefore, we need research to recycle polysilicon sludge. Also, improved fire resistance efficiency of wall is required according to reinforced fire safety standards due to many cases of big fires in our country. This study focuses on density and strength properties according to the addition ratio of paper Ash for the lightweight composite panel core with polysilicon sludge. As a result of the test, adding paper ash 9% has the best density and strength properties.

This research was performed to evaluate heavy metal leaching characteristics of the sludge from paper mill process with sintering temperature. Heavy metal leaching of the sludge was characterized with Korean Leaching Test and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure. The test sludge was composed of 70.72% of moisture, 9.5% of volatile solids and 9.76% of fixed solids. As a result of XRF analysis, Fe was the highest inorganic element in approximately 83%, which implies the recycling possibility of the sludge in reuse of Fenton chemicals and artificial lightweight aggregate. Leaching of heavy metals from sintered sludge was lower than the dry ones. However, there was no significant difference in leaching characteristics between the sludges sintered at $350^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$. Zn and Fe were leached more greatly in TCLP and KLT methods respectively.
This study was carried out to evaluate effect of sludge characteristics (pH, SVI, anaerobic storage, wet density and growth phase) on the sedimentation of bulking sludge of paper manufacturing plant. The results showed that mix hulking sludge with sewage sludge (10-60%) caused the decrease of SVI, the settled sludge concentration was increased. Increase of anaerobic storage time (0 to 8 day) was increased SVI, sedimentation performance was deteriorated. The sedimentation was improved by addition of loess (0.2-5.0 g/L), because wet density of sludge was increased and SVI was decreased. At an exponential phase, the ratio of sedimented/growthed sludge concentration was decreased, the ratio was increased after stationary phase.
